Electromyographic biofeedback or neuromuscular electrical stimulation added to isometric quadriceps exercise does not improve pain and functional outcomes in knee osteoarthritis: a randomized controlled trial.

Quadriceps muscle weakness is a common clinical feature in individuals with knee osteoarthritis (KOA) and contributes to pain, functional limitations, and reduced quality of life. While quadriceps strengthening exercises are well-established, the additional benefits of electromyographic biofeedback (EMG-BFB) and neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) remain inconclusive. This single-blind randomized controlled trial investigated whether EMG-BFB or NMES provides added benefits when combined with isometric quadriceps strengthening exercises in patients with mild-to-moderate KOA. Effects of improved visual appearance on clinical outcomes after total knee arthroplasty: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Despite advancements in total knee arthroplasty (TKA), some patients remain dissatisfied postoperatively, potentially due to subjective perceptions of knee appearance. This study investigated whether visual feedback on improved knee alignment and appearance after TKA influences pain perception and patient-reported outcomes. METHODS: In this prospective, double-blind, randomized controlled trial, 60 patients undergoing primary TKA were randomized into intervention or control groups (n = 30 each). Pre- and postoperative radiographs, photographs, and gait videos were collected. Patie

Hippocampal volume trajectory and its relation to clinical course during and following ECT-treatment in patients with depression: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Neuroimaging studies in humans and translational animal models consistently demonstrate ECT-induced hippocampal volume increases. However, evidence linking hippocampal volume changes to clinical improvement in depression has been inconsistent. This systematic review with meta-analysis extends previous work to investigate whether hippocampal volume changes following the completion of an ECT-index series are associated with the clinical course of depression. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis following PRISMA guidelines. Studies were eligible if they assesse

Compassion-focused group therapy improves depression, emotional eating, self-criticism and shame in people living with severe obesity: A single-centre, examiner-blind randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Severe obesity (defined as a BMI ≥ 40 kg m-2) is often accompanied by significant mental health co-morbidities such as eating disorders and depressive disorder and people living with severe obesity often experience feelings of shame, self-criticism and feelings of inferiority in relation to others. Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) was specifically designed for people with high levels of shame and self-criticism and aims to promote self-compassion which is regarded as an adaptive emotional regulation strategy. AIMS: To explore the effect on psychological outcomes of a 10-session (w

The Impact of BWM-T Versus Brief Mindfulness Induction on Stress, Anxiety and Self-Efficacy in University Students: Immediate and Short-Term Outcomes of RCT on Psychological Well-Being and Autonomic Balance.

BACKGROUND: University students face increasing levels of stress, anxiety, and self-efficacy, which may disrupt autonomic balance. While many mind-body interventions require sustained practice, growing evidence suggests that even a single session can yield immediate benefits. This randomized controlled trial compared the immediate and short-term effects of the brain wave modulation technique (BWM-T) and a brief mindfulness induction on psychological and physiological outcomes in university students. METHODS: 68 students were randomly assigned to either BWM-T or a brief mindfulness induction.

The mind-eat program leads to greater improvements in mindful, emotional, and external eating compared to intuitive eating-oriented education in adults with overweight or obesity: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Mindful eating interventions target behavioral and emotional processes involved in eating, but most structured programs have been evaluated in English-speaking settings and often compared with passive controls. This randomized controlled trial assessed the effectiveness of the Mind-Eat program, a structured mindfulness-based intervention, versus treatment as usual consisting of a therapeutic patient education (TPE) program grounded in intuitive eating principles, in adults with overweight or obesity. METHODS: In this single-center trial, 66 adults with overweight or obesity were r

Physiological adaptation during heart rate variability biofeedback in young adults: A survival analysis in high-stress academic environments.

Medical education is a high-demand environment where stress may disrupt autonomic and HPA-axis regulation. We examined symptom trajectories and adaptation during heart rate variability biofeedback (HRV-BF) in an academic setting. Forty-seven students were followed for ~3 months. The intervention group completed HRV-BF twice weekly (~30 min/session). Psychological outcomes (PSS, SAS, BAI, BDI) were assessed at baseline and follow-up, with clinically meaningful improvement defined as a ≥ 20% reduction. HRV/coherence indices were analyzed with mixed-effects models, and cortisol and secretory IgA

Early sleep after action observation and motor imagery improved manual dexterity in patients after surgery for metacarpal and phalangeal fractures.

Immobilization after surgical fixation for metacarpal and phalangeal fractures induces a decay in manual dexterity. Action Observation and Motor Imagery (AOMI) mitigate motor performance decline during hand immobilization, and early sleep after such approaches has been reported to further enhance the consolidation of motor learning in healthy subjects. Here, we investigated the effects of early sleep after AOMI training sessions in subjects with immobilization after surgical fixation for metacarpal and phalangeal fractures. Fifty-four subjects with immobilization of fourth and fifth fingers af
