[Comparison between Taylor spatial frame and Ilizarov circular frame in treatment of large-segment tibial bone defect].

OBJECTIVE: To compare the effectiveness of bone transport using the Taylor spatial frame (TSF) versus the Ilizarov circular frame (ICF) in the treatment of long-segment tibial bone defects. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on the clinical data of 44 patients with large-segment tibial bone defects who met the selection criteria and received surgical treatment between January 2011 and December 2024. The patients were divided into the TSF group (25 cases) and the ICF group (19 cases) according to different external fixation methods. There was no significant difference in baseline

Cytological Findings and Diagnostic Pitfalls of a Rare Tumor Arising From a Rare Site: "The Story of Chondromyxoid Fibroma of Great Toe".

Chondromyxoid fibroma (CMF) is a rare, benign cartilaginous tumor composed of myxoid and fibrous components, accounting for approximately 1% of all bone tumors. It typically arises in the metaphysis of long bones, with epiphyseal involvement of the short tubular bones of the hand and foot being uncommon. We report the case of a 14-year-old girl who presented with pain and a gradually progressive swelling of the left great toe, occurring after a fracture sustained 2.5 years earlier. Radiological findings were suggestive of an aneurysmal bone cyst or giant cell tumor. Fine-needle aspiration cyto

Supernumerary Tusks in African Savanna Elephants (Loxodonta africana): A Case Series and Consideration of Developmental Mechanisms.

Supernumerary teeth are well recognised in humans and domestic animals but are rarely reported in elephants. This case series describes four African savanna elephants (Loxodonta africana) with multiple tusk structures occupying a single alveolus. A 7-year-old bull presented with a deformed left tusk and behavioural changes. Clinical examination revealed two coronal openings, followed by eruption of three accessory tusks. Conservative intracavitary treatment and selective surgical removal of the accessory tusks preserved the primary tusk, which maintained normal eruption and function at 36-mont

Avulsion Fracture of the Lesser Trochanter in a Young Adolescent.

Avulsion fracture of the lesser trochanter occurs when the iliopsoas tendon detaches from its bony insertion and is more commonly associated with sports-related injuries. We report the case of a 14-year-old male who developed acute right groin pain and functional impairment after a triple jump. Examination revealed pain during right hip extension. Anteroposterior pelvic radiography demonstrated an avulsion fracture of the right lesser trochanter, which was confirmed by CT. The patient was treated conservatively with rest and reduced weight-bearing on the affected limb. His pain resolved within

Endoscopic Decompression for Lateral Recess Stenosis Due to Vertebral Compression Fracture: A Case Report.

STUDY DESIGN: Case presentation. OBJECTIVE: The interlaminar endoscopic lateral recess decompression (IE-LRD) represents a novel surgical alternative to consider in carefully selected cases, particularly when patients do not respond to conservative treatment. BACKGROUND: Lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) constitutes one of the most prevalent spinal conditions in the elderly population around the world. A myriad of causes have been elucidated, and although infrequent, vertebral compression fractures (VCF) may also cause LSS. Conservative treatment might be the first option; however, patients often

A Distinct Posterior Cruciate Ligament Avulsion Fracture Involving the Weight-bearing Lateral Tibial Plateau as a Single Fragment: A Case Report.

Posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) avulsion fractures usually involve the tibial insertion as a discrete fragment. Although combined PCL avulsion and tibial plateau fractures have been described, a continuous fracture fragment involving both the PCL insertion and the weight-bearing lateral tibial plateau is rarely reported and may require different treatment considerations. We report a woman, aged 38 years, with a neglected PCL avulsion fracture involving the weight-bearing region of the lateral tibial plateau as a single, continuous fragment. This morphology created a specific surgical dilemma

Sequential Opposite-pattern Supracondylar Fractures in the Same Elbow of a Child.

Supracondylar humerus fractures in children are most commonly of the extension type, whereas flexion-type injuries are rare. Sequential occurrence of extension- and flexion-type supracondylar fractures in the same elbow is extremely uncommon. We report a child who sustained a Gartland type II extension-type supracondylar fracture at 5 years of age, managed conservatively with above-elbow casting. He recovered fully and resumed normal activities. Ten months later, at age 6 years, he sustained a new fall on the same limb and presented with a Gartland type III flexion-type supracondylar fracture.

Measurement properties of pulmonary function measurement and patient-reported outcome measures in patients with multiple rib fracture without flail segment; validation study alongside the multicenter FixCon trial.

BACKGROUND: The reliability and validity of pulmonary function, pain and health related quality of life (HR-QoL) as outcome measures for patients with rib fractures, remain uncertain. Our objective was to evaluate measurement properties in patients with multiple rib fractures by comparing them with generic HR-QoL instruments (EuroQoL-5D-5L [EQ-5D-5L], Short Form-12 [SF-12]). METHODS: A multicenter RCT in adults (n = 180) was performed. Spirometry was performed at 30 days, 3, 6, and 12 months after trauma. Patients completed five questions on pain, EQ-5D-5L, SF-12, and two anchor questions on

Bridge over Troubled Tendon? A Novel Case of Heterotopic Ossification of Lister's Tubercle Causing Extensor Pollicis Longus Tenosynovitis.

INTRODUCTION: Distal radius fractures are a common injury in adults, and surgical treatment frequently consists of open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) with a volar plate and screws. Uncommonly, heterotopic ossification (HO) may form as a result of inflammation secondary to trauma in the wrist, and once formed, surgical excision is the only effective treatment. CASE REPORT: A healthy 57-year-old male presents with thumb pain and decreased range of motion 2 years postoperatively of a distal radius ORIF with notable dorsal comminution. Physical examination was significant for pain, weakness,

[Post-Fracture Care in the Czech Republic: Adherence to Guidelines and Attitudes Toward Fracture Liaison Services].

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Untreated osteoporosis often leads to subsequent fractures associated with high morbidity and mortality. In the Czech Republic, approximately 15,000 patients are hospitalized annually with femoral neck fractures, with up to 25% mortality within the first year after a hip fracture. Establishing a coordinated post-fracture care program, such as Fracture Liaison Services (FLS), may substantially reduce this burden. In the FLS model, the role of the coordinator is pivotal. This study aimed to assess baseline adherence to national postfracture care guidelines and to evaluate n

A Rare Post-traumatic Tibial Tubercle Avulsion Combined With a Complete Section of the Patellar Tendon in a Young Patient: Insight Into Surgical Management.

Avulsion of the tibial tubercle with patellar tendon section in children is a rare but serious injury. It typically occurs after acute trauma, such as a forceful take-off or sudden jump in a young person nearing skeletal maturity. Diagnosis is made on plain radiographs, and displaced forms require surgical treatment to realign and fix the bone fragment and repair the tendon. We report here the case of a 15-year-old adolescent involved in a road traffic accident with a direct impact to the left knee. Standard radiographs showed a fracture of the tibial tubercle. Intraoperative exploration revea

Sequential bilateral hip fractures after conservative treatment of femoral neck fracture: a case report.

Conservative treatment for valgus-impacted fractures can yield a high union rate; however, determining the ideal indications for this approach remains challenging. Older adults may sustain bilateral hip fractures from low-impact falls, typically presenting a symmetric fracture pattern. Nonetheless, asymmetric bilateral hip fractures, though extremely rare, have been documented. This report describes a case of a 78-year-old woman who presented after a low-impact fall at home. Her medical history included a previous fall 3 months earlier, resulting in a Garden I right femoral neck fracture treat

Adverse outcomes of post-core restorations performed by undergraduate and postgraduate dental students: a retrospective comparison.

BACKGROUND: Clinical training outcomes are essential indicators of the quality and effectiveness of undergraduate and postgraduate dental education. Post-core restorations in endodontically treated teeth represent technically demanding procedures that require adequate clinical judgment and manual skills. However, limited evidence exists regarding how operator education level influences the distribution of adverse clinical outcomes in such procedures within dental education settings. This retrospective study aimed to evaluate and compare adverse outcomes of prefabricated metal post-core restora
