A retrospective study is presented of 19 patients with pleural mesothelioma diagnosed over an 18-year period (1964-1981). Two patients are alive after observation for 12 and 16 months. In 16 fatal cases the post-diagnosis survival time was 1-113 (median 17) months. One patient was lost to follow-up after 6 months. The male: female ratio was 5.3:1. The disease was most commonly detected in persons in their sixties and seventies. Pain and dyspnoea, the most common of the presenting symptoms, occurred in half of the patients. Weight loss and malaise were reported by six patients. Mesothelioma was

Between January 1978 and December 1982 successful sequential chromosome analyses were carried out on bone marrow cells of five patients previously treated for Hodgkin's lymphoma (HL) presenting unexplained cytopenia or pancytopenia during follow-up. All patients had concurrent morphological examination of bone marrow specimens showing signs of dysplasia and/or hypoplasia, without leukaemic infiltrate. Six other patients treated for HL who had normal haematological parameters served as controls. All the patients with unexplained cytopenias had clonal chromosome abnormalities; monosomy for chrom

We report 31 cases of primary malignant tumours of the trachea, treated with radiotherapy at the Tumour Centre, Pitié-Salpêtrière, from June 1968 to January 1982. Three patients received complementary post-operative irradiation: one had an epidermoid carcinoma, operated by incomplete resection and anastomosis, and survived 12 months after irradiation with 60,00 grays in 6 weeks (local recurrence of tumour and mediastinal extension); the other two had cylindromas of the trachea with complete resection and anastomosis: the first remains alive 6 years after an irradiation of 65,00 grays over 6 we

The incidence of testicular infiltrates in 68 boys with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in first remission (1974-81), was prospectively investigated through careful clinical examination and routine bilateral biopsies at 2-3 years of remission. All boys were under 14 years of age and they were treated with protocols D.74 and Pethema 7/78. Seven patients (10.3%) presented an isolated testicular relapse (ITR) during the chemotherapy period. In 13 of the 43 testicular biopsies (31%) leukemic infiltrates were found, and in another two findings were controversial. Three boys, two with previous negative

In an area of high transmission of Schistosoma haematobium and S. mansoni in Central Liberia, populations of five villages and intermediate host snails were surveyed for two years. In three of these villages focal application of molluscicide (niclosamide) in the main transmission sites was combined with mass chemotherapy of a target population representing 76 to 90% of the contamination index. In the two other villages, which served as control, the prevalence indexes remained stable or increased a little during the period of this study. A three dose metrifonate mass treatment was applied in on

This paper reports the results of a retrospective study carried out with special reference to the survival rate in a series of 101 selected cases including patients with complete heart block (CHB) combined or not combined with Adams-Stokes attacks and patients with arrhythmic syncope without ECG evidence of CHB. All these patients were treated in our Department during 1958-68, none being artificially paced. Twenty-seven patients were alive at the end of the follow-up, i,e 6-15 years after admission to this Department on account of syncopal episodes or CHB. The survival rate--higher in females
