Iatrogenic lesions of the hepatocholedochus are among the most serious complications of upper abdominal surgery. They present the surgeon with difficult problems: unsuccessful attempts to reconstruct easily lead to irreparable liver damage and situations which can no longer be controlled surgically. Sixty patients with Parkinson's disease underwent sterotaxic surgery in Edinburgh between 1965 and 1967, and were examined every 2 years for a total follow-up period of 10 years. Although stereotaxic surgery had been extremely effective in treating tremor and rigidity, the other manifestations of Parkinson's disease were noted to progressively affect more patients at each follow-up examination. L-dopa therapy was instituted in 36 patients after 1968. The effect of L-dopa on bradykinesia was remarkable, but the long-term benefit on the other manifestations of Parkinson's disease was negligible.

Four children aged (11.7-13.5 yr) with protracted growth retardation related to Crohn's disease, received a 6-wk period of continuous elemental enteral alimentation with no other form of treatment. Fifteen premenopausal women had by-pass reconstruction performed for aorto-iliac disease. A high prevalence of smoking, oral contraception and hyperlipemia was found. Research in Papua New Guinea and elsewhere in the developing world has indicted the dangers of bottle feeding infants. Following a failure to obtain the voluntary agreement of shopkeepers to restrict sales of infant-feeding bottles and teats, legislation was passed which placed these items on prescription. In order to obtain a prescription certain conditions have to be satisfied. A follow-up survey which was carried out in Port Moresby two years after the introduction of legislation indicated a significant decline in the extent of bottle feeding.

Thirteen cases of urethral diverticulum in females are reported. Symptoms were non-specific. Two cases presented with suppuration in previously undiagnosed diverticula. A young man developed chronic graft-versus-host disease (GvHD) after allogeneic bone marrow transplantation. The close resemblance of his skin changes to those of patients with progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS) prompted an examination for clinical and pathologic involvement of other organ systems. A group of 3975 San Francisco longshoremen in cohorts classified annually by work activity (WA) was followed for fatal heart attack (FHA) over a 22-year period. In 57,632 person-years of follow-up, 410 men died from heart attack. A multi-factor logistic analysis was used to study work energy output adjusted for age, race, systolic blood pressure, smoking, body mass index, glucose intolerance and EKG status as predictors of FHA. In a comparative, prospective, open randomised clinical study, the efficacy and tolerance of cefaclor (3 x 500 mg) and amoxicillin (3 x 750 mg) in the treatment of urinary tract infection (UTI) were investigated and compared. To evaluate the benefits of operative treatment of congenital heart disease in older age groups, a clinical study on patients over 40 years of age with atrial septal defect was carried out.
