BACKGROUND: The routine chest radiography has been legally suppressed because of its low diagnostic profitability in non selected populations. Health surveillance of occupational populations at respiratory risk is entering a transitional period, where new guidelines are needed. Therefore, we determined to study the percentage of pathological findings in the chest radiographies of health examinations for hospital workers and whether it was possible to obtain explicative models allowing to calculate the probability of radiographies alteration.

Twenty-nine healthy persons were Schick tested as part of their occupational health examination. All but three of them had been previously immunised against diphtheria. One unimmunised person had a history of diphtheria. Blood samples were taken before and at varied intervals after the Schick tests in order to determine whether the Schick test antigen was immunogenic. Of the 29 persons tested, 21 were Schick-negative, three were Schick-positive. Four pseudoreactors were Schick-negative, one pseudoreactor was Schick-positive. The occupational health examination can be a challenging and interesting part of family practice. The pre-employment examination is conducted to ensure that the prospective employee has the physical and mental capacity for the job's demands. It is important to know both the state of the employee's health and the actual work environment, best assessed by visiting the work site. Most difficult decisions can be resolved by good communication with the employee and, with the employee's permission, with the employer.
