OBJECTIVE: Despite advances in diagnosis and treatment, approximately 50% of individuals affected by tuberculosis develop post-tuberculosis lung disease (PTLD), leading to functional limitations and reduced quality of life (QoL). Pulmonary rehabilitation programs have demonstrated benefits in patients with PTLD; however, access remains limited, and telerehabilitation may offer a cost-effective solution. This study sought to compare physical capacity and QoL in patients with PTLD following an eight-week telerehabilitation program.
METHODS: This was a randomized controlled trial including 30 pa

Perianal tuberculosis is a rare manifestation of tuberculosis. This report describes a healthy 41-year-old man diagnosed with a perianal abscess that required examination and surgical drainage under general anesthesia. The wound healed poorly over the following months, prompting repeat cultures and tissue sampling. Histological diagnosis revealed necrotizing granulomatous inflammation and acid-fast bacilli, indicating mycobacterial infection. Further investigation revealed pulmonary tuberculosis. The patient received a six-month course of anti-tuberculosis medications and recovered fully. The

INTRODUCTION: In high-burden nations like India, tuberculosis (TB) continues to be a significant global public health concern. HIV infection, diabetes mellitus, and low socioeconomic status are examples of comorbid illnesses that increase susceptibility to tuberculosis (TB), and the introduction of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) has made disease control even more challenging. The time-consuming nature of conventional drug susceptibility testing (DST) emphasizes the critical need for quick biomarkers to forecast treatment outcomes and resistance. Because of their possible impact on h

BACKGROUND: Rifampicin-resistant tuberculosis (RR-TB) remains a major public health concern, particularly in African populations where undernutrition is common. Many participants with RR-TB initiate treatment with a low body mass index (BMI), which has been linked to higher mortality and treatment failure.
METHODS: This retrospective study analysed data from 895 participants diagnosed with rifampicin-resistant tuberculosis (RR-TB) enrolled across five clinical trials conducted between 2009 and 2024 in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. Participants were classified by BMI (normal weight, overweight,

INTRODUCTION: Tuberculosis (TB) and non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are socioeconomically important infectious diseases. Diagnosis is supported by radiological examinations following the evaluation of clinical symptoms. Definitive diagnosis is made microbiologically or histopathologically. TB and NTM infections progress with different radiological findings such as cavitary and nodular infiltrations. In our study, it was aimed to investigate which criteria are stronger radiological determinants of which disease in microbiologically positive TB and NTM cases.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In our st

While anti-tuberculosis drugs (ATDs) are essential for tuberculosis (TB) treatment, they can induce severe hypersensitivity reactions, including drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS) syndrome. Its occurrence presents significant diagnostic and therapeutic challenges, especially in TB patients with type 2 respiratory failure and sepsis. A 23-year-old man with pulmonary TB developed ATD-induced DRESS syndrome complicated by type 2 respiratory failure and sepsis. He developed DRESS syndrome after initiating a standard ATD regimen consisting of rifampicin (R), isoniazid (H)

Lung cancer, pulmonary tuberculosis, and brucellosis are common clinical diseases. They share overlapping clinical manifestations and pulmonary imaging findings, and all may involve multiple organ systems, making differential diagnosis challenging. We reported a rare case of lung cancer, and co-infection with pulmonary tuberculosis and brucellosis. A 57-year-old male was admitted to our hospital, presenting with intermittent fever for 7 months and cough accompanied by shortness of breath for 1 month. He had previously sought medical care at multiple hospitals, where he was diagnosed with bruce

We report two singular cases of sudden death in which the cause was advanced tuberculosis infection. In the first case, a 24-year-old man died suddenly following massive hemoptysis due to erosion of the pulmonary vessels. The second case involved a 29-year-old man who died unexpectedly from asphyxia secondary to hemoptysis caused by fibrocavitatory tuberculosis. Toxicological screening and HIV testing were negative in both cases. Medico-legal autopsy, combined with detailed histological examination, was essential to determine the exact cause of death.

Tuberculosis (TB) is a significant global health challenge, with chest wall involvement representing a rare extrapulmonary manifestation. Tuberculous cold abscess of the chest wall is particularly infrequent. This case describes a 59-year-old female with chronic back pain and a non-tender swelling on the anterolateral chest wall. Advanced imaging revealed enlarged, conglomerate subcarinal lymphadenopathy and a cold abscess associated with osteolytic destruction of the ninth rib, without pulmonary involvement. Microbiological evaluation confirmed the presence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and

Probe-based confocal laser endomicroscopy (pCLE) constitutes a cutting-edge in vivo imaging technology, yet its application within the realm of respiratory medicine, especially of pleural disease, is still in its incipient phase. This single-center, retrospective analysis encompassed patients admitted to our department between August 2023 and January 2024 for the investigation of "pleural effusion of unknown etiology," who subsequently underwent medical thoracoscopy augmented by pCLE examination. The study culminated in a comprehensive analysis of the pCLE imaging attributes of pleural lesions

A one-year-old boy was referred to our respiratory department for further evaluation of obstructing endobronchial lesions. The lesions were detected on chest computed tomography (CT) performed at another hospital after the patient presented with cough and worsening wheezing. Physical examination revealed tachypnea and diminished breath sounds bilaterally without rales. The patient was receiving supplemental oxygen. Notably, his medical history was significant for an admission at 21 days of age for persistent cough, right upper lung atelectasis, and sputum analysis that revealed Bordetella pert

RATIONALE: Ruxolitinib, a Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitor, may increase the risk of tuberculosis infection by suppressing cellular immunity. Tuberculosis associated with ruxolitinib has generally been reported as disseminated or multisystem disease. However, no previous cases of primary bone tuberculosis secondary to ruxolitinib have been reported.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 68-year-old female patient had been taking ruxolitinib for over 2 years for primary thrombocythaemia and developed recurrent high fever without other localizing symptoms.
DIAGNOSES: Imaging studies revealed multiple areas of bone

Granulomatous diseases often present with overlapping clinical and histopathological features, posing a diagnostic challenge, particularly in regions endemic for tuberculosis. We report the case of a 68-year-old diabetic male with a significant smoking history who presented with progressive shortness of breath and cough for almost three weeks' duration and multiple cutaneous nodules, present for six years, that increased in size and number over two months before presentation. Initial evaluation revealed normal chest imaging, negative microbiological tests for tuberculosis, a non-reactive Manto

Female genital tuberculosis is a rare and often asymptomatic condition, which makes its diagnosis challenging. Early recognition of uncommon clinical presentation of tuberculosis is crucial for the better management of it. We report herein a case of genital tuberculosis that initially presented as pyometra and subsequently progressed to miliary tuberculosis. An 86-year-old woman with a history of immunosuppressive therapy for bullous pemphigoid presented with fever and septic shock and was diagnosed with pyelonephritis. Computed tomography (CT) incidentally revealed pyometra, from which Escher
