Syphilitic Hepatitis Presenting As Cholestatic Liver Injury: A Case Report.

Syphilis, caused by the spirochete Treponema pallidum, is a sexually transmitted infection whose incidence has risen worldwide over the past decade and which may involve virtually any organ, including the liver. Syphilitic hepatitis is an uncommon and frequently overlooked manifestation that characteristically produces a cholestatic pattern of liver injury. We report the case of a 61-year-old man with no relevant medical history and self-reported sexual risk factors, admitted with a 15-day history of bilateral leg edema, fatigue, dry cough, odynophagia, weight loss, and conjunctivitis of the r

Implementation of self-collected cervical screening in an under-screened, culturally and linguistically diverse antenatal population: a quality improvement study.

Eliminating cervical cancer requires high screening participation levels. Pregnancy is an opportunity to reach under-screened women, but clinician-collected speculum examination is a barrier to uptake. Patient self-collected cervical screening tests (SC-CST) using a vaginal swab for detection of human papillomavirus (HPV) may offer a solution. The objective of this study was to evaluate the outcomes and implementation of a comprehensive programme embedding SC-CST into antenatal care. This is a prospective quality improvement study in a tertiary hospital servicing a population with one of the lo

Long-term impacts of COVID-19 on systemic inflammation and control of breathing reflexes: an observational cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in over 7 million reported deaths and over 700.4 million reported infections to-date. Many individuals who recover from COVID-19 report prolonged dyspnea, sometimes persisting for months. Furthermore, COVID-19 has been linked to systemic and neuronal inflammation which may have downstream impacts on the neural control of breathing. Therefore, we hypothesized that individuals recovered from COVID-19 may exhibit changes in their ventilatory chemosensitivity to carbon dioxide and hypoxia, and that these changes may be linked to systemic inflammation. Dermatoses in Pregnancy: A Hospital-Based Cross-Sectional Study From Eastern India.

Introduction Numerous skin changes occur in pregnancy, the majority of which are physiological in nature and linked to the hormonal, metabolic, vascular, or immunologic changes. However, some pruritic eruptions cause anxiety during pregnancy and may affect the maternal and fetal outcome. This study aims to evaluate the prevalence, clinical patterns, and association with gravida and trimester of dermatoses among pregnant women attending an antenatal clinic for routine obstetric care. Methods This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted at the Department of Dermatology, Venereology and L

Disease Spectrum of Human Metapneumovirus Infections in Infants and Young Children: Data From a Prospective Multicenter Study in Germany.

BACKGROUND: Human metapneumovirus (hMPV) is a significant respiratory pathogen in infants and young children. Although most infections present as nonsevere cases in outpatient settings, severe courses can lead to hospitalization. Few potential risk factors for hospitalization have already been identified, but studies comparing the clinical presentation of children with hMPV in inpatient versus outpatient settings are lacking. METHODS: This retrospective analysis used data from the Pediatric Airway Pathogen Incidence study, a multicenter surveillance study of lower respiratory tract infections

Preparation and immune efficacy evaluation of inactivated lumpy skin disease virus vaccine.

Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD), historically restricted to Africa, has in recent years exhibited a marked expansion into several Asian and European countries, resulting in substantial economic impacts on the global cattle industry. In August 2019, the first confirmed outbreak of LSD was documented in the Xinjiang region of China. In response to this emerging threat, our study established primary, basic, and working seed banks utilizing the LSDV/MZGD/2020 strain, which was isolated from Meizhou, Guangdong. These seed banks underwent rigorous validation via sterility assays and evaluation of prolifera

Clinical characterization and genotypic identification of border disease virus in sheep breeds in Iran.

BACKGROUND: Border disease (BD), caused by Border Disease Virus (BDV), leads to reproductive losses, congenital defects, and persistently infected (PI) lambs that maintain viral circulation. In Iran, existing reports are limited, confined to one area and breed, and rarely integrate clinical, pathological, virological, and genotypic data. This study investigates BD across Iranian sheep breeds, combining clinical observation, pathology, virus detection, and genotype analysis to clarify its epidemiology and support early recognition, targeted control measures, and improved small ruminant health a

A new 308 A-G substitution in HBG2 in an acyanotic newborn: case report.

BACKGROUND: Neonatal hypoxemia in absence of structural cardiopulmonary anomalies is a diagnostic challenge. Haemoglobin variants involving the gamma-globin gene are recognized causes of transient desaturation in the newborn period. We report a novel HBG2 mutation identified in a clinically stable, non-cyanotic neonate born to a mother with active SARS-CoV-2 infection, highlighting a previously unreported variant with potential functional consequences on haemoglobin-oxygen affinity. METHODS: A term female newborn was delivered vaginally to a 39-years-old mother with gestational diabetes, thro
