Malaria and filariasis are mosquito-borne diseases caused by protozoal and nematode parasites, respectively. Despite different vectors, they can occur together under suitable conditions in endemic regions. In our case, microfilariae were incidentally discovered during a blood film examination for malaria. Accurate detection of microfilariae, especially in cases of low parasitemia, requires multiple blood smears and consideration of Wuchereria bancrofti's nocturnal periodicity, with blood collection ideally performed at night when parasitemia levels are highest. The presence of eosinophilia in

Comprehensive diagnosis of gastrointestinal parasites is largely reliant on traditional stool microscopy, despite gains in molecular diagnostics. Wet-mount examinations remain a significant challenge for traditional microscopy, digital microscopy, and artifical intelligence (AI). We developed and validated a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) model that provides highly sensitive detection and presumptive classification of enteric parasites. Twenty-seven different parasites were trained on a CNN model using a wide diversity of 4,049 unique parasite-positive specimens (determined by traditi

BACKGROUND: The phenomenon of street children, adolescents and young adults (SCAYA) is a growing global challenge. In Africa, >10 million children reside in the streets, driven by poverty, abuse and family instability. In Cameroon, this phenomenon is particularly evident in major cities. Being on the street exposes SCAYA to unsanitary living conditions, sexual exploitation, drugs and health challenges. Despite significant health challenges faced by SCAYA, there are few studies on their health status.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Yaoundé, Cameroon, from March to July 2022.

OBJECTIVES: This study assessed the prevalence of neglected infectious diseases among pregnant migrant women in a single referral center in Northern Italy, focusing on conditions not routinely included in antenatal screening or in the national list of free-of-charge examinations during pregnancy, such as malaria, schistosomiasis, strongyloidiasis, soil-transmitted helminthiases (STHs), human T-lymphotropic virus types 1/2 (HTLV-1/2), and Chagas disease.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective observational study at the Department of Infectious-Tropical Diseases and Microbiology (DITM), IRCCS Sa

BACKGROUND: Nematodes of the Ascarididae, Ancylostomatidae and Onchocercidae families are parasites of human and veterinary importance causing infections with high prevalence worldwide. Molecular tools have significantly improved the diagnosis of these helminthiases, but the selection of genetic markers for PCR or metabarcoding purposes is often challenging because of the resolution these may show.
METHODS: Nuclear 18S rRNA, internal transcribed spacers 1 (ITS-1) and 2 (ITS-2), mitochondrial gene cytochrome oxidase 1 (cox1) and mitochondrial rRNA genes 12S and 16S loci were studied for 30 spe

Tropical splenomegaly is often associated with malaria and schistosomiasis. In 2014 and 2015, 145 Congolese refugees in western Uganda diagnosed with splenomegaly during predeparture medical examinations underwent enhanced screening for various etiologies. After anecdotal reports of unresolved splenomegaly and complications after U.S. arrival, patients were reassessed to describe long-term clinical progression after arrival in the United States. Post-arrival medical information was obtained through medical chart abstraction in collaboration with state health partners in nine participating stat

BACKGROUND: Despite the high prevalence of helminth infections among preschool-aged children, control programs in sub-Saharan countries primarily focus on school-aged populations. We assessed the prevalence of helminth infections and determined risk factors for infection among preschool-aged children in the urban setting of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
METHODOLOGY: Starting in October 2015, we conducted a 12-month prospective study among tuberculosis (TB)-exposed children under the age of 5 years and unexposed controls from neighboring households. At the time of recruitment, we collected medical

BACKGROUND: Helminth infections are highly prevalent in tropical and subtropical countries, coexisting in Chagas disease endemic areas. Helminth infections in humans may modulate the host immune system, changing the Th1/Th2 polarization. This immunological disturbance could modify the immune response to other infections. The aim of this study is to evaluate the relationship between clinical, microbiological and epidemiological characteristics of Chagas disease patients, with the presence of helminth infection.
METHODS: A prospective observational study was conducted at Vall d'Hebron Universit

BACKGROUND: Studies conducted in high income countries have shown that anaemia is a common medical condition among older people, but such data are scarce in Africa. The objectives of this study were to estimate the prevalence, types, risk factors and clinical correlates of anaemia in older people.
METHODS: Participants were aged (≥ 50) years recruited from a general population cohort from January 2012 to January 2013. Blood samples were collected for assessing hemoglobin, serum ferritin, serum vitamin B12, serum folate, C-reactive protein, malaria infection and stool samples for assessment of

One of the major health problems among HIV-infected patients is the intestinal parasite infestations. It can be seen that intestinal helminth infestation in HIV-infected patients is common. However, the reported prevalence is usually similar to those of non HIV-infected patients in the same setting. The infestations are ordinary not opportunistic, hence, thus usually show no correlation to immune status of the patients. The suppression of immunity due to HIV infection shows no significant role in increasing the intestinal helminth infestations. On the other hand, having occult intestinal helmi

Forty-three patients who fulfilled the international criteria for prolonged fever were exposed to thorough history taking, clinical and laboratory investigations. The latter included urine and stool examination, urine and blood culture, haemogram, liver and renal function tests, chest X-ray, tuberculin test, bone marrow, liver biopsy, blood films, serological tests including ELISA, IHA and IFA for detection of schistosomiasis, toxoplasmosis and malaria. Parasitic infections were detected in 30/43 (69.7%), 55.8% of whom had pure parasitic infection and 14% had in addition other causes. The majo

Two horses with cerebrospinal nematodiasis (Micronema deletrix) had signs similar to those of other neurologic diseases resulting from parasitic (fly larvae, protozoa, or other helminths) migration through the central nervous system (CNS). In one horse (horse 1), a 13-year-old Paso Fino stallion, the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) was slightly xanthochromic (1+), with a pleocytosis (25 nucleated cells/microliter) and a normal protein level (69 mg/dl). A CSF differential cell count showed 15% neutrophils, 56% lymphocytes, 22% macrophages, 5% eosinophils, and 2% basophils. In the other horse (horse 2

In Dakar, through histopathological biopsies, the author looked for duodenal alterations in four parasitosis: giardiasis, strongyloidiasis, hookworms and ascaridiosis. He gives an overall survey on malabsorption in relation with intestinal parasitosis, including intestinal capillariosis and coccidiosis. He recalls basic concepts concerning each of these parasitic diseases, with a special mention to mucosal invasion and endogenous self reinfection during some parasitosis; he also emphasizes the importance of some diagnosis techniques (such as examination of duodenal fluid in relation to giardia

The frequency of intestinal parasitoses among subjects coming from warm countries is high and its range is similar to that found by other parasitologists in Europe as well as by those who made investigations in groups of individuals in various warm countries. Bearing in mind the pathogenous role--even limited--of certain parasites, their systematic detection and the treatment of every individual infested with parasites appears necessary. The hereby investigations point out the importance of a complex coproparasitologic examination and the high efficiency of some special diagnosis methods. Ever
