BACKGROUND: Co-infection with other microorganisms such as parasites in patients with COVID-19 can affect the clinical outcome and require prompt diagnosis and appropriate therapy.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of an adult male with chest pain, dyspnea, cough, diplopia, and anorexia who was confirmed to have acute COVID-19 pneumonia. 2 weeks prior to admission, a hydatid lung cyst was identified on examination, but the patient refused surgery. Thoracoabdominal computed tomography (CT) revealed a rupture of the lung hydatid cyst and co-infection with COVID-19. The patient has prescribed

BACKGROUND: Echinococcosis is an infectious parasitic disease that is extremely harmful to human health. Albendazole is provided free of charge to patients requiring medication under the central government finance transfer payment scheme for echinococcosis control and prevention in China. Our aim is to monitor the state of patient medication and its therapeutic impact, which will help improve medication compliance and the therapeutic effect.
METHODS: Random cluster sampling was used to select 10 echinococcosis-endemic counties in China, and all albendazole-treated patients in these counties w

This report describes a case of generalized knemidokoptic mange caused by Micnemidocoptes sp. in a bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus). In June 2024, an adult male eagle from Polk County, Arkansas, presented with severe skin disease and in a moribund state. The eagle died soon after capture and postmortem examination revealed extensive skin hyperkeratosis with embedded mites. Molecular analysis of a 632 bp fragment of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) gene showed the mite was 99.8 % similar to a Micnemidocoptes sp. from a golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) in California and

RATIONALE: We describe a case of hepatic cyst with intracystic bleeding that was preoperatively misdiagnosed as hepatic echinococcosis. Pain in the right upper quadrant of the abdomen was the first symptom to appear. In addition to highlighting the significance of imaging in distinguishing hepatic cyst with intracystic bleeding from other cystic liver tumors, we also talk about the difficulties and obstacles encountered throughout the diagnosis and treatment of this case. More imaging evidence for the diagnosis of hepatic cyst with intracystic bleeding is anticipated in this patient.

A 35-year-old man with fever and diarrhea visited our hospital because of white string-like fecal excretion. Based on a morphological examination of the excreted object, a Diphyllobothrium infection was suspected. Additionally, Gram staining of a fecal sample revealed Campylobacter infection. After the intraduodenal administration of meglumine/diatrizoate sodium, the tapeworm was excreted. A polymerase chain reaction-based DNA sequence analysis demonstrated that the tapeworm excreted in this case was Diphyllobothrium nihonkaiensis. This report presents a rare case of coinfection with Diphyllob

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) poses a serious health threat, particularly when untreated, necessitating accurate diagnosis. While the gold-standard method involves identifying amastigotes in bone marrow aspirate (BMA), this procedure is invasive and occasionally contraindicated. Additionally, when VL is associated with HIV infection the serologies accuracies could be affected. This study aims to evaluate and compare diagnostic methods for VL in patients with and without HIV coinfection. We enrolled prospectively 127 consecutive adult VL patients, 48 (37.8%) of whom had HIV coinfection, in Brazil

Structural heart disease (SHD) remains a significant global health challenge, disproportionately impacting populations in tropical regions where the burden of infectious diseases, limited healthcare infrastructure, and socio-economic disparities exacerbate the issue. The tropics are uniquely affected by conditions such as rheumatic heart disease (RHD), endomyocardial fibrosis, tropical cardiomyopathies, and pericardial diseases, often resulting from or complicated by endemic infections like malaria, dengue, tuberculosis, and parasitic diseases. Moreover, Human Immunodeficiency Virus-Associated

BACKGROUND: A human hookworm vaccine is being developed to protect children against iron deficiency and anaemia associated with chronic infection with hookworms. Necator americanus aspartic protease-1 (Na-APR-1) and N americanus glutathione S-transferase-1 (Na-GST-1) are components of the blood digestion pathway critical to hookworm survival in the host. Recombinant Na-GST-1 and catalytically inactive Na-APR-1 (Na-APR-1[M74]) adsorbed to Alhydrogel were safe and immunogenic when delivered separately or co-administered to adults in phase 1 trials in non-endemic and endemic areas. Toxoplasmal meningoencephalitis is a sporadic condition that is often misdiagnosed antemortem, frequently resulting in euthanasia especially in resource-limited settings. Here we report a case of a 7-week-old female domestic shorthair cat from an animal shelter who presented in a compromised condition and continued to display clinical signs consistent with a "failure to thrive" kitten. Weight loss and decreased activity were observed, and later on, neurological dysfunction became apparent. Based on clinical signs, non-effusive feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) was strongly suspected. Other p

BACKGROUND: Relapsing babesiosis often occurs in highly immunocompromised patients and has been attributed to the acquisition of resistance against drugs commonly used for treatment such as atovaquone, azithromycin, and clindamycin. Tafenoquine, which is approved for malaria prophylaxis and presumptive antirelapse treatment of Plasmodium vivax malaria, has shown activity against Babesia microti in several animal models of acute infection and in a single human case of relapsing babesiosis. Here, we report 5 cases of relapsing babesiosis treated with tafenoquine, including the previous case, and

Background: Women living with HIV (WLWH) are often coinfected with Trichomonas vaginalis (TV), and annual screening is recommended. Our goal was to assess differences in TV prevalence at study entry and over time in enrollment cohorts of the Women's Interagency HIV Study. Methods: In a multisite study, TV was diagnosed by wet mount microscopy. Prevalence was determined across four enrollment waves: 1994-1995, 2001-2002, 2011-2012, and 2013-2015. Generalized estimating equation multivariable logistic regression models assessed changes in visit prevalence across waves after controlling for HIV d

Trichomonas vaginalis infection typically exhibits a favorable response to treatment. Nonetheless, there are instances where complete eradication proves challenging, necessitating multiple treatment cycles. Understanding patient history and conducting thorough examinations are crucial in identifying the reasons behind therapeutic failures. We present a case study involving a patient with persistent trichomoniasis despite multiple treatment cycles, attributed to the presence of an intrauterine device inserted several years prior. This case underscores the intricacies involved in managing recurr

BACKGROUND: Cerebral malaria (CM) is a neuropathology which remains one of the deadliest forms of malaria among African children. The kinetics of the pathophysiological mechanisms leading to neuroinflammation and the death or survival of patients during CM are still poorly understood. The increasing production of cytokines, chemokines and other actors of the inflammatory and oxidative response by various local actors in response to neuroinflammation plays a major role during CM, participating in both the amplification of the neuroinflammation phenomenon and its resolution. In this study, we ai

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the parasitology laboratories dealing with fecal samples for the diagnosis of gastrointestinal parasitic infections are confronting the unsaved virus-containing samples. To allow for safe downstream processing of the fecal samples, a protocol for preparing a fecal smear is urgently needed. Formalin was tested with or without isotonic forms for virus inactivation using porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) as a representative, as it belongs to the Coronaviridae family. The results revealed complete inactivation activity of 10% formalin and 10% isotonic formalin on

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) control programs currently lack evidence-based recommendations for cost-efficient survey designs for monitoring and evaluation. Here, we present a framework to provide evidence-based recommendations, using a case study of therapeutic drug efficacy monitoring based on the examination of helminth eggs in stool.
METHODS: We performed an in-depth analysis of the operational costs to process one stool sample for three diagnostic methods (Kato-Katz, Mini-FLOTAC and FECPAKG2). Next, we performed simulations to determine the probability of detecting a truly

Nigeria is one of the countries in the world with the highest burden of malaria, accounting for a quarter of all cases in Africa. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, microscopic examination remains the gold standard for laboratory confirmation of malaria. However, the policy and practice of presumptive treatment of malaria for all febrile illnesses has been widely advocated in sub-Saharan Africa. Presumptive management of fevers and/or other symptoms of malaria results in over-diagnosis, and consequently overtreatment. This article discusses the overtreatment of malari

Pulmonary veno-occlusive disease (PVOD) is an extremely rare condition in oncology practice. Although PVOD is clinically similar to pulmonary arterial hypertension, the conditions differ in terms of pathophysiology, management, and prognosis. This report discusses the case of a 47-year-old woman who developed dyspnea and fatigue after high-dose cyclophosphamide chemotherapy and autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for relapsed lymphoma. The patient exhibited tachycardia, tachypnea, and hypotension, but other findings in the physical examination were unremarkable. The imaging stud
