Using Malarial Retinopathy to Improve the Diagnosis of Pediatric Cerebral Malaria.

In malaria endemic areas, a high proportion of children have detectable parasitemia but show no clinical symptoms. When comatose from a cause other than malaria, this group confounds the cerebral malaria (CM) definition, making accurate diagnosis challenging. One important biomarker of CM is malarial retinopathy, a set of specific features visible in the ocular fundus. In this study, we quantified the contribution of malarial retinopathy in discriminating malaria-caused coma from non-malaria-caused coma. We estimated that 10% of our study cohort of N = 1,192 patients who met the WHO clinical d

Prolonged fever and exaggerated hypercoagulopathy in malaria vivax relapse and COVID-19 co-infection: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) often causes atypical clinical manifestations similar to other infectious diseases. In malaria-endemic areas, the pandemic situation will very likely result in co-infection of COVID-19 and malaria, although reports to date are still few. Meanwhile, this disease will be challenging to diagnose in areas with low malaria prevalence because the symptoms closely resemble COVID-19. CASE PRESENTATION: A 23-year-old male patient presented to the hospital with fever, anosmia, headache, and nausea 1 week before. He was diagnosed with COVID-19 and treated

Folic acid supplementation and malaria susceptibility and severity among people taking antifolate antimalarial drugs in endemic areas.

BACKGROUND: Description of the condition Malaria, an infectious disease transmitted by the bite of female mosquitoes from several Anopheles species, occurs in 87 countries with ongoing transmission (WHO 2020). The World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that, in 2019, approximately 229 million cases of malaria occurred worldwide, with 94% occurring in the WHO's African region (WHO 2020). Of these malaria cases, an estimated 409,000 deaths occurred globally, with 67% occurring in children under five years of age (WHO 2020). Malaria also negatively impacts the health of women during pregnancy,

Approach to the Patient with a Skin and Soft Tissue Infection.

The diagnosis of a skin and soft tissue infection (SSTI) requires careful attention to a patient's history, physical examination, and diagnostic test results. We review for many bacterial, viral, fungal, and parasitic pathogens that cause SSTIs the clues for reaching a diagnosis, including reported past medical history, hobbies and behaviors, travel, insect bites, exposure to other people and to animals, environmental exposures to water, soil, or sand, as well as the anatomic site of skin lesions, their morphology on examination, and their evolution over time. Laboratory and radiographic tests

Relationships between specific antibody responses and clinical signs of dogs living in Tunisian endemic areas of canine leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania infantum.

The first step of the diagnostic process of canine leishmaniasis (CanL) is initiated by veterinarians and relies on their assessment of a high number of clinical signs common to other infectious diseases. We investigated herein the relationship between the clinical profile of 64 domestic dogs living in Tunisian endemic areas and their serological immune status with the aim to identify leishmanial serological markers of diagnosis and disease staging. Seven clinical signs were examined and a total clinical score that describes the number (TCS1) and the number plus the intensity of the clinical s

The clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients with fever of unknown origin caused by parasitic infection.

There are over 200 causes of fever of unknown origin (FUO), and although parasitic infection is an increasingly uncommon cause, a definitive diagnosis remains important to ensure rapid treatment and to prevent adverse sequelae through delay. Here, we studied the clinical features and outcomes of patients admitted with FUO and diagnosed with parasitic infection to improve our understanding of the features of parasitic FUO.Medical records of patients admitted to Peking Union Medical College Hospital between 2013 and 2019 with FUO and diagnosed with parasitic infection were reviewed. The clinical

Detection of Urinary Antibodies and Its Application in Epidemiological Studies for Parasitic Diseases.

For epidemiological studies of infectious diseases, pathogen-specific antibody levels in an area give us essential and appropriate information. The antibodies against pathogens are usually detected in blood, the drawing of which inconveniences people. Collection of blood increases the risk of accidental infections through blood, and it is difficult to obtain the participation of the target populations, especially the younger generation. On the other hand, urine samples, which contain a high enough level of antibodies for ELISA, can be harmlessly and easily collected and therefore have been use

Endoscopic procedure as a diagnostic tool for intestinal parasitic pathological changes.

Parasitic infections of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) may cause severe morbidity and even death in untreated patients. In certain cases, endoscopy may be the only possible option for diagnosis and management of GIT parasitic diseases. This study aimed to elucidate the role of endoscopy in the identification of GIT pathological changes during parasitic infections. Three hundred patients suffering from GIT manifestation were enrolled in this study. Stool samples were collected from all patients and examined for the presence of parasitic stages by direct and concentrated techniques. Parasite-i

Surgically resected hepatic mass caused by fascioliasis.

Fascioliasis is a parasitic infestation caused by the digenetic trematodes Fasciola hepatica and F. gigantica. It is not commonly seen in developed countries, so diagnosis there is always difficult as a result of confusion with other hepatic or biliary disorders. A 56-year-old man presented at our hospital with a hepatic mass that had been inadvertently discovered by ultrasonography. Abdominal computed tomography revealed a multi-cystic lesion distributed along the branch of the right bile duct. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography showed serrated changes ranging from the upper level

Prevalence of camel babesiosis in southeast of Iran.

Babesiosis is a globally distributed zoonotic parasitic disease in a broad range of vertebrates with great importance in the veterinary field. The standard diagnostic test for Babesiosis in animals is microscopic identification of the parasite in a venous blood smear stained with Giemsa combined with assessment of clinical manifestations throughout the acute phase of the disease. The present study was planned to determine the presence of Babesia species in camels from the southeastern regions of Iran. A total of 140 blood samples of camels were randomly collected in four selected cities includ

Oxidative stress in Strongylus spp. infected donkeys treated with piperazine citrate versus doramectin.

BACKGROUND: Parasitic infection is one of the main problems in equidae, particularly donkeys. AIM: This study evaluated the oxidative stress in donkeys infected with Strongylus spp by determining the correlation between antioxidants levels; malondialdehyde (MDA), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), and the severity of parasitic infection. It also compared the therapeutic efficacy of piperazine citrate as an oral anthelmintic drug and Doramectin as an injectable one. METHODS: The study was conducted on 40 donkeys naturally infected with Strongylus spp. These donkeys were divided into two groups

Case Report: Challenges for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Strongyloides stercoralis in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Patients.

Strongyloidiasis, a neglected tropical disease (NTD), which is caused by Strongyloides stercoralis, can be fatal in immunocompromised patients. In most chronic cases, infections most frequently are asymptomatic, and eosinophilia might be the only clinical characteristic of this disease. The use of corticosteroids in some diseases like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) may lead to the development of the life-threatening S. stercoralis hyperinfection syndrome. In the present research, we presented five cases of strongyloidiasis with a history of COPD and receiving corticosteroids from

Molecular diagnosis of scabies using a novel probe-based polymerase chain reaction assay targeting high-copy number repetitive sequences in the Sarcoptes scabiei genome.

BACKGROUND: The suboptimal sensitivity and specificity of available diagnostic methods for scabies hampers clinical management, trials of new therapies and epidemiologic studies. Additionally, parasitologic diagnosis by microscopic examination of skin scrapings requires sample collection with a sharp scalpel blade, causing discomfort to patients and difficulty in children. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based diagnostic assays, combined with non-invasive sampling methods, represent an attractive approach. In this study, we aimed to develop a real-time probe-based PCR test for scabies, test a

Prevalence of endoparasitic and viral infections in client-owned cats in metropolitan Bangkok, Thailand, and the risk factors associated with feline hookworm infections.

The prevalence of enteric parasites in cats in metropolitan Bangkok has not been updated in over 13 years. The main objectives of this study include updating the prevalence of endoparasitism in client-owned cats, status of retroviral infections and determining the association between feline hookworm infection and possible risk factors. A total of 509 fecal samples were collected from client-owned cats in 2014-2015 and examined by a wet fecal mount technique. If additional sample remained, a PBS-ethyl acetate sedimentation was done (n = 229), and ZnSO4 centrifugal flotation was also performed i

Paragonimus infection: Rare manifestation with pericardial effusion: A Case report and Literature review.

BACKGROUND: Paragonimus, is a globally distributed trematode, with human disease limited to endemic regions. It can be transmitted to humans through ingestion of intermediate hosts that are crustaceans. Most symptomatic infections consist of pulmonary disease, and in aberrant migration of immature flukes, extrapulmonary manifestations may occur. These presentations are relatively uncommon and may affect various organs with atypical Clinico-radiological pathologies that are often challenging to diagnose. Pericardial involvement has scarcely been reported before. Furthermore, the management, cli
