The association between non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (NHHR) and cancer prevalence among US adults: A cross-sectional study.

Lipid metabolism is recognized as a key player in carcinogenesis, but the association between the non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (NHHR) and overall cancer prevalence remains unclear in the US population. This study aimed to investigate the association between NHHR and cancer prevalence based on self-reported lifetime cancer diagnoses in a nationally representative US population. We utilized data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2007 to 2016. The primary exposure was NHHR, and the primary outcome was self-repo

Solid papillary carcinoma of the breast with high-grade cytological features: challenging the concept of indolence.

Solid papillary carcinoma (SPC) of the breast is a rare neoplasm typically regarded as a low-grade tumor with indolent behavior. We report two cases of SPC in elderly women presenting with palpable breast masses. Preoperative imaging demonstrated BI-RADS 4 suspicious lesions, and ultrasound-guided core needle biopsy suggested a papillary neoplasm consistent with SPC. Definitive histopathological examination revealed SPC with unusual high-grade cytological features, including marked atypia, increased mitotic activity, and an elevated Ki-67 proliferation index, despite the absence of conventiona

Case Report: Recurrent malignant phyllodes tumor with malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor-like differentiation and loss of H3K27me3/RB1 expression.

Malignant phyllodes tumor (MPT) is a rare breast neoplasm with high recurrence rates and potential for heterologous sarcomatous differentiation. Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor (MPNST)-like differentiation in MPT is exceptionally rare and presents considerable diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. We report a case of a 24-year-old female with recurrent MPT exhibiting MPNST-like differentiation and integrated immunophenotypic and genomic characterization. The patient initially presented in November 2023 with a 3.8 cm right breast MPT treated by wide local excision. Five months later, u

Colonic Angiosarcoma 16 Years After Pelvic Radiotherapy for Cervical Cancer: A Case Report.

Angiosarcomas are rare and aggressive malignant neoplasms of vascular or lymphatic endothelial origin, accounting for approximately 2% of soft-tissue sarcomas. They occur predominantly in the skin and superficial soft tissues, particularly in the head and neck region and the breast, whereas gastrointestinal involvement is exceptionally rare. Previous radiotherapy is a well-established risk factor for secondary angiosarcoma. However, radiation-associated gastrointestinal angiosarcomas are extremely uncommon and have been reported predominantly in the small bowel. We report the case of a 55-year

CT Colonography for Colorectal Cancer Prevention and Detection: Integration Into Clinical Practice, From the AJR Special Series on Screening.

CT colonography (CTC) is a CT examination performed with low radiation dose and typically without IV contrast material, optimized to detect colorectal polyps and cancer. Despite extensive supporting data, CTC has had variable acceptance and use over the past 2 decades, particularly for a main indication of colorectal cancer (CRC) screening. CTC is now at an inflection point after the approval in 2025 by CMS for reimbursement of CTC performed for CRC screening. Widespread use of CTC for CRC screening could help increase screening adherence rates and prevent cancer incidence. Nonetheless, radiol

Combination of the Circulating Tumor Cell Enumeration and the Fecal Immunochemical Test for Colorectal Neoplasia Prediction and Risk Evaluation of Colorectal Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal neoplasia contributes substantially to morbidity and mortality worldwide. Although fecal immunochemical test (FIT) has been adopted as a screening method, its limitations (suboptimal adherence to follow-up colonoscopy among the FIT-positive population and missed diagnosis in the FIT-negative population) hamper its effectiveness in reducing colorectal cancer. To address these issues, a combination of FIT with circulating tumor cell (CTC) enumeration for colorectal neoplasia prediction and colorectal cancer risk evaluation was proposed. METHODS: Participants (n = 113) und

Chylolymphatic mesenteric cyst in a young adult: a case report.

Mesenteric cysts are rare, benign tumors more commonly found in children than adults, accounting for 1 in 250 000 hospital admissions. Chylolymphatic mesenteric cysts arise from ectopic lymphatic proliferation in the mesentery and usually present with non-specific symptoms such as abdominal pain, swelling, or intestinal obstruction. Their variable presentation often delays diagnosis, which is frequently confirmed during surgical exploration. We report the case of a 25-year-old female presenting with abdominal swelling, pain, and nausea. Examination revealed a soft, non-tender right hemi-abdomi

Obesity, survival, and chemotherapy outcomes in stage IV colorectal cancer: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Obesity increases risk for colorectal cancer (CRC) development and historically has been connected to poor outcomes. The obesity paradox describes recent data showing that obesity may be protective in some diseases. This study examined the association between obesity and overall survival (OS) in stage IV CRC, evaluating factors that may contribute to disease course. METHODS: This was a single-institution, retrospective study of patients with stage IV CRC who underwent resection, chemotherapy, and/or radiation. Patients were grouped by body mass index (BMI) at diagnosis, as normal w

Mental- and physical health, and general well-being in patients with polyposis syndromes: a scoping review.

Polyposis syndromes are associated with an increased lifelong cancer risk in several organs as well as a commitment to regular examinations and risk-reducing surgery of healthy organs, which can be compared to living with a constant health threat. More recently conducted research on the topic is scarce, and, therefore, this scoping review synthesized data of existing research on mental and physical health and general well-being from the patients’ perspectives. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) was used. The search

Interaction of genetic and lifestyle risk scores on colorectal cancer risk across 5 racial and ethnic populations.

BACKGROUND: Integrating genetic and lifestyle information has the potential to greatly improve the prediction of colorectal cancer (CRC) risk. However, racial and ethnic minorities are generally underrepresented in gene-environment studies of CRC risk. METHODS: We investigated the interplay of genetics and lifestyle on CRC risk in a prospective analysis of 68 397 African American, Japanese American, Latino, Native Hawaiian, and White individuals from the Multiethnic Cohort Study. Genetic predisposition was assessed using a 205-variant polygenic risk score. Lifestyle was assessed using a lifes

Using wastewater for population-level colorectal cancer surveillance: a future research agenda.

BACKGROUND: Individual screening for colorectal cancer (CRC) is typically performed through either direct clinical examination, such as a colonoscopy, or an approved non-invasive test that measures CRC markers shed from the tumour into stool. There are known barriers to current screening recommendations. METHODS: We present feasibility data demonstrating the detection of CRC-associated RNA biomarkers in community wastewater. RNA expression values for GAPDH (housekeeping marker) and CDH1 (colorectal neoplasia-associated marker) were quantified via droplet digital PCR. The CDH1 region evaluated

Diagnostic performance of abbreviated non-contrast liver MRI for detecting synchronous colorectal liver metastases.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a leading malignancy, and colorectal liver metastases (CRLM) are common. Accurate detection is critical for staging and treatment planning. Although contrast-enhanced MRI is the reference standard, its use is limited by cost, longer examination time, and contraindications such as renal impairment or prior severe allergic reactions. This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic performance of an abbreviated non-contrast liver MRI protocol for detecting CRLM and to compare performance between experienced and in-training readers. The association between dietary index for gut microbiota and colorectal cancer prevalence in US adults: Findings from NHANES 2003 to 2023.

Emerging evidence suggests that diet plays a crucial role in shaping gut microbiota, which may influence the risk of colorectal cancer (CRC). This study examined the association between the dietary index for gut microbiota (DI-GM) and CRC prevalence in a nationally representative sample of US adults. This cross-sectional analysis used data from 31,547 adults aged ≥20 years participating in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2003 to 2023. Weighted logistic regression models estimated odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals for CRC across DI-GM scores, adjusting for demographi
