A practical approach for colorectal cancer diagnosis based on machine learning.

In this paper, we present the results of applying machine learning models to build a Colorectal Cancer Diagnosis system. The methodology encompasses six key steps: collecting raw data from Electronic Medical Records (EMRs), revising feature attributes with expert input, data preprocessing, model adaptation, training machine learning models (CART, Random Forest, and XGBOOST), and evaluating the results. Furthermore, based on analysis of experimental measurement parameter values, 21 feature attributes which relate to support early diagnose the Colorectal cancer disease are extracted. Among diffe

Correlation between endorectal ultrasonography, magnetic resonance imaging and final histological examination in patients undergoing surgery for rectal cancer: a monocentric study on the first 50 cases.

BACKGROUND: Endorectal ultrasound (ERUS) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are key diagnostic tools for rectal cancer staging. ERUS is preferred for early-stage cancer, while MRI is the standard for advanced stages. However, their effectiveness in patients undergoing neoadjuvant therapy (NAT) remains debated. This study compares ERUS and MRI in rectal cancer evaluation, correlating results with final histopathological findings and analyzing a subgroup of patients who received NAT. METHODS: A retrospective study (February 2020 to February 2024) included oncology patients with rectal cancer

Changes of peripheral blood lymphocytes, neutrophils, CEA, TAP and ferritin in colorectal adenoma and colorectal cancer and the diagnostic performance of these makers in evaluating colorectal cancer.

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: Colorectal cancer (CRC) has been recognized as a multifactorial disease arising from precursor lesions and characterized by chronic inflammation. Therefore, the inflammatory response is one of the critical indicators for the diagnosis of CRC. Timely and effective screening is an effective strategy to reduce the incidence and mortality of CRC. The primary aim of this study was to analyze the differences in white blood cell count (WBC) in patients with colorectal adenoma (CRA) and CRC. The second aim was to estimate the diagnostic performance of using a panel of serum

Human-Derived Proteome Characterization of Tongue Coating in Colorectal Cancer.

Most colorectal cancer (CRC) patients experience changes in tongue coating morphology, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. While the human-derived proteome of tongue coatings in gastric cancer and healthy individuals has been characterized, research on CRC patients remains lacking. The tongue coating collection process is painless and noninvasive, providing a more favorable examination experience. This study aims to preliminarily explore the composition and changes in the human-derived proteome of tongue coatings in CRC patients, providing insights into abnormal morphology and potent

Japanese narrow band imaging expert team classification of colorectal polyps: A validation study from India.

BACKGROUND: Japanese narrow band imaging expert team (JNET) classification has a diagnostic accuracy above 90% in differentiating neoplastic from non-neoplastic colonic polyps as well as estimating the depth of invasion in colorectal cancer. However, its validation outside Japan is limited to expert centers and requires magnifying endoscopes. AIMS AND METHODS: This study aimed at validating the JNET classification prospectively in a real-world setting in India using magnifying endoscopes with dual focus. We analyzed consecutive patients with colonic polyps detected via these endoscopes. The J

Involvement of community pharmacy pharmacists in fecal immunochemical test screening without government support in Japan.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common malignancy and second leading cause of death worldwide. However, the screening rate, which is a typical preventive measure, remains low. A community pharmacy pharmacist (CPP)-mediated procedure was used to increase the CRC screening rate. A total of 37 community pharmacies in Kagoshima, a core city in Japan, participated in this study. The results were statistically compared with the results of two procedures in Kagoshima City: hospital/clinic institution-mediated and health examination institution-mediated procedures. The cost was set at 1,100

ACR Appropriateness Criteria® Staging and Follow-up of Anal Cancer.

This document aims to provide recommendations on the role of imaging in the diagnosis of squamous cell anal cancer, focusing on its use in locoregional and systemic assessment during initial staging, posttreatment evaluation, and surveillance. For initial locoregional staging, MRI of the pelvis and FDG-PET/CT are usually appropriate to complement clinical and digital rectal examinations, because they offer additional information regarding locoregional tumor invasion and nodal metastases. For metastatic disease assessment, which is rare in the initial presentation and commonly associated with r

Research progress in multimodal radiomics of rectal cancer tumors and peritumoral regions in MRI.

Rectal cancer (RC) is one of the most common malignant tumors of the digestive system and has an alarmingly high incidence and mortality rate globally. Compared to conventional imaging examinations, radiomics can extract quantitative features that reflect tumor heterogeneity and mine data from medical images. In this review, we discuss the potential value of multimodal MRI-based radiomics in the diagnosis and treatment of RC, with a special emphasis on the role of peritumoral tissue characteristics in clinical decision-making. Existing studies have shown that a radiomics model integrating intr

A case of jejunal cancer arising from ectopic pancreas.

A 74-year-old man presented with intestinal obstruction. CT (computed tomography) revealed a 25-mm mass in the proximal jejunum. Double-balloon endoscopy (DBE) identified a smooth, asymmetrically localized mass with oozing and luminal stenosis covered with the mucosa of swollen villi. Small bowel radiography demonstrated jejunal obstruction. Histopathological examination of the resected specimen confirmed moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma arising from ectopic pancreatic tissue of Heinrich type I. Our case suggests that cancer arising from ectopic pancreas should be considered as a candi

Prospective clinical cohort study on the accuracy of magnetic resonance imaging in preoperative staging for cancer of the rectum with node-by-node analysis by pathologists.

OBJECTIVE: Multidisciplinary treatment is the standard of care for patients with cancer of the rectum. Neoadjuvant therapy decisions rely on the local carcinoma stage's magnetic resonance imaging assessment. However, the reliability of magnetic resonance imaging in evaluating mesorectal lymphadenopathy remains highly questionable. METHODS: A prospective clinical study was conducted to assess the accuracy of preoperative magnetic resonance imaging in assessing T-stage and N-stage rectal carcinoma. The magnetic resonance imaging findings were compared with those of a detailed histopathological
