In this study, 25 dogs each with a histopathologically diagnosed appendicular or axial osteosarcoma were prospectively and consecutively examined by methylene diphosphate nuclear scintigraphy. Scannings that revealed scintigraphically enhanced focal increased activity via bone uptake of the 99mTc methylene diphosphate radionuclide at sites other than the primary tumor site were compared with scintigrams obtained from dogs without osteosarcoma. Esophageal involvement of non-Hodgkin's lymphomas is extremely unusual; primary lymphoma of the esophagus is even less common. This report describes a case of malignant small lymphocytic-plasmacytoid lymphoma with primary esophageal localization. To assess the role of delay and other factors in determining stage of cancer at diagnosis, the authors interviewed a population-based sample of 800 elderly persons with newly diagnosed cancer at selected sites. Lengthening delay interval was associated with a declining proportion of local stage cases for breast cancer but not other sites. Between 1980 and 1990, 580 patients with known malignant lymphoma were referred for sonography for evaluation of abdominal masses as a part of the initial staging of the disease. Oral lesions associated with HIV infection as classified by the WHO Collaborative Centre for Oral manifestation of HIV were studied in 83 heterosexual AIDS patients in Kinshasa, Zaire. One or more lesions were fungal (94%), bacterial (33%) and viral (23%). Neoplasm was found in 12% of cases while lesions of unknown etiology in 14%. As location of those lesions, the palate, lips, tongue and the buccal mucosae mostly predominate as sites. The findings from this study were clinically similar to those reported in AIDS in other areas.

A review was conducted of 335 malignant melanomas to identify variant morphologic patterns that might be confused with other tumors. In all, 27 predominantly amelanotic neoplasms with unusual histologic features were selected for additional study. Seventeen cases of pediatric malignant neoplasm with pulmonary and/or pleural lesions shown by chest radiography at initial diagnosis were reviewed and analyzed. Previously, we conducted a study of 35,074 patients receiving diagnostic doses of 131I for suspected thyroid disorders between 1951 and 1969. We reported that, between 1958 and 1984, the incidence of thyroid cancers in these patients was insignificantly greater than the incidence expected in the general population. Metastasis of unknown origin (MUO) constitutes between 5% and 10% of all noncutaneous cancers. An MUO is defined as a metastatic tumor for which the site of origin is not suggested by thorough history, physical examination, chest x-ray studies, routine blood and urine studies, and histologic evaluation. Hodgkin's disease may now be managed with several different regimens with the expectation of curing approximately 90 per cent of patients. Radiotherapy alone achieves this cure rate only in unilateral high cervical or inguinal stage 1 presentations. The records of 122 patients with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma were reviewed, and the findings of the gallium scan analyzed. The scans of 93 patients were reread without knowledge of the previous readings. Two nuclear medicine physicians agreed with the original readings in 70 per cent of the cases and with each other in 89 per cent of the cases.
