BACKGROUND: The assessment of metastatic breast cancer (MBC) can be limited with routine imaging such as computed tomography (CT) especially in bone-only or bone-predominant disease. This analysis investigates the effects of the use of WBMRI in addition to the use of routine CT, bone scintigraphy (BS) and fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography with computed tomography (FDG-PET/CT) on influencing systemic anti-cancer treatment (SACT) decisions in patients with known MBC.
METHODS: MBC patients undergoing SACT who had WBMRI undertaken within 8 weeks of either a routine CT, B

BACKGROUND: One of the difficulties in the treatment of esophageal cancer surgery is the high rate of postoperative recurrence. After esophagectomy, distant metastatic recurrence frequently occurs in the lung. This study aimed to determine the clinical features of a recurrence pattern with lung metastasis.
METHODS: The current study analyzed data from 138 patients who had postoperative recurrence of esophageal cancer after a radical esophagectomy. According to the recurrence pattern at the time of initial diagnosis, the patients were classified into two groups as follows: those with lung meta

Chordoma is a rare malignant neoplasm derived from notochordal tissue that primarily affects the axial skeleton. Almost 40% of patients have non-cranial chordoma metastases. The most common metastatic sites are the lungs, bones, lymph nodes, and subcutaneous tissue. We present a 52-year female with a history of sacral chordoma presenting with abdominal fullness, early satiety, and a palpable abdominal mass. Abdominal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed an isolated, highly vascularized, and multilobed liver mass in the left lateral segment. The mass was surgically removed using a clean su

BACKGROUND: Higher body mass index is associated with a higher incidence of colorectal cancer (CRC) but also with improved survival in metastatic CRC (mCRC). Whether weight change after mCRC diagnosis is associated with survival remains largely unknown.
METHODS: We analysed individual patient data for previously untreated patients enrolled in five phase 3 randomised trials conducted between 1998 and 2006. Weight measurements were prospectively collected at baseline and up to 59.4 months after diagnosis. We used stratified multivariable Cox models to assess the prognostic associations of weigh

IMPORTANCE: Obesity rates have risen in the United States since the 1980s. Several studies have shown links between obesity and the incidence of specific cancer types, but none have systematically examined obesity prevalence at the time of cancer diagnosis, or among clinical trial participants, all of which may affect clinical outcomes.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the prevalence of obesity and, separately, overweight and obesity over 30 years among patients with cancer enrolled in clinical treatment trials for obesity-related cancers; and to compare trends with corresponding trends in the US.
DESI

BACKGROUND: WHO recommends human papillomavirus (HPV) testing and same-day treatment for cervical screening in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs); however, few published data exist on the validity of the strategy. We aimed to evaluate the clinical performance, treatment completion rates, adverse events profile, and acceptability of a fully integrated strategy, comprising point-of-care HPV DNA testing of self-collected specimens and same-day thermal ablation, for screening of cervical cancer in women in Papua New Guinea.
METHODS: HPV-STAT was a large-scale, prospective, single-arm

BACKGROUND: Hemangioblastoma is an indolent mesenchymal tumor most frequently occurring in the central nervous system (CNS), but can also arise extraneuraxially, as part of Von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) disease or in sporadic tumors. Extraneuraxial hemangioblastomas occur outside the central nervous system. It includes tumors arising from the nervous paraneuraxial structures and visceral organs. Sporadic hemangioblastoma of the kidney, a rare subset of extraneuraxial hemangioblastomas, is an under-recognized renal neoplasm. There have been only 25 cases described to date in the English language lite

Mucinous syringometaplasia is a rare and poorly recognized entity that usually presents as a warty tumor in acral regions. It is more frequent in men, and the age of presentation is variable. Typically, it has been reported as a solitary lesion with a warty appearance that occasionally can drain serous material. The affected sites include head, neck, breast, acral regions, and buttocks. The evolution over time is variable. The pathogenesis has not been elucidated. Diagnosis is established through histopathology, the characteristic feature is an epidermal invagination, which creates a structure

BACKGROUND Myelolipoma is a benign tumor, commonly found in the supra-renal gland, which is composed of mature fatty tissue admixed with hematopoietic elements. However, there are several extra-adrenal sites reported in the literature and thoracic myelolipoma is an unusual location for extra-adrenal myelolipoma. CASE REPORT We present the case of a 71-year-old man previously diagnosed with hypertension who was admitted due to a motor vehicle injury with a lumbar spine fracture. The patient developed non-ST segment elevation myocardial infarction during admission. A coronary angiogram revealed

Soft-tissue lesions in the oral cavity, one of the most common sites for tumors and tumor-like lesions, can be challenging to diagnose and treat due to the wide spectrum from benign indolent to invasive malignant lesions. We report an abnormally large, rapidly growing hyperplastic lesion originating from the buccal mucosa in a 28-year-old male patient. Clinical examination revealed a well-circumscribed, smooth-surfaced, pinkish nodular lesion measuring 2.3 × 2 cm, which suggested the differential diagnosis of irritation fibroma, pyogenic granuloma, oral lipoma, and other benign or malignant ne

Postchemotherapy histiocyte-rich pseudotumor is a rare event in lymphoma patients and can cause elevated metabolic activity on positron emission tomography-computed tomography scan mimicking residual tumor. Here, we reported 11 lymphoma cases showing mass-like lesions with increased fluorodeoxyglucose uptake after chemotherapy. These postchemotherapy lesions occurred in various anatomic sites including spleen, mediastinum, lymph node, and other tissue locations, concerning for refractory or residual lymphoma. Their median size was 2.7 cm (range, 1.4 to 7.7 cm) and the median standardized uptak

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) of the skin is a rare, aggressive form of skin cancer that metastasizes to other parts of the body. This cutaneous neuroendocrine tumour mainly affects older people, with most cases generally occurring over the age of 50 years. Merkel cell polyomavirus has been shown to induce gene mutations resulting in this skin cancer, with immunosuppression and ultraviolet radiation being other key risk factors in its pathogenesis. MCC is clinically seen as a rapidly enlarging, isolated, irregular erythematous nodule typically found on sun-exposed sites. Diagnosis is through cli

INTRODUCTION: All colorectal cancer (CRC) survivors have an increased risk of developing second primary malignancies (SPMs). The association between diabetes mellitus (DM) and the risk of cancer is well known. However, the role of DM and its therapy in the development of SPMs in CRC patients is not well described.
METHODS: In this single-institutional retrospective analysis we identified 1,174 colorectal carcinoma patients, median follow-up 10.1 years, (median age 63 years, 724 men). All patients over 18 years with histologically confirmed CRC who were admitted in the period 1.1. 2003- 31.12.

Alveolar soft part sarcoma (ASPS) is a rare soft tissue sarcoma characterized by an alveolar or organoid arrangement of polygonal tumour cells separated by fibrovascular septa. A specific fusion gene [ASPS critical region 1 (ASPSCR1)-TFE3] was detected in ASPS. Despite being a slow-growing tumour without pain and dysfunction, ASPS is characterized by early metastasis, which leads to poor prognosis. Herein, we report a rare case of primary ASPS of the cheek harbouring ASPSCR1 (exon 7)-TFE3 (exon 5) fusion gene in a 21 year-old woman. This tumour was a well-circumscribed, smooth, round mass that

IMPORTANCE: For lung cancer screening to confer mortality benefit, adherence to annual screening with low-dose computed tomography scans is essential. Although the National Lung Screening Trial had an adherence rate of 95%, current data are limited on screening adherence across diverse practice settings in the United States.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate patterns and factors associated with adherence to annual screening for lung cancer after negative results of a baseline examination, particularly in centralized vs decentralized screening programs.

A retrospective analysis of 7 patients of multiple myeloma (MM) with initial manifestation of bleeding and coagulation abnormalities were performed. Clinical manifestations, laboratory and imaging examinations were collected. The activity of coagulation factors was measured before the treatment. Single factor X deficiency was seen in one patient. Two cases had factor Ⅶ deficiency, while four other patients had multiple factor deficiency. The time from onset of symptoms to diagnosis ranged from 2 to 10 months. After anti-MM treatment started and plasma or coagulation factors were transfused, th

BACKGROUND Primary breast small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma is a rare subtype of breast cancer with about 57 cases reported in the literature. This rare type of cancer represents about 0.1% of breast carcinomas. Recently, the World Health Organization defined this type of cancer as a separate entity from other breast cancer types. The diagnosis of this type of cancer in the breast is difficult because the histological pattern is similar to the small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of other more common primary sites of origin, including the lung. CASE REPORT A 39-year-old woman presented to our
