A cross-sectional study on the relationship between hepatitis C virus infection and the risk of sleep disorders among adults based on NHANES data from 2017 to 2020: A cross-sectional study.

Patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection often report sleep‑related complaints, but the relationship between HCV and clinically significant sleep disturbances remains poorly defined. This cross‑sectional study aimed to explore whether HCV infection is associated with an increased risk of sleep disorder among adults. Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2017 to 2020 were analyzed. HCV infection status and sleep disorder were assessed using standardized questionnaires. Covariates including gender, age, race, marital status, alcohol use, body mass index, diabetes

Beyond Body Mass Index Cutoffs: Donor Quality and Ischemic Burden Shape Kidney Transplant Outcomes in Recipients With Severe Obesity: An Analysis of the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients Dataset.

OBJECTIVES: Obesity remains a common barrier to kidney transplant access, but the clinical relevance of severe obesity depends on donor and ischemic risk. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients aggregate summary tables for deceased donor kidney transplants performed in the United States from January 1, 2014, to December 31, 2024, stratified by recipient body mass index (calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared) of <35, 35 to 40, and >40. Primary outcomes measured were graft survival and delayed graft function. We compared d

Paradoxical Association of Body Mass Index With Occurrence and Mortality of Venous Thromboembolism in Hospitalized Patients: A National Hospital-Based Cohort Analysis.

BACKGROUND: The association between body mass index (BMI) and venous thromboembolism (VTE) occurrence and mortality is controversial. This study aimed to investigate the association of BMI with VTE occurrence and mortality and explore the consistency across age, sex, and medical specialty. METHODS: This study included 3 199 526 inpatients at potential risk for VTE from a nationwide hospital-based cohort. Participants were categorized as lean weight (BMI <18.5 kg/m2), normal weight (18.5 ≤BMI<24.0 kg/m2), overweight (24.0 ≤BMI <28.0 kg/m2), and obesity (BMI ≥28.0 kg/m2). Odds ratios (ORs) were

Contemporary Analysis of the Volume-Outcome Relationship for Patients With Nontraumatic Subarachnoid Hemorrhage.

BACKGROUND: Nontraumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) carries a substantial mortality burden and risk of long-term morbidity. Although prior investigations have demonstrated an inverse association between SAH admission volume and in-hospital mortality, reported thresholds remain broad. Importantly, the relative importance of both admission and procedural volume has yet to be evaluated on a national scale. We examined the association of volume metrics with outcomes in an SAH cohort. METHODS: All adult (≥18 years) hospitalizations with a primary diagnosis of nontraumatic SAH were identified fr

Global Prevalence of Adherence to Antihypertensives and Associated Moderating Factors Among Adults With Hypertension: A Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Hypertension is a significant public health issue affecting over a billion adults worldwide with adherence to antihypertensives being crucial for achieving sustained blood pressure control and reducing cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. To extend previous evidence, we conducted a meta-analysis on global prevalence of adherence to antihypertensives among adults. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted in Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and CINAHL. Pooled prevalence of antihypertensive medication adherence was estimated using generalized linear mixed-effects model in

Rapid CSF Molecular Diagnosis of Listeria monocytogenes Meningoencephalitis in an Elderly Immunocompetent Patient: A Case Report.

Background/Objectives: Listeria monocytogenes is an uncommon but potentially life-threatening cause of central nervous system infection, predominantly affecting older adults and immunocompromised patients. Neurolisteriosis may present with nonspecific neurological manifestations, and the absence of classical meningeal signs may delay diagnosis. We report a case of L. monocytogenes meningoencephalitis in an elderly patient without known immunosuppression, with rapid cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) molecular testing facilitating early diagnosis and appropriate antimicrobial treatment. Case presentatio

The Reliability and Validity of Active Range of Motion Measurement for Fingers Using Three-Dimensional Motion Analysis.

The Fugl-Meyer Assessment (FMA) and Range of Motion (ROM) are well-known measures for evaluating finger motor function. However, the finger FMA has a narrow scoring range, and goniometer ROM measurements lack reliability. Therefore, we investigated ROM measurement using a 3D motion capture system (Ultraleap Stereo IR 170, Ultraleap Ltd., Bristol, UK, hereinafter referred to as Ultraleap). This study aimed to evaluate the intra- and inter-rater reliability of finger Active ROM (A-ROM) using Ultraleap, and its criterion-related validity compared to a goniometer, in stroke patients with upper lim

Body weight following a multidomain lifestyle intervention in older adults at risk of dementia - A post-hoc analysis of the AgeWell.de-trial.

BACKGROUND: Lifestyle interventions provide a promising approach to address higher body weight as a risk factor for dementia. OBJECTIVE: The AgeWell.de-trial was primarily designed to preserve cognitive function and reduce dementia risk. In this post-hoc analysis, we investigated body weight following the multidomain intervention among older adults with overweight or obesity, as well as the role of motivation and confidence regarding weight loss. METHODS: Analyses used data from the cluster-randomized AgeWell.de-trial, testing a multidomain intervention (dietary counselling, enhancement of p

Assessment of survivin mRNA expression level and its serum level in patients with diabetic retinopathy.

Diabetic patients may suffer from diabetic retinopathy (DR) which may result in vision loss. Apoptosis is essential in vascular remodeling. Survivin inhibits endothelial cell apoptosis and enhances angiogenesis. Diabetic vasculopathy can increase survivin expression. Our aim is to measure the clinical significance of survivin mRNA expression and its serum level with DR as predictors for disease prognosis. Thirty patients with DR; thirty without DR and thirty healthy persons were included as controls (employees and attendants for checkup with normal HA1c level). Ophthalmic examination, best cor

Long-term National Trends in the Prevalence of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and the Association with Social Determinants of Health in Korean Adults, 2007-2024.

BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is linked to social determinants of health (SDOH); however, long-term trends in its prevalence and the association with SDOH remain unclear. Thus, we investigated national trends in T2DM prevalence and the cumulative burden of SDOH. METHODS: We analyzed data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2007-2024), including adults aged ≥ 19 years. T2DM was defined by physician diagnosis, use of anti-diabetic medication, fasting glucose ≥ 126 mg/dL, or hemoglobin A1c ≥ 6.5%. SDOH was assessed across seven key domains-education lev

Classical Hodgkin lymphoma as a second malignancy in a patient with cervical squamous cell carcinoma following chemoradiotherapy: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Concurrent chemoradiotherapy is the established standard treatment for locally advanced cervical cancer. However, it may increase the risk of second primary malignancies in long-term survivors. In our study, we present a case of classical Hodgkin lymphoma (cHL) arising as a secondary neoplasm in a patient with cervical squamous cell carcinoma who was treated with definitive chemoradiotherapy. By presenting this case, we try to find the relation between chemoradiotherpy and cHL and we emphasize the key element to diagnose cHL. CASE DESCRIPTION: The patient was a 65-year-old woman d

Unexpected Peritoneal Loose Body Discovered During Laparoscopic Varicocelectomy: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Peritoneal loose bodies (PLBs) are rare, benign intraperitoneal entities usually discovered incidentally during abdominal surgery or imaging. Their occurrence during urologic laparoscopy appears to be infrequently reported and may create intraoperative diagnostic uncertainty when encountered unexpectedly. CASE REPORT A healthy 22-year-old Jordanian man with no history of abdominal or pelvic surgery underwent bilateral laparoscopic varicocelectomy for symptomatic varicoceles. Dense sigmoid adhesions over the left internal inguinal ring required careful adhesiolysis to expose the sper

Pulmonary Valve Amyloid Deposition Mimicking Infective Endocarditis in Val30Met Hereditary Transthyretin Amyloidosis.

A 53-year-old man with Val30Met hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis (hATTR) developed a highly mobile pulmonary valve mass with severe pulmonary regurgitation. Concomitant methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) bacteremia raised suspicion for infective endocarditis. Echocardiography and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging characterized the lesion but could not establish its etiology. Surgical excision and pulmonary valve replacement were performed, and histopathological examination demonstrated Congo red-positive amyloid deposition. This case highligts that atypical cardiac manifes

Immune checkpoint inhibitor-associated interstitial nephritis: let's move forward addressing the unknowns.

Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) are now well recognized as a cause of acute interstitial nephritis (ICI-AIN), and their increasingly widespread use explains the growing incidence of reported cases. This clinicopathological entity is characterized by acute kidney injury with a tubulointerstitial pattern occurring in a patient exposed to an ICI, and histological confirmation is required to establish the diagnosis. Histopathological examination typically reveals a lymphocytic infiltrate, supporting the use of corticosteroid therapy for ∼12 weeks, which enables recovery of kidney function in >
