Beyond BMI: body composition phenotypes and their systemic inflammatory profiles in patients with osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture.

PURPOSE: Body mass index (BMI) cannot distinguish fat from muscle mass, masking metabolic heterogeneity. We aimed to characterize body composition phenotypes based on the intersection of BMI and low muscle mass in patients with osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture (OVCF), and to compare systemic inflammatory profiles across phenotypes. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 245 hospitalized OVCF patients aged ≥ 50 years were consecutively enrolled. Appendicular muscle mass was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, and low muscle mass was defined per the 2025 Asian Working Grou

Predicting insulin resistance in non-diabetics: Comparing obesity indicators using machine learning.

This cross-sectional study aimed to compare obesity indicators for predicting insulin resistance using machine learning. Data were obtained from NHANES 2015 to 2018, focusing on a nondiabetic adult population. Insulin resistance was defined as HOMA-IR ≥ 75th percentile of the training set. Key predictors were selected via bootstrap stability selection with elastic net. Logistic regression, random forest, and extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) models were built using body mass index (BMI) and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR). Performance was assessed by area under the curve (AUC), sensitivity, spe

Gestational weight gain status and body satisfaction among Kurdish women: a cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Appropriate gestational weight gain (GWG) is crucial for predicting maternal and infant morbidity and mortality, and is considered a key indicator of maternal and child health status worldwide. While excessive GWG is a concern in high- income countries, the prevalence of obesity and inadequate GWG remains unclear among Kurdish women. This study aimed to assess the status of gestational weight gain and body satisfaction among Kurdish pregnant women. METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted among pregnant women attending antenatal care in two randomly selected primary healt

Underweight Versus Obesity and Gastrointestinal Cancer Mortality in Type 2 Diabetes: A Nationwide Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Underweight is a well-established risk factor for cancer mortality, yet its impact relative to obesity remains unclear in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), where current guidelines focus primarily on obesity management with limited guidance on underweight-related risks. We evaluated the association between body mass index (BMI) and gastrointestinal (GI) cancer mortality across the full BMI spectrum in individuals with T2DM. METHODS: This nationwide population-based cohort study utilized the Korean National Health Insurance Service database. We included 2 507 976 ad

Dual benefit of esketamine-based opioid-free anesthesia on postoperative pain and mental health outcomes in patients undergoing bariatric surgery: a randomized controlled trial.

Patients with morbid obesity are at a high risk of comorbid depressive and anxiety symptoms. While bariatric surgery is an effective treatment, conventional opioid-based anesthesia carries significant perioperative risks. Opioid-free anesthesia (OFA) presents a safer alternative. Esketamine, known for its dual analgesic and rapid antidepressant effects, is a promising component of OFA. However, clinical evidence supporting its simultaneous benefits for both physical and psychological recovery in bariatric patients remains limited. In this double-blind, randomized clinical trial, patients sched

Early Detection of Infants Aged Under Six Months at Risk of Poor Growth and Development: Secondary Analysis of a Prospective Cohort in Senegal.

Child malnutrition is a major global problem, but in many high-burden countries, screening and treatment of acute malnutrition called wasting (weight-for-length z-score < -2SD) only begins at age 6 months. Infants under 6 months 'at risk of poor growth and development' are, however, increasingly recognised. Latest 2023 WHO guidelines describe anthropometric, feeding and maternal/infant clinical criteria for early detection and treatment. We aimed to explore the value of these criteria to early detect infants at risk of wasting at 6 months. We conducted a secondary analysis of a prospective obs

Examining the relationship between anthropometric and body composition measures with coronary heart disease events: the multi-ethnic study of atherosclerosis.

AIMS: Obesity, traditionally measured using body mass index (BMI), is considered a significant risk factor for the development of cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, there have been mixed findings regarding the association between obesity and cardiovascular events in part due to the way it is measured. Major limitations exist with the use of BMI as it cannot assess body composition or fat distribution, and thus fails to account for the separate roles of muscle and fat mass (FM). The objective is to examine the relationship between various measures of body composition including FM, fat-free

Beyond BMI: the predictive value of body roundness index for cardiovascular mortality and related disparities: a national cohort study of US adults.

AIMS: Obesity, particularly visceral adiposity, is a key driver of cardiovascular mortality (CVM), yet conventional measures such as body mass index (BMI) inadequately capture fat distribution. The Body Roundness Index (BRI) is a novel anthropometric measure integrating waist circumference and height to better reflect body shape and visceral fat. This study examined the association between BRI and CVM in U.S. adults and across sociodemographic subgroups. METHODS AND RESULTS: We analysed data from 31 351 adults (median age 43 yrs, 50% females) aged ≥20 years in NHANES 1999-2018, excluding thos

Nonlinear association between the triglyceride-cholesterol-body weight index and GLIM-defined hospital-acquired malnutrition among Chinese hospitalized adults: a multicenter prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Hospital-acquired malnutrition (HAM) is prevalent and harmful. Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria lack lipid metabolism information, impeding admission risk identification. TCBI integrates lipids and energy reserve, but its predictive utility for HAM remains unclear. METHODS: This multicenter prospective study (June-September 2014, 34 tertiary hospitals in mainland China) consecutively enrolled 3,382 non-critically ill adults without malnutrition at admission and with hospital stays of 7-30 days. TCBI was calculated as triglyceride (mg/dL) × total cholest
