OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to characterize tricuspid valve sound signals in healthy fetuses during the first trimester of pregnancy using Doppler ultrasound and computational analysis.
METHODS: A cohort of pregnant women at 11-14 weeks of normal-risk gestation was assessed at the Instituto de Medicina Integral Prof. Fernando Figueira (IMIP) between December 2019 and May 2020. Eligible participants were over 18 years old with no pregnancy complications. Doppler recordings of the fetal tricuspid valve were obtained, and linear (wave duration) and non-linear analyses were performed, including a

BACKGROUND: Tricuspid regurgitation (TR) is increasingly identified during routine fetal echocardiography. Mild, transient TR may occur in structurally normal hearts, but in some cases, it reflects early hemodynamic imbalance or evolving pathology. This review summarizes current evidence on whether fetal TR in structurally normal hearts is clinically meaningful or simply a physiological finding.
METHODS: A structured literature search was performed in PubMed/MEDLINE and Embase for studies published in English between January 2016 and January 2026. The search was limited to studies published f

BACKGROUND Aplasia cutis congenita (ACC) is a rare congenital disorder characterized by localized absence of skin at birth, with an incidence of approximately 1 in 10 000 live births. Type V ACC, according to Frieden's classification, is associated with fetus papyraceus or placental infarction and typically presents with symmetrical lesions on the trunk and extremities. Cases associated solely with a single umbilical artery are exceptionally rare. CASE REPORT We present a singleton male infant born at 39 weeks' gestation via cesarean section due to fetal distress and oligohydramnios. Physical

Congenital malformations remain one of the leading causes of perinatal mortality in India. These anomalies encompass a wide range of chromosomal abnormalities, inborn errors of metabolism, and other Mendelian disorders. We report a case of a four-day-old male neonate presenting with multiple congenital anomalies consistent with features of Trisomy 13, a rare chromosomal disorder, which ultimately led to neonatal death. An important observation was also made regarding the hydrostatic test-a procedure traditionally used to determine whether a newborn was liveborn or stillborn. This test, however

China possesses a particularly high diversity of Ganoderma, a genus of fungi with significant pharmacological relevance. This study provides an integrative taxonomic revision of Chinese Ganoderma species, utilizing a four-locus molecular dataset (ITS, nrLSU, TEF1-α, and RPB2) in conjunction with comprehensive morphological and ecological analyses. Two new species from southwestern China, G. roseogelatum () sp. nov. and G. sinolucidum () sp. nov., are described and illustrated. G. sinolucidum has previously been misidentified as the European G. lucidum throughout eastern and southeastern Asia.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the distribution of fetal nuchal translucency thickness in normal and chromosomally abnormal fetuses in Sardinia and to determine the effectiveness of screening by a combination of fetal nuchal translucency and maternal age.
METHODS: Fetal nuchal translucency thickness and crown-rump length were measured at 10-14 weeks of gestation in 12 495 pregnancies. A reference range of fetal nuchal translucency thickness for crown-rump length was determined from the 10 001 singleton pregnancies with known normal pregnancy outcome. The median nuchal translucency thickness for crown-

End-stage renal disease is closely associated with changes in bone and mineral metabolism. In recent times, osteoporosis has become important among hemodialysis (HD) patients. In this study, the investigators sought to evaluate the relationship between bone mineral density (BMD) and biochemical markers of bone turnover among HD patients. A total of 70 uremic patients on a maintenance HD program for at least 1 y were enrolled in the study. All patients were treated with conventional bicarbonated HD for 5 h through the use of low-flux hollow-fiber dialyzers. Bone densitometry was measured by dua

The azoospermia factor (AZF) region on the long arm of the Y chromosome is instrumental in spermatogenesis. In particular, complete deletion of the AZFa, AZFb, and AZFb + c regions is not an indication for microdissection testicular sperm extraction (MD-TESE) as there is no chance of sperm retrieval. This report presents a rare case of a successful live birth, following intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) using sperm from a patient with a microdeletion of the Y chromosome, including part of the AZFb, c region, who underwent MD-TESE. A 3X-year-old Japanese man with azoospermia was admitted

BACKGROUND: Extensive or atypical dermal melanocytosis (EDM) is abnormal macular blue/black skin pigmentation that can be associated with other congenital abnormalities and an increased risk of melanoma. It is probably underdiagnosed due to phenotypic overlap with common transient dermal melanocytosis (so-called 'blue spots'), and is frequently misdiagnosed as congenital melanocytic naevi. The genetic cause has remained largely unknown, with mosaic variants in only one gene, GNAQ, described in only a handful of cases to date.
OBJECTIVES: To improve our understanding of EDM by combining deep p

The month of March is dedicated to Colon Cancer Awareness. Worldwide, colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence has been on the rise. It is currently the third most common cancer in men (746,000 cases, 10.0% of the total) and the second in women (614,000 cases, 9.2% of the total).1 Arecent meta-analysis reported a 61% risk reduction in CRC incidence with colonoscopy.2 Unlike screening programs for breast and prostate cancers, not only has CRC screening reduced mortality from colon cancer and detected early CRC, it has also decreased the incidence of CRC through detection and removal of pre-cancerous l

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the prenatal ultrasound features of fetal ductal-dependent congenital heart disease (DDCHD), analyze their association with chromosomal abnormalities, and summarize clinical outcomes.
METHOD: A retrospective analysis was conducted on the clinical and ultrasound data of 308 fetuses diagnosed with DDCHD at our center over the past 10 years. The ultrasound characteristics of each DDCHD type during early pregnancy were systematically summarized. Differences in the prevalence of abnormalities and pregnancy outcomes among various DDCHD types were statistically compared.

All pregnant women in Denmark are offered a first-trimester ultrasound screening examination between 11 and 14 weeks of gestation. Additionally, women are offered a risk assessment for foetal chromosomal abnormalities. The main results in this review are that more than 90% of pregnant women attend the first-trimester screening, and of those, 5% receive a high-risk screening result for trisomy 21. The first-trimester screening detects more than 90% of trisomy 21 cases and a large proportion of severe structural malformations. The Danish Fetal Medicine Database (DFMD) was established in 2008-201

OBJECTIVE: Nuchal translucency (NT) has been the mainstay of the first-trimester screening assessment for fetal aneuploidies. Although NT is typically measured between 11 and 14 weeks' gestation when fetal crown-rump length (CRL) is between 45 and 85 mm, recent studies suggest that fetuses with increased NT measured in the early first trimester of pregnancy are also at high risk of aneuploidy, genetic disorders or adverse pregnancy outcomes. The aim of this systematic review was to report the outcomes of fetuses with early increased NT before 11 weeks' gestation.
METHODS: MEDLINE, EMBASE and

Background: KBG syndrome is a multisystem developmental disorder characterized by macrodontia of the upper permanent incisors, distinctive facial features, a short stature, developmental delay, variable intellectual disability, and behavioral issues. Heterozygous chromosomal deletion encompassing the partial or entire ANKRD11 gene, as well as the loss of function mutations, result in haploinsufficiency of the gene, leading to KBG syndrome. This indicates that precise levels of ANKRD11 transcripts or protein are essential for human development. Clinical report: Here, we report three individuals

BACKGROUND: Turner syndrome (TS), a chromosomal disorder affecting females, is commonly associated with short stature due to haploinsufficiency of the SHOX gene. Recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) and estrogen replacement therapy (ERT) are standard treatments to improve height and induce puberty. However, the impact of chromosomal mosaicism and other clinical variables on long-term growth outcomes remains controversial, particularly in Asian populations.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the influence of karyotype and other clinical predictors on growth velocity and final adult height in Taiwanese
