Prevalence and determinants of cervical cancer screening among women aged 30-49 years in Nigeria: A population-based cross-sectional study.

Cervical cancer poses a major global health challenge, particularly impacting women.Although largely preventable through regular screening, uptake remains suboptimal in Nigeria due to multiple access barriers. Guided by Andersen's Behavioural Model of Health Services Use - which posits that health service utilisation is influenced by predisposing, enabling, and need factors - this study assessed the prevalence and determinants of cervical cancer screening among women aged 30-49 years in Nigeria. We analysed secondary data from the 2023-24 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey, including a weig

Ensitrelvir for Covid-19 Postexposure Prophylaxis in Household Contacts.

BACKGROUND: Ensitrelvir, an oral inhibitor of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) 3C-like protease, is approved in Japan for the treatment of mild-to-moderate coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19). Previously, no antiviral agents were approved for postexposure prophylaxis in household contacts of patients with Covid-19. METHODS: In this double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial, we randomly assigned persons who were SARS-CoV-2-negative on local diagnostic testing but were household contacts of a patient with Covid-19 (the index patient) to receive either ensitr

Urinary Volatile Organic Compound Metabolites Are Associated With MASLD/MASH in Humans and Induce Steatosis in Liver Organoids.

BACKGROUND: Volatile organic compound (VOC) exposure is an environmental health concern and could, through the liver exposome, be associated with metabolic dysfunction associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) progression. METHODS: We analysed NHANES 2017-2020, a U.S. population-based cohort with controlled attenuation parameter (CAP), liver stiffness measurement (LSM) and urinary VOC metabolites. Participants with viral hepatitis, excess alcohol use or missing urine creatinine were excluded. MASLD was defined as CAP ≥ 275 dB/m with metabolic dysfunction, at-risk MASH as FAST ≥ 0.35 and incr

Peer-assisted telemedicine for hepatitis C intervention in people experiencing housing instability.

BACKGROUND: The rate of hepatitis C virus (HCV) treatment initiation and cure is suboptimal among people experiencing homelessness. A recent randomized controlled trial conducted by our study team compared peer-assisted telemedicine for HCV (TeleHCV) to peer-assisted referral to local providers (enhanced usual care [EUC]) in a rural population in Oregon. We hypothesized that the TeleHCV treatment model is more effective than EUC among those with unstable housing. METHODS: In this secondary analysis of the Oregon TeleHCV randomized controlled trial in adults with HCV and injection drug use (n

Substance Use and HIV Risk Among African Refugee and Migrant Sex Workers in Italy: A Mixed-Methods Study Informed by Syndemic Theory.

Substance use is a recognized driver of HIV vulnerability among sex workers, yet little is known about how behavioral patterns intersect with structural exclusion for African male and gender-diverse refugee and migrant sex workers in Italy. Informed by syndemic theory, we conducted a sequential mixed-methods study in partnership with a community-based organization in Northern Italy. The qualitative strand included 20 in-depth interviews and two focus group discussions exploring experiences of substance use, stigma, and healthcare engagement. The quantitative strand comprised a structured surve

Serological Surveillance of Avian Influenza Virus Exposure Using Paired Sera Among Occupational Contacts in Taiwan, January-September 2025.

In 2025, Taiwan implemented paired sera surveillance among occupational contacts of avian influenza viruses (AIVs). Of 122 contacts analyzed, 117 (95.9%) remained asymptomatic with high personal protective equipment compliance (91.8%). No seroconversion was detected against AIV A(H5N2) clade 2.3.4.4b. These findings suggest a low risk of human infection despite persistent poultry outbreaks, provide timely serological evidence during the ongoing outbreak, and demonstrate the effectiveness of Taiwan's integrated human-animal surveillance in early risk characterization.

Impact of anthropogenic activities on the ecosystem and emergence of bat-borne zoonotic diseases.

About 70 % of zoonotic infectious diseases originate from wildlife reservoirs, particularly bats, primates, and rodents. Bats comprise about 20 % of all known mammal species worldwide and have been identified as reservoir and carrier hosts of various viral disease outbreaks. They also play a crucial role in viral adaptation and evolution. Given this inherent risk, this review focuses on how anthropogenic activities (habitat destruction, agricultural intensification, bushmeat hunting, and occupational exposure) and climate change are increasing the frequency and intensity of bat-human contact.

Duration of Initial Viremia Modulates Functional Properties of HIV-specific T Cell Receptors.

Virus-specific CD8+ T cells are crucial in controlling chronic human viral infections such as HIV-1, but the effect of persistent antigen exposure on T cell repertoire formation is not well understood. In this study, we examined epitope-specific CD8+ T cell repertoires in people living with HIV-1, where duration of viremia following hyperacute infection was modulated by the time of initiation of continuous suppressive antiretroviral therapy (ART). After ART-induced undetectable viremia in persons expressing the same HLA class I allele, we analyzed the impact of early (n=6) versus delayed (n=6)

National Prevalence and Risk Factors of Hepatitis B Virus Infection in Tunisia Two Decades After Vaccine Introduction.

Background/Objectives: Tunisia lacks recent national data on hepatitis B virus (HBV) prevalence, particularly following the introduction of universal HBV vaccination in 1995. A national HBV seroprevalence study is essential to guide prevention strategies. This study aimed to estimate the national seroprevalence of HBV infection and identify its determinants 20 years after vaccine introduction. Methods: We conducted a nationwide, household-based, cross-sectional sero-epidemiological survey among a representative sample of the Tunisian general population using a two-stage cluster sampling method

In vitro safety assessment, titanium migration analysis, and functional properties of chitosan-alginate bio-nanocomposite films with bay leaf extract and TiO₂ for sustainable chicken packaging.

The development of sustainable bio-nanocomposite packaging materials has become essential to address environmental concerns while ensuring food safety. This study developed chitosan-alginate bio-nanocomposite films incorporating TiO₂ nanoparticles and bay leaf two-phased equilibrium condensate for chicken packaging. These natural polysaccharides were selected as biopolymer matrix due to their excellent film-forming properties, biodegradability, and antimicrobial characteristics. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed both anatase (90%) and rutile (10%) phases of TiO₂ nanoparticles with sizes ran

Surveillance, violence, and assistance: Distinct typologies of police contact and prospective health outcomes among people who use drugs.

Policing is increasingly understood as a structural determinant of health, yet the social epidemiology of police contact remains limited by limitations to variable-centered measurement which may not capture the complexity of exposure. We aim to address this gap in a cohort of people who use drugs, a population facing disproportionate and consequential police contact, using person-centered methods to examine qualitatively distinct exposure profiles. We applied latent class analysis to 11 police contact indicators among a longitudinal cohort of people who use drugs in Baltimore, Maryland (N = 48

Clinical presentation, transmissibility, and virulence of mpox clades in Africa: a systematic review (2023-2025) : Exploring clinical presentation, transmissibility, and virulence of mpox based on clades.

BACKGROUND: Mpox is caused by mpox virus and comprises distinct clades with differing clinical and epidemiologic profiles. Clade I (Ia, Ib) predominates in Central Africa, and clade IIb drove the 2022-2023 global outbreak. This review assessed clinical presentation, transmissibility, and virulence of mpox in African settings by viral clade. METHODS: Searches of PubMed/MEDLINE, PubMed Central, Scopus, Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar identified studies from January 2023 to May 2025. Titles and abstracts were screened in Rayyan by two reviewers, with conflicts resolved by a third. Literatur

Series 1: Behind the Spread: A Scoping Review of Risk Factors for Exposure to Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major global health challenge, with transmission influenced by the incidence of contagious people with TB, the duration of infectivity, and the probability of contact with susceptible individuals. This review synthesizes recent evidence on established and emerging risk factors influencing TB transmission, particularly in light of global trends such as migration, urbanization, and demographic shifts, to guide future prevention and control strategies. This scoping review maps and synthesizes evidence from systematic reviews on risk factors for Mycobacteriu

Novel Genetic Locus Associated with Resistance to M. tuberculosis Infection: A Multi-Ancestry Genome-Wide Association Study.

Understanding host susceptibility to Mycobacterium tuberculosis ( Mtb) is critical for the development of new vaccines. Certain individuals "resist" becoming infected with Mtb despite intensive exposure; however, it is unknown whether there is a genetic basis for "resistance" to Mtb infection across populations. Here we conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of resistance to Mtb infection by carefully characterizing exposure to TB patients among 4,058 close contacts in India, Brazil, and South Africa. 476 (12%) "resisters" remained free of Mtb infection despite substantial exposure t

Missed Opportunities in Tuberculosis (TB) Prevention in Pediatric Population: A Retrospective Observational Study From North India.

Background Contact investigation, particularly Household contact tracing (HHC), is a cornerstone of tuberculosis (TB) control programs globally. However, the implementation of contact tracing and TB preventive treatment (TPT) in India remains suboptimal, especially in the pediatric age group. This study aimed to determine the missed opportunities of disease identification and prevention among pediatric TB cases with a documented history of household exposure to a TB index case. Primary objective To determine the proportion of microbiologically confirmed pediatric TB cases with documented house

Pulmonary versus extrapulmonary tuberculosis among diagnosed tuberculosis cases in Bangladesh: Evidence from a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis remains one of the primary infectious diseases in Bangladesh that affects both adults and children. Poor diagnostic criteria and insufficient reporting, especially of pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) and extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) in children, limit the prevalence estimation, resulting in insufficient preventive strategies. This systematic review and meta-analysis aim to estimate the pooled proportions of PTB and EPTB among pediatric and adult diagnosed tuberculosis cases in Bangladesh, and to summarize the associated factors. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Scopus,

Series 2: Invisible Threats: A Global Scoping Review of Risk Factors for Tuberculosis Infection.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a major global health challenge, with Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tuberculosis) causing significant morbidity and mortality mainly in high-burden countries. Following exposure to M. tuberculosis, individuals may become infected, developing TB infection (TBI) through inhalation of the bacillus: this affects approximately one-fourth of the global population and serves as a critical reservoir for potential disease reactivation and transmission. The risk of being infected with M. tuberculosis is shaped by bacterial load of people with TB, contact patterns,

Improving Bovine Tuberculosis Surveillance Through Risk-Based Prioritization of Slaughterhouse-Triggered Trace-Back Investigations.

Slaughterhouse detection of lesions compatible with bovine tuberculosis represents a key passive surveillance component in Santa Catarina, Brazil, yet subsequent trace-back investigations often fail to identify infected farms. This study developed a quantitative framework to prioritize epidemiological investigations by estimating the probability of infection associated with each farm connected to PCR-confirmed cases. Using official movement records and historical diagnostic data, we reconstructed the lifetime contact networks of slaughtered cattle presenting confirmed Mycobacterium bovis lesio
