Oil-Coated Nanoplastics Induce Rapid Membrane Disruption and Severe Intestinal Injury.

Plastic food containers used in food delivery may pose underrecognized health risks by releasing micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs), especially when in contact with oil-rich foods. Here, we show that cooking oil dramatically increased MNP release from polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE)-coated containers within 3 min of microwave heating, reaching up to 1.52 × 1014 particles/L, approximately 125-fold higher than with water. Concurrently, the co-release of plastic additives and heavy metals increased by up to 309-fold. Soybean oil-derived PP nanoplastics were four times more cytotoxic (IC50 =

Sporogonic development of Hepatozoon felis in naturally infected Rhipicephalus turanicus and Rhipicephalus rutilus ticks and induction of sporocyst excystation by duodenal fluid.

Hepatozoon felis is a protozoan parasite reported in Europe, Africa, Asia and the Americas with infection rates ranging from 4 % to 30 % in domestic cats in Mediterranean countries. Although the parasite was described in 1908, its arthropod vector has not been reported to date. Ticks removed from cats were dissected to prepare hemocoel smears with the aim of identifying the sporogonic life stages of H. felis. Light and live video microscopy were used to visualize these stages and PCR followed by DNA sequencing served to verify the Hepatozoon sp. found and to morphologically and molecularly def

[One case of occupational pulmonary anthrax].

Pulmonary anthrax is an acute zoonotic infectious disease caused by Bacillus anthracis infecting the human body. Humans can be infected by coming into contact with diseased animals and their products or by consuming diseased animals. According to the different infection routes, it can be classified into cutaneous anthrax, pulmonary anthrax and intestinal anthrax, etc. Among them, cutaneous anthrax is the most common, while case reports of pulmonary anthrax are rare. This article analyzes the clinical data of a case of occupational pulmonary anthrax diagnosed by metagenomic next-generation sequ

From Bacterial Diversity to Zoonotic Risk: Characterization of Snake-Associated Salmonella Isolated in Poland with a Focus on Rare O-Ag of LPS, Antimicrobial Resistance and Survival in Human Serum.

The One Health approach emphasizes the importance of zoonoses due to their pandemic potential, highlighting the need to characterize emerging bacterial pathogens across animal reservoirs. Non-typhoidal Salmonella (NTS) species are among the most common zoonotic agents and can be transmitted by various reservoirs, including reptiles. Both direct and indirect contact with reptiles may result in Reptile-Associated Salmonellosis (RAS), which mainly affects children, immunocompromised individuals, pregnant women, and the elderly. This study aimed to isolate and characterize the Gram-negative intest

A Systematic Review of Zoonotic Enteric Parasites in Synanthropic Mammalian Species in Florida.

Florida is home to a vast number of wildlife species that come into close contact with residents and domestic animals. As mammals are competent hosts for many zoonotic diseases, it is important to understand what exposure risks are present for both people and animals. Using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, this review analyzed published literature spanning 1963 through 2023 documenting zoonotic enteric parasites in synanthropic wild mammals of Florida, excluding mice and rats. Between an initial search conducted in 2022 and updated search

Epidemiology and antimicrobial resistance profiles of pathogenic Escherichia coli from commercial swine and poultry abattoirs and farms in South Africa: A One Health approach.

Pathogenic Escherichia coli (PEC) are important foodborne bacteria that can cause severe illness in humans. The PECs thrive within the intestines of humans as well as animals and may contaminate multiple ecosystems, including food and water, via faecal transmission. Abattoir and farm employees are at high risk of PEC exposure, which could translate to community risk through person-to-person contact. To determine the epidemiology and resistome of PECs in Gauteng and Limpopo provinces of South Africa, 198 swine faecal samples, 220 poultry cloacal swabs, 108 human hand swabs, 11 run-off water sam

A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis on Hepatitis E Virus Detection in Farmed Ruminants.

Swine are widely recognized as the main reservoir of zoonotic HEV; however, a growing body of data on the HEV prevalence in farmed ruminants of different species also points to a potential route for HEV transmission through ruminants and ruminant products and by-products. Definite information on the zoonotic potential of ruminants is still absent or unclear, compelling the necessity for increasing knowledge on this. The aim of the current study was to analyze the state-of-the-art in this research topic and provide a summary of HEV detection and characterization in farmed ruminants. A total of

Bacterial contact induces polar plug disintegration to mediate whipworm egg hatching.

The bacterial microbiota promotes the life cycle of the intestine-dwelling whipworm Trichuris by mediating hatching of parasite eggs ingested by the mammalian host. Despite the enormous disease burden associated with Trichuris colonization, the mechanisms underlying this transkingdom interaction have been obscure. Here, we used a multiscale microscopy approach to define the structural events associated with bacteria-mediated hatching of eggs for the murine model parasite Trichuris muris. Through the combination of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and serial block face SEM (SBFSEM), we visual

Inflammatory Response in Caco-2 Cells Stimulated with Anisakis Messengers of Pathogenicity.

Background: Anisakis spp. third-stage larvae (L3) are the causative agents of human zoonosis called anisakiasis. The accidental ingestion of L3 can cause acute and chronic inflammation at the gastric, intestinal, or ectopic levels. Despite its relevance in public health, studies on pathogenetic mechanisms and parasite-human interplay are scarce. The aim of this study was to investigate the human inflammatory response to different Anisakis vehicles of pathogenicity. Methods: Human colorectal adenocarcinoma (Caco-2) cells were exposed to Anisakis L3 (the initial contact with the host), extracell

A One Health Approach to Defining Animal and Human Helminth Exposure Risks in a Tribal Village in Southern India.

The high burden of soil-transmitted helminth infections has been studied in India; however, little data exist on zoonotic helminths, and on animal-associated exposure to soil-transmitted helminths. Our study took place in the Jawadhu Hills, which is a tribal region in Tamil Nadu, India. Using a One Health approach, we included animal and environmental samples and human risk factors to answer questions about the associations among infected household soil, domestic animals, and human risk factors. Helminth eggs were identified by microscopy in animal and soil samples, and a survey about risk fac

Listeriolysin S: A bacteriocin from Listeria monocytogenes that induces membrane permeabilization in a contact-dependent manner.

Listeriolysin S (LLS) is a thiazole/oxazole-modified microcin (TOMM) produced by hypervirulent clones of Listeria monocytogenes LLS targets specific gram-positive bacteria and modulates the host intestinal microbiota composition. To characterize the mechanism of LLS transfer to target bacteria and its bactericidal function, we first investigated its subcellular distribution in LLS-producer bacteria. Using subcellular fractionation assays, transmission electron microscopy, and single-molecule superresolution microscopy, we identified that LLS remains associated with the bacterial cell membrane

Describing universal Strongyloides serologic screening among pediatric intestinal and liver transplant recipients.

BACKGROUND: Strongyloides spp hyperinfections are a worldwide phenomenon that proves fatal for solid organ transplant recipients. Screening protocols to guide prophylaxis management vary institution to institution from universal to epidemiology driven. Our institution initiated a universal screening protocol regardless of travel history and exposure to ensure no cases were missed. METHODS: In this study, we describe the outcomes of three Strongyloides sero-positive children whom underwent intestinal or liver transplantation and the experience of universal screening at a tertiary care county h

Programming of intestinal homeostasis in male rat offspring after maternal exposure to chlorpyrifos and/or to a high fat diet.

Alteration of programming of the intestinal wall maturation may be responsible for non-communicable chronic diseases in adulthood. It may originate from prenatal exposure of mothers to deleterious environmental factors such as pesticides or western diet. This work was undertaken to determine whether disturbances of the digestive tract function and of innate immunity of offspring at adulthood could be due to maternal exposure to a pesticide, chlorpyrifos (CPF) and a High Fat Diet (HFD) starting 4 months before gestation and lasting until weaning of offspring. Fifty-one male Wistar rats coming f

Mucosal Dendritic Cell Subsets Control HIV-1's Viral Fitness.

Dendritic cell (DC) subsets are abundantly present in genital and intestinal mucosal tissue and are among the first innate immune cells that encounter human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) after sexual contact. Although DCs have specific characteristics that greatly enhance HIV-1 transmission, it is becoming evident that most DC subsets also have virus restriction mechanisms that exert selective pressure on the viruses during sexual transmission. In this review we discuss the current concepts of the immediate events following viral exposure at genital mucosal sites that lead to selection
