Rabies in Ethiopia.

Rabies is one of the most severe infectious diseases in Ethiopia, with many cases of the disease diagnosed in various parts of the country. The dog is the species most responsible for human exposure, with over 98% of the human cases and vaccinations due to the bite of rabid or suspected rabid dogs. Most of the treatments are due to stray dogs that bite, escape and are not available for observation. Most of the people who die of rabies are under 40 years of age, and among adults, the majority of these are males, suggesting that the close contact the young men have with dogs causes them to have

Booster effect of human diploid cell antirabies vaccine in previously treated persons.

Contact was maintained with 27 of 45 persons for four years after their severe exposure to rabies virus and successful protection. During that time, these persons showed no adverse effects of treatment and maintained rabies-neutralizing antibody at the level of 2 to 91 IU/mL of serum. After a single booster inoculation of human diploid cell culture vaccine four years after the initial treatment, levels of neutralizing antibodies rose to 36 to 650 IU/mL of serum ten days after the booster inoculation. These observations confirm the persistence of rabies-specific serum antibodies for an extended

Experimental rabies in skunks: oral, nasal, tracheal and intestinal exposure.

Striped skunks (Mephitis mephitis) were exposed to challenge virus standard rabies virus by feeding infected mouse brain in suspension or as intact brain free choice, by forced feeding of suspension, and by intranasal, intratracheal and intraintestinal instillation of suspension. All of five skunks exposed intranasally, two of five exposed intratracheally and two of ten exposed by forced feeding developed rabies. None of the skunks exposed to challenge virus standard virus, by other methods, became rabid. Most of the survivors, when challenged intramuscularly with street rabies virus at six mo

[Immunogenicity, efficacy and reactogenicity of a human diploid cell strain (HDCS) rabies vaccine in man; recommendations for pre- and post-exposure application (vaccination scheme) (author's transl)].

Since 1973 a total of 365 individuals between 4 and 74 years of age were vaccinated with the HDCS-rabies-vaccine produced by Mérieux/Lyon. Only minor local side reactions were observed in some patients. No adverse systemic reactions due to the vaccine occurred in any of the vaccinees. Seroconversion was observed in 100% of the vaccinated subjects. Neutralizing antibodies could be demonstrated in all 365 vaccinees in titers ranging from 1:10 to 1:2238 (0.35 to 72.5 I.U) employing 200 LD 50 of rabies virus in the mouse neutralization test. The persistence of antibodies has been followed up for 2

Dealing with possible rabies exposure.

When a patient has come in contact with a domestic or wild animal that may be rabid, the physician must decide whether postexposure rabies prophylaxis is warranted. Among the factors that must be weighed are the animal species involved, the epizootiology of rabies, and the circumstances surrounding the exposure.

Antirabies treatment in man in relation to epidemiological conditions: Nordrhein-Westfalen 1972.

By means of a questionnaire, official animal disease reports and complementary interviews, the epidemiological situation was comparied in each district of the Land with the post-exposure treatment as practised by the physicians. A close relationship was found between the occurrence of rabies and the geographical distribution of antirabies treatment. This relationship was mainly due to the fact that the majority of patients received antirabies treatment after rabies had been diagnosed in the animal. In 50% of persons showing no visible lesions at the site of exposure, treatment was not started

The raccoon an emerging rabies host.

The geographic distribution of enzootic rabies in raccoons is currently limited to Florida and Georgia. The enzootic area has steadily expanded northward into Georgia during the 1960's. An epizootic in a population of raccoons closely associated with the human residents of a small, off-shore island was investigated. Forty-seven raccoons from the island were confirmed rabies positive by the State Laboratory from January 22 to May 20, 1969. About 10 percent of the raccoons trapped during the peak of the epizootic were positive and all of these had high titers of virus in their salivary glands bu
