Seroprevalence and risk factors of hepatitis E virus infection in a rural Argentine community: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is a leading cause of acute viral hepatitis worldwide. Rural populations and pig production systems in Argentina may be at increased risk of HEV exposure; however, epidemiological data from these settings remain scarce. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among residents of a rural community. Serum samples from 90 residents were tested for anti-HEV immunoglobulin G. Participants completed structured questionnaires and residential addresses were georeferenced to evaluate exposures and spatial distribution. RESULTS: Rural residents reported greate

Early antibiotic exposure reduces progression-free survival in unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma patients treated with TACE plus TKI and ICI therapy: a propensity score-matched analysis.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: The combination of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) with transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) and tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) has emerged as a promising treatment strategy for unresectable HCC; however, the impact of concurrent antibiotic use on treatment efficacy remains controversial and poorly understood. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of early antibiotic (ATB) exposure on the long-term efficacy of TACE, TKI and ICI therapy in patients with unresectable intermediate-to-advanced HCC. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of patients with he

Biological Rhythms in Coronavirus Pneumonia Pathogenesis.

Night shift work is linked to more severe coronavirus pneumonia, suggesting that host resilience to these pathogens may depend on the timing of exposure. Here, we examined how the time of day influences the severity of coronavirus pneumonia in mice, using mouse hepatitis virus-1 (MHV-1) as a natural infection model. We found that the timing of infection influenced MHV-1 severity, with the highest mortality, peak viral load, and lung inflammation occurring with midday infection, which corresponds to the mid-rest phase in mice and is comparable with nighttime in humans. The time-of-day dependenc

Design and results of a pilot community screening strategy for hepatitis B and hepatitis C to promote early access to treatment among migrant populations from high-prevalence countries residing in Catalonia (MiCatC).

INTRODUCTION: The elimination of hepatitis C virus (HCV) and hepatitis B virus (HBV) requires strategies to overcome barriers associated with access to healthcare among migrants. The objective was to design and implement a community-screening-strategy (MiCat) for HBV and HCV among migrant populations from high-prevalence countries residing in Catalonia. METHODOLOGY: A pilot community-screening was conducted in religious sites, associations or community centres. A multidisciplinary team consisting of peer educators, community health agents, and nurses was established. interventions consisted o

Urinary Volatile Organic Compound Metabolites Are Associated With MASLD/MASH in Humans and Induce Steatosis in Liver Organoids.

BACKGROUND: Volatile organic compound (VOC) exposure is an environmental health concern and could, through the liver exposome, be associated with metabolic dysfunction associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) progression. METHODS: We analysed NHANES 2017-2020, a U.S. population-based cohort with controlled attenuation parameter (CAP), liver stiffness measurement (LSM) and urinary VOC metabolites. Participants with viral hepatitis, excess alcohol use or missing urine creatinine were excluded. MASLD was defined as CAP ≥ 275 dB/m with metabolic dysfunction, at-risk MASH as FAST ≥ 0.35 and incr

National Prevalence and Risk Factors of Hepatitis B Virus Infection in Tunisia Two Decades After Vaccine Introduction.

Background/Objectives: Tunisia lacks recent national data on hepatitis B virus (HBV) prevalence, particularly following the introduction of universal HBV vaccination in 1995. A national HBV seroprevalence study is essential to guide prevention strategies. This study aimed to estimate the national seroprevalence of HBV infection and identify its determinants 20 years after vaccine introduction. Methods: We conducted a nationwide, household-based, cross-sectional sero-epidemiological survey among a representative sample of the Tunisian general population using a two-stage cluster sampling method

Breaking the serologic rule: chronic hepatitis B with simultaneous HBsAg and anti-HBs positivity-a case report.

BACKGROUND: Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection continues to pose a significant global disease burden, because of its potential progression to liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Worldwide, more than 250 million individuals are estimated to be living with chronic HBV infection. Under standard serologic interpretation, the presence of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) signifies ongoing infection, whereas antibodies to hepatitis B surface antigen (anti-HBs) are generally associated with viral clearance or protective immunity. The simultaneous presence of both markers is r

Revisiting the natural history of Jorge Lobo's disease: a mycological enigma spanning unresolved taxonomy, uncertain transmission, and inadequate therapy.

SUMMARYJorge Lobo's disease (JLD) is a chronic cutaneous and subcutaneous mycosis endemic to the Amazon Basin and tropical rainforests of Latin America. Despite more than a century of study, the disease remains underrecognized, poses significant diagnostic challenges, and is often therapeutically refractory. Here, we synthesize historical, clinical, and ecoepidemiological evidence; provide a practical diagnostic approach; and highlight unresolved questions. Clinically, JLD presents as slowly progressive keloid-like nodules and plaques on exposed areas. Diagnosis relies on direct microscopy and

The role of primary care in response to the global liver disease syndemic: a Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology Commission.

Liver disease causes substantial global morbidity and mortality, with a growing burden from steatotic liver disease driven by alcohol use and metabolic dysfunction, alongside persisting challenges from chronic viral hepatitis. Liver disease burden is unequal between and within countries, with high rates in people with low socioeconomic status and marginalised groups due to increased exposure to risk factors and compounded by reduced access to prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. Liver disease frequently coexists with multimorbidity-including diabetes, cancer, and mental illness-with bidirecti

Prevalence and factors associated with hepatitis B vaccine uptake among undergraduate medical students in Tanzania: A cross-sectional study.

BackgroundHepatitis B virus remains a major global public health concern, responsible for significant morbidity and mortality due to complications such as chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. Hepatitis B virus prevalence remains high in many developing countries, including Tanzania, where it is estimated to be 7.17%. Medical students are particularly vulnerable to hepatitis B virus infection because of occupational exposure, including needle-stick injuries and contact with infected blood or body fluids during clinical training. Vaccination is the most effective preventiv

Understanding the Rift Valley fever exposure risk: A comparative perspective from a multi-country study in East and Central Africa, 2021-24.

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is a concern in East and Central Africa, particularly following periods of heavy rainfall and flooding. However no human outbreaks have been reported in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). To assess whether this reflects a true absence of virus circulation, we estimated RVF seroprevalence in Goma (eastern DRC) and examined context-specific risk factors, comparing the findings with data from outbreak-prone countries. A two-year longitudinal study, across six health facilities in DRC, Kenya and Uganda, enrolled febrile subjects aged ≥10 years. Human serum samples

A Newly Established ELISA for the Surveillance of Rift Valley Fever in Dromedary Camels and Their Owners, Kenya 2018.

In 2024 Kenya had a population of 4.78 million camels that contributed to the livelihoods of pastoralist communities in northern Kenya. Previous studies in Kenya, Saudi Arabia and eastern Africa demonstrated high seroprevalence of Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV)-specific antibodies in dromedary camels, as well as sporadic transmission of MERS-CoV from camels to humans. Based on the MERS-CoV data and the very close contact between owners and their camels in northern Kenya, we speculated that camels may also transmit other zoonotic viruses, such as Rift Valley fever virus

Eschars and estate fever: A case series from the Johorean oil palm heartland highlighting the changing face of scrub typhus in Malaysia.

Scrub typhus, a zoonotic bacterial infection caused by the arthropod-borne, Gram-negative, obligate intracellular bacillus Orientia tsutsugamushi and transmitted by larval chiggers, is an underdiagnosed cause of acute undifferentiated febrile illness. Its clinical spectrum ranges from a self-limited denguelike illness to rapidly progressive multiorgan dysfunction driven by smallvessel vasculitis, including pneumonitis, acute kidney injury, hepatitis, encephalitis and circulatory shock. Early recognition is frequently missed because the characteristic eschar may be absent or easily overlooked i

Antiviral Activity of Allyl Isothiocyanate Against Infectious Viruses.

The effects of allyl isothiocyanate (AITC) on enteric viruses, specifically hepatitis A virus (HAV) and murine norovirus (MNV) as a norovirus surrogate, were evaluated at different concentrations, temperatures, and exposure time. AITC at 0.1 and 0.5% was mixed with each virus and incubated at 10, 25, and 37 °C for 2 h or overnight. AITC demonstrated a concentration-, temperature-, and time-dependent antiviral effect, with the lowest concentration resulting in a modest decrease in viral titer. However, at the highest concentration and 37 °C during overnight incubation, reductions of 3.75 log TC
