Cutting Out Stigma: Findings From a Pilot Implementation Trial of a Barbershop-Based HIV Stigma Reduction and Health Promotion Intervention in the Southern United States.

INTRODUCTION: Black Americans and individuals in the Southern United States bear a disproportionate burden of HIV. To address stigma, a key contributor to these inequities, we developed Cutting Out Stigma (COS), a barbershop-based education and multimedia intervention. METHODS: We recruited and trained Tennessee (U.S.) barbers as COS Men's Health Ambassadors and invited them to participate in a 6-month COS pilot implementation trial from September 2024 to March 2025. COS barbers provided sexual health education, referrals to HIV (and other ancillary) services for barbershop clients and shared

HepB-boost: Implementation of free-of-charge health care worker hepatitis B testing and vaccination at Kilifi County Referral Hospital, Kenya.

OBJECTIVES: Health care workers (HCWs) are at high risk of hepatitis B virus (HBV) exposure due to contact with blood and bodily fluids. In Kenya, HCWs are rarely fully vaccinated against HBV. During 2024, Kilifi County Referral Hospital (KCRH) in Kenya implemented HCW HBV testing and vaccination. We assess this implementation, including acceptability, feasibility, and costs. METHODS: A technical working group was formed at KCRH, sensitization was undertaken, and vaccines procured in multi-dose vials. Clinics were run for 2 hours twice weekly over 6 months. Hepatitis B surface antigen testing

Peer-assisted telemedicine for hepatitis C intervention in people experiencing housing instability.

BACKGROUND: The rate of hepatitis C virus (HCV) treatment initiation and cure is suboptimal among people experiencing homelessness. A recent randomized controlled trial conducted by our study team compared peer-assisted telemedicine for HCV (TeleHCV) to peer-assisted referral to local providers (enhanced usual care [EUC]) in a rural population in Oregon. We hypothesized that the TeleHCV treatment model is more effective than EUC among those with unstable housing. METHODS: In this secondary analysis of the Oregon TeleHCV randomized controlled trial in adults with HCV and injection drug use (n

Serological Surveillance of Avian Influenza Virus Exposure Using Paired Sera Among Occupational Contacts in Taiwan, January-September 2025.

In 2025, Taiwan implemented paired sera surveillance among occupational contacts of avian influenza viruses (AIVs). Of 122 contacts analyzed, 117 (95.9%) remained asymptomatic with high personal protective equipment compliance (91.8%). No seroconversion was detected against AIV A(H5N2) clade 2.3.4.4b. These findings suggest a low risk of human infection despite persistent poultry outbreaks, provide timely serological evidence during the ongoing outbreak, and demonstrate the effectiveness of Taiwan's integrated human-animal surveillance in early risk characterization.

Impact of anthropogenic activities on the ecosystem and emergence of bat-borne zoonotic diseases.

About 70 % of zoonotic infectious diseases originate from wildlife reservoirs, particularly bats, primates, and rodents. Bats comprise about 20 % of all known mammal species worldwide and have been identified as reservoir and carrier hosts of various viral disease outbreaks. They also play a crucial role in viral adaptation and evolution. Given this inherent risk, this review focuses on how anthropogenic activities (habitat destruction, agricultural intensification, bushmeat hunting, and occupational exposure) and climate change are increasing the frequency and intensity of bat-human contact.

Duration of effectiveness of tuberculosis preventive treatment across various tuberculosis burden settings: a systematic review and individual-participant meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Millions of individuals at risk of tuberculosis are given tuberculosis preventive treatment (TPT) annually. However, questions remain regarding the duration of protection from TPT and potential variability across populations and settings with disparate tuberculosis risk. We aimed to assess the effect of TPT on time to tuberculosis among close contacts of individuals with tuberculosis and with evidence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection across high-burden, medium-burden, and low-burden settings. METHODS: In this systematic review and individual-participant meta-analysis, we se

Global, regional, and national burden of road injuries 1990-2023: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023.

BACKGROUND: Road injuries are a leading cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide. Years of international efforts have aimed to strengthen policy engagement, including the 2020 UN General Assembly's proclamation of the Second Decade of Action for Road Safety (2021-30), targeting a 50% reduction in road traffic deaths and serious injuries by 2030. The aim of this study is to provide estimates to monitor progress and identify intervention gaps. METHODS: As part of the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2023, we estimated incidence, mortality, and morbidity of road inju

The role of primary care in response to the global liver disease syndemic: a Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology Commission.

Liver disease causes substantial global morbidity and mortality, with a growing burden from steatotic liver disease driven by alcohol use and metabolic dysfunction, alongside persisting challenges from chronic viral hepatitis. Liver disease burden is unequal between and within countries, with high rates in people with low socioeconomic status and marginalised groups due to increased exposure to risk factors and compounded by reduced access to prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. Liver disease frequently coexists with multimorbidity-including diabetes, cancer, and mental illness-with bidirecti

Neurological Events Associated With Acute Dengue Infection.

IMPORTANCE: With increasing global incidence of acute dengue virus (DENV) infection, more accurate estimates of the burden of neurological events following infection are required; however, population-based estimates are lacking. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the risk and excess burden of neurological events in a cohort of DENV-infected adults in the acute postinfectious period vs population-based comparators without DENV infection. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This was a retrospective, population-based cohort study in Singapore. National registries were used to construct a cohort of all adult

Imported Human Rabies - Kentucky and Ohio, 2024.

Human rabies cases are rare in the United States; most result from domestic wildlife exposure. U.S. residents can acquire rabies abroad, typically through contact with dogs in areas where dog-maintained rabies is endemic. In November 2024, a man from Haiti was admitted to a Kentucky hospital with an 8-day history of progressive lower extremity pain and weakness. Soon after admission, he experienced hypersalivation, dysphagia, agitation, and eventually, respiratory failure requiring invasive mechanical ventilation. Ten days after admission, he was transferred to a referral hospital in Ohio, whe

Investigation and response to an outbreak of mpox cases linked to a high-risk group event in Southeast Queensland in May 2024.

OBJECTIVE: The primary aim of this paper is to describe the outbreak investigation and public health response to a cluster of mpox cases that occurred in Southeast Queensland; and to investigate transmission dynamics to inform contact management. BACKGROUND: The transmission of mpox in Australia has continued to circulate among the men who have sex with men community, since the declaration of the global outbreak of clade IIb in 2022. In May 2024, an outbreak investigation was carried out following the admission of an mpox case to a Queensland hospital, which precipitated a response coordinate

Unmet HIV and STI Prevention Needs and Limited Linkage to Care Among Gay, Bisexual, and Other Men Who Have Sex with Men in Southern Spain: A Community-Based Intervention Study.

To evaluate the proportion of gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) with ongoing high-risk sexual practices not engaged in care, and to assess linkage to and retention in care following a community-based intervention. A two-phase study was conducted (January-June 2023) in a sex-on-premises venue in Spain. Community-based screening for HIV and hepatitis C virus (HCV) was offered, followed by a fast-track referral intervention. Individuals with reactive results were linked to specialized care. Individuals with negative results not engaged in care were referred to pre-exposur

Prison-based HIV partner notification in Indonesia: rationale and design of a hybrid type 1 effectiveness-implementation study.

BACKGROUND: With HIV Assisted Partner Notification (APN), individuals with HIV voluntarily name and authorize trained health care workers to inform their at-risk partner of possible exposure to the virus without disclosing the identity of who had named them. Although APN is safe and effective in increasing HIV partner notification and testing, its successful implementation in prison settings to assist incarcerated people with HIV (IPWH) to inform their pre-incarceration partners of possible HIV exposure has yet to be demonstrated. Set in Indonesia where many people with HIV are diagnosed durin

Lenacapavir as pre-exposure prophylaxis for HIV prevention.

RATIONALE: Globally, there are 1.3 million new HIV infections annually, with a disproportionate burden on young women and girls, especially in sub-Saharan Africa (63% of new infections). Despite the demonstrated effectiveness of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), global uptake remains low, reaching only 16.5% of the UNAIDS 2025 target. PrEP adherence is suboptimal in vulnerable populations. There is an urgent need to develop and implement alternative, user-friendly PrEP strategies like long-acting formulations that minimise reliance on daily dosing or frequent injections. Lenacapavir is a first-

Mathematical Model on the optimal control of HIV/AIDS transmission dynamics, incorporating the uninfected class after an effective exposure to the disease.

In this work, we formulated a mathematical model on HIV/AIDS transmission dynamics that incorporates the post-contact control measure. The six important compartments of the model are: Susceptible, under-3-day Exposed, Exposed-Uninfected, Treatment, Pre-AIDS, and AIDS. The next-generation operator approach was used to obtain the effective reproduction number [Formula: see text]. From the stability analysis, it was established that the disease-free equilibrium point of the model is locally asymptotically stable when the reproduction number is less than one [Formula: see text], and that it has a

Testing a Web-Based Parent-Focused HIV Prevention Intervention for Gay and Bisexual Adolescents: Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Among US teenagers, 79% of HIV infections are attributable to male-to-male sexual contact; yet, few interventions have been shown to effectively reduce sexual risk among gay and bisexual adolescents (GBA). Parent communication about sex is associated with adolescent sexual risk, and interventions to improve parent communication have been shown to successfully reduce sexual risk among heterosexual samples. However, no interventions designed specifically for parents of GBA have been tested in clinical trials. Parents and Adolescent Talking About Healthy Sexuality (PATHS) is a web-bas

Asymptomatic Screening for Neisseria gonorrhoeae Among Gay and Bisexual Men Attending Public Sexual Health Services in Australia and Associations With Patterns of Ceftriaxone Consumption: A Retrospective Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Neisseria gonorrhoeae is a significant public health concern due to rising antimicrobial resistance. Current strategies for N gonorrhoeae among gay and bisexual men (GBM) include 3-month screening; however, high-frequency screening may increase ceftriaxone consumption, potentially contributing to antimicrobial resistance. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of GBM screened for N gonorrhoeae at 16 Australian public sexual health services between 2016 and 2023. We classified N gonorrhoeae tests and ceftriaxone prescriptions as screening-related (asymptomatic screening

Dermatophilosis among men who have sex with men, Stockholm, Sweden, March to June, 2026.

Dermatophilus congolensis is traditionally regarded as a zoonotic skin pathogen. Recent European reports suggest possible transmission among men who have sex with men (MSM). We describe four microbiologically confirmed cases in Stockholm, Sweden, in 2026. All occurred in MSM using HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis and without contacts with animals. Infections were probably acquired in Sweden, Japan and Spain. These findings support transmission within sexual networks and suggest that dermatophilosis may be under-recognised in sexual health settings.

Human pulmonary infection by Brucella suis vaccine strain S2 revealed by genome sequencing in China.

Brucellosis the most common zoonosis worldwide. For control and prevention of animal brucellosis, various Brucella vaccines have been developed. Brucella suis S2, a live attenuated vaccine strain proven safe to humans, is widely used in China. In this report, a 77-year-old woman with a history of coughing and expectoration for three years was diagnosed with brucellosis by next-generation sequencing. Subsequently, the Brucella isolate from this patient was determined to be Brucella suis vaccine strain S2 by phage lysis experiments, quantitative real-time PCR, and third-generation sequencing. It
