There is a great need for effective vaccines against the major bacterial enteropathogens. Bacterial enteric infections resulting in diarrhea, dysentery, or enteric fever constitute a huge public health problem, with more than a billion episodes of disease and several million deaths annually in developing countries. Diarrhea caused by a bacterial enteric infection is also the commonest illness experienced by international travellers. Studies of pathogenesis have established the importance of specific ligand-receptor interactions between the enteropathogens and the intestinal epithelium, resulti

Vaccination programmes supported by the WHO and other organizations have dramatically reduced disease in developing countries, but there remains a need to extend coverage rates and expand the number of vaccines included. In industrialized countries, where paediatric vaccination is almost universal, there will be an increasing opportunity to protect against diseases which occur in later years.

The level of immunity to diphtheria and the effect of vaccination with different doses of diphtheria toxoid was investigated. The 457 study children, 6, 10 and 16 years of age, had as infants received routine primary vaccination with three doses of diphtheria-tetanus-toxoid or diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis vaccine, and the 16 year-olds also had received a booster dose of tetanus with a small dose of diphtheria at the age of ten. Prior to the study booster, 15% of the 6-year-olds had antitoxin levels against diphtheria less than 0.01 IU/ml, the given minimum level for protection. Of the 10-year-

Over a 4 month period, the medical records of 255 children with an age range of 6 months to 3 years and who had been admitted to the Cherbourg Hospital Department of Pediatrics were prospectively studied. Ninety-nine % had received BCG vaccination but only 71% had a positive skin test. Ninety-two % were vaccinated against diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough and poliomyelitis and 61% against measles. Seventy-eight % of parents said that they had correctly administered vitamin D, at least up to 18 months of age. Seventy % of children were fed cow's milk during the second half of the first year a

Immunity status to measles, mumps, rubella and type B hepatitis (HB) viruses was studied in a cohort of 83 teen-agers (13-14 years). The vaccination against these agents is optional in Italy. Out of 83 subjects none had been vaccinated against measles, mumps and HB viruses, while 31 had had rubella vaccination. The percentage of seronegative adolescents was 2% for measles, 25% for mumps and 10% for rubella among unvaccinated teen-agers. These data suggest that even adolescent could be a target for rubella and mumps vaccination. On the contrary HBV does not appear to circulate extensively in th

The advance of social and hygienic structures in industrialised countries since the beginning of the 20th century caused a significant change in the spread and pattern of many infectious diseases in these areas. Diphtheria, tetanus and tuberculosis began to disappear assisted in vaccination. The so-called "children's diseases" appeared more and more in later childhood and adolescence. This involved an increase of complications, in the first place neurological disorders. This dramatic change necessitated active immunisation against measles, mumps, rubella and poliomyelitis. The newly recommende

Vaccine coverage, morbidity prevalence, and immunity to measles, rubella, and mumps, were estimated in 1985-1986 among a sample of 2 to 5 years old Galician children, studied through questionnaires and immunoenzymatic determinations of antibodies. According to the mothers, measles vaccine and measles-mumps-rubella vaccine were administered to 22.1% and 45.7%, respectively, of their children, whereas measles were reported in 17.9, mumps in 14.3%, and rubella in 2.9%. The seroconversion to rubella (50.7%) resulted significantly lower (p less than 0.001) than that to measles (75%) or mumps (68.6%

To establish guidelines for the routine use of diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis (DTP) vaccine in preterm infants, we quantitated antibody responses of preterm infants to DTP and determined the nature and extent of side effects. Twenty-five preterm infants were immunized with 0.5 ml DTP vaccine at routine intervals. Term infants served as controls. Immediately before each immunization and 2 months after the third, DTP-specific antibodies were quantitated. Clinical side effects were determined by parental report. After the second immunization, 100% of preterm infants had evidence of specific a

The enveloped RNA viruses are responsible for many important infectious diseases both in the UK and worldwide. The most familiar of these would probably be influenza, measles, mumps, rubella, rabies, dengue and yellow fever. Conventional vaccines against all of the most widespread diseases have been available for several years, although with widely varying degrees of safety and efficacy. Although vaccines against diseases such as measles, rubella, and yellow fever have been fairly successful, all vaccines against diseases caused by this group of viruses still have several drawbacks and are in

The simultaneous administration of B.C.G. vaccine, diphtheria-tetanus toxoid aluminium hydroxide adsorbed vaccine, and oral poliovaccine was studied in 628 children aged 13-14 years between 1966 and 1969 in Newham, London. The efficacy of these vaccines was unaffected by administering them at the same time; routine simultaneous administration is considered justified when organizational difficulties prevent the attainment of high immunization rates with the vaccines given separately. No adverse reactions to B.C.G. or oral poliomyelitis vaccines took place, but 8% of children had moderately seve
