A 56-year-old man underwent distal pancreatectomy, splenectomy, and partial resection of the splenic flexure of the colon because of tumor in the tail of pancreas and the splenic hilus. The patient presented with symptoms of general malaise, anorexia, weight loss, mild diarrhea, and borderline diabetes mellitus, although there was no cholelithiasis. The pig has been considered unsuitable for experimental pancreatic transplantation. In order to develop a model for segmental transplantation, the vascular anatomy was studied in 41 pigs. A morphological analysis of the endocrine pancreas in the normoglycemic sand rat (Psammomys obesus) has been carried out and the immunoreactivity for insulin, glucagon, somatostatin and pancreatic polypeptide (PP) studied. The islets of both parts of the pancreas (pancreatic head and tail) investigated were of the 'mantle' type: centrally located B-cells and A-, D- and PP-cells at the periphery. In the 'glucagon islets' (tail of pancreas) predominated the A-cells, while the PP-cells were more abundant in the "PP-islets' (head of the pancreas).

Fourty-eight patients with malignant disease of pancreas and periampullary region treated by surgery from Jan. 1966 to June 1985 are analyzed. Of these patients, 44 underwent pancreaticoduodenectomy, 2 had resection of the body and tail of pancreas, 1 had total pancreatectomy and 1 had tumor resection only. We report the first case of primary angiosarcoma of the adrenal gland, to our knowledge. A 54-year-old man presented with chronic left upper quadrant abdominal pain, and a left adrenal mass was subsequently found on computed tomography of the abdomen. Accessory spleen (AS) was observed in 19 out of 71 (27%) golden hamsters of APA strain autopsied in the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research. When these AS were examined histologically, clusters of pancreatic tissues, such as islets and acini, were detected in the parenchyma of one AS located in the tail of pancreas of a 15-week-old male animal. This heterotopic pancreatic tissue was considered to penetrate deep into the AS from the pancreas through the adhesion site without any connective tissue border during the ontogenesis.

Seven cases of cystic neoplasms of the pancreas (5 cystadenomata and 2 cystadenocarcinomata) are reported. While cystadenomata were localized in the tail of pancreas, cystadenocarcinomata were localized in the head. Only one case was asymptomatic and evidenced in the course of other type of surgery. A large firm 12.5 cm mass at the tail of pancreas was surgically resected in a 73-year-old white man. The tumor was composed of solid sheets of cells with abundant finely granular eosinophilic cytoplasm. Electron microscopic study revealed tumor cells which were packed with mitochondria, a feature characteristic of the oncocyte. Perineural invasion and direct extension into the parenchyma of the spleen was present, as well as metastasis to a lymph node. There appears not to be a report of a similar case.

Angiography was carried out on 28 patients by which a beta cell tumour was verified in 21. One case was excluded as no final diagnosis was established. Thirty-eight patients have been examined by ultrasound when symptoms or sign suggested the development of a pseudocyst following an attack of proven acute pancreatitis. Pseudocyst was diagnosed in 23 of the 38 cases. Five patients had multilocular cysts, four of which were shown to be communicating.
