It is essential to evaluate the susceptibility of women in the reproductive age group to rubella virus in order to set strategies for the prevention of congenital rubella syndrome (CRS). Turkey began implementing measles-mumps-rubella vaccination as part of the national vaccination schedule for children (12 months, 6 years) and adolescents (14 years) in July, 2006, and there is an ongoing discussion of the need for a policy of vaccinating women of child-bearing age against rubella. The aim of this study was to determine the rubella seroprevalence among women in the reproductive age group in a

In the course of clinical training medical students are in particular exposed to infectious diseases. Therefore, the present study was performed to investigate the immunity status of 223 medical students in their first clinical semester to job-related diseases. Specific serological antibody testing of hepatitis B-virus (HBV), hepatitis C-virus (HCV), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), varicella zoster- (VZV), measles-, mumps-, rubella and polioviruses' type 1, 2 and 3 were performed. The results yielded, that 69.5% of the students had an anti-HBs-level > or =10 IU/l and 54.7% > or =100 IU/l.

The present study was carried out to determine the seroprevalence of IgG antibodies in Bangladeshi children against measles (irrespective of vaccination status), mumps and rubella (MMR) to assess strategic need of combined vaccination for these diseases. A total of 456 children of 1 month to 15 years, were studied. Serum IgG antibodies against MMR were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). By 3 months, protective IgG antibody level (>40 AU for measles and mumps and >15 IU/ml for rubella) for the diseases found to be between 50% and 80% among the studied children. Protective me

The recent decrease in public confidence in the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine has important implications for individuals and public health. This article presents moral arguments relating to conflicts between individual autonomy and collective responsibilities in vaccination decisions with a view to informing and advising health professionals and improving the effectiveness of education policies in avoiding resurgence of endemic measles. Lower population immunity, due to falling uptake, is hastening the need for greater public awareness of the consequences for the population. Vaccination r

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate viral vaccination immunity and booster responses in children treated successfully for acute lymphoblastic leukemia by chemotherapy and to study the response to treatment of antibody-producing plasma cells that are important for persistence of humoral immunity.
METHODS: Forty-three children who were in continuous first remission for a median of 5 years (range: 2-12 years) were studied. Before the leukemia was diagnosed, all children had been immunized against measles, mumps, and rubella according to the Swedish National immunization program. We analyzed levels of serum a

Vaccinations are invaluable in protection from a wide variety of diseases that can cause substantial morbidity and mortality. Although a rare complication of vaccination, autoimmune disorders represent one of these morbidities. Recently, widespread public concern has arisen from case reports suggesting that--similar to what has been observed after natural viral infections--there might be an association between specific immunizations and autoimmune diseases. Herein we address the biological plausibility of such a connection, focusing particularly on the examples of hepatitis B, rubella, and mea

The dictum, 'prevention is better than cure', is applicable to all ailments but it can be most easily followed for infectious diseases, increasing numbers of which are being contained by specific vaccinations since the first discovery of smallpox vaccine by Edward Jenner in 1796. Advances in immunology and laboratory techniques including cell culture, genetic engineering and animal experiments have contributed significantly to the production of more and more vaccines, used successfully in preventive programmes. Infectious diseases are widely prevalent in the developing countries. The child pop

The recommendations for routine childhood immunizations undergo continuous re-evaluation and are periodically amended. As a result of the near complete elimination of wild-type poliomyelitis, the oral poliomyelitis live vaccine (OPV) has been replaced by the inactivated vaccine (IPV) for the primary series in infancy. Recent seroepidemiologic data on the dynamics of decay of maternal measles antibodies in infants may lead to the recommendation of administering the first dose of the measles mumps rubella (MMR) vaccine at twelve months rather than at 15 to 23 months of age. The recently introduc

The hypothesis that MMR vaccines cause autism was first raised by reports of cases in which developmental regression occurred soon after MMR vaccination. A previous study found no evidence to support this hypothesis. It has recently been suggested that MMR vaccine might cause autism, but that the induction interval need not be short. The data from the earlier study were reanalysed to test this second hypothesis. Our results do not support this hypothesis, and provide further evidence against a causal association between MMR vaccination and autism.

BACKGROUND: In trials comparing different formulations of measles vaccine, excess non-specific mortality occurred in female children who received high titer vaccine. These findings suggest a gender-specific effect of measles vaccine.
OBJECTIVES: To determine whether gender differences exist in the rates of adverse reactions and morbidity in the month following immunization with measles-containing vaccine, and to evaluate whether there is a gender-specific association between the humoral immune response to measles vaccination and post-vaccination morbidity.
METHODS: Parents completed question

During a campaign carried out by the Ministry for Social Affairs in Baden-Wuerttemberg to promote vaccination against measles, mumps and rubella (German measles) (MMR), the Juvenile Medical Service at the Public Health Office in Goeppingen carried out a broadly offered vaccination (advisory) programme in the Goeppingen area for 5,800 schoolchildren in their first and second years of secondary education (10-12-year olds) from September to December 1999. Our first aim was to detect in this target group vaccination gaps which could be closed by practising physicians, but our medical service also

In contrast to the 1980s, immunization rates increased dramatically in the United States in the mid-1990s. Three-quarters of all 2-year-olds had received all recommended immunizations in 1997 as compared to just over one-half in 1992. Immunization rates for individual vaccines have reached 90 percent for three of the vaccines--measles, mumps, rubella; pollo; and Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib). The vaccine for diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis, however, and the newer vaccine for hepatitis B have not yet reached 90 percent of 2-year-olds. The rising immunization levels in young children hav

OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the accuracy of parental recall of children's immunization histories as compared with provider records and examined how errors in parental recall correlate with sociodemographic characteristics.
DESIGN: The validation study was part of a population-based household survey designed to assess immunization levels among Texas children under age 2 years. For 72% (n = 3278), interviewers used vaccination records from the parent to copy dates for the diphtheria and tetanus toxoids and pertussis vaccine (DTP), oral polio vaccine (OPV), and measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) shot

Taking into account the global status of polio, it seems evident that the continuing use of oral poliovaccine in all countries is the most obvious and prudent public health policy for the foreseeable future. Possible exceptions might include those countries which are not troubled by the added cost of the inactivated vaccine; whose health services are able to guarantee high levels of vaccine coverage; and which can expect to experience comparatively few importations of wild poliovirus. An important question is whether it is warranted at this time to recommend a combined schedule of inactivated

Measles serum antibody levels were determined by plaque reduction neutralization (PRN) test in 1,075 children in the age bracket of 5 to 17 years who received a single dose of measles-mumps-rubella (MMR II) vaccine at one year of age. Of these, 297 children (28%) had measles PRN titres < 120 which may not be protective against measles infection. The proportion of susceptible children by age ranged from 14 to 35%; however, there was no consistent age-dependent trend in susceptibility rates. The study data indicate the decline in protective immunity occurs before five years of age, and the propo

The likelihood of an epidemic of measles in 1990-92 in Israel prompted us to study the immune status against measles in a random sample of 454 recruits aged 18-19 years in order to obtain data that might be used in determining vaccination policy. This cohort had received one dose of measles vaccine at 12 months of age. The measles immunity status was studied by determination of antibody values that were measured by means of an enzyme-linked immunosorbent (ELISA) IgG antibody test. Of the recruits, 84.6% were found to have positive sera for anti-measles IgG antibodies, while 13.7% had negative

Vaccination programmes supported by the WHO and other organizations have dramatically reduced disease in developing countries, but there remains a need to extend coverage rates and expand the number of vaccines included. In industrialized countries, where paediatric vaccination is almost universal, there will be an increasing opportunity to protect against diseases which occur in later years.
