Immunity status to measles, mumps, rubella and type B hepatitis (HB) viruses was studied in a cohort of 83 teen-agers (13-14 years). The vaccination against these agents is optional in Italy. Out of 83 subjects none had been vaccinated against measles, mumps and HB viruses, while 31 had had rubella vaccination. The percentage of seronegative adolescents was 2% for measles, 25% for mumps and 10% for rubella among unvaccinated teen-agers. These data suggest that even adolescent could be a target for rubella and mumps vaccination. On the contrary HBV does not appear to circulate extensively in th

The advance of social and hygienic structures in industrialised countries since the beginning of the 20th century caused a significant change in the spread and pattern of many infectious diseases in these areas. Diphtheria, tetanus and tuberculosis began to disappear assisted in vaccination. The so-called "children's diseases" appeared more and more in later childhood and adolescence. This involved an increase of complications, in the first place neurological disorders. This dramatic change necessitated active immunisation against measles, mumps, rubella and poliomyelitis. The newly recommende

Vaccine coverage, morbidity prevalence, and immunity to measles, rubella, and mumps, were estimated in 1985-1986 among a sample of 2 to 5 years old Galician children, studied through questionnaires and immunoenzymatic determinations of antibodies. According to the mothers, measles vaccine and measles-mumps-rubella vaccine were administered to 22.1% and 45.7%, respectively, of their children, whereas measles were reported in 17.9, mumps in 14.3%, and rubella in 2.9%. The seroconversion to rubella (50.7%) resulted significantly lower (p less than 0.001) than that to measles (75%) or mumps (68.6%

The enveloped RNA viruses are responsible for many important infectious diseases both in the UK and worldwide. The most familiar of these would probably be influenza, measles, mumps, rubella, rabies, dengue and yellow fever. Conventional vaccines against all of the most widespread diseases have been available for several years, although with widely varying degrees of safety and efficacy. Although vaccines against diseases such as measles, rubella, and yellow fever have been fairly successful, all vaccines against diseases caused by this group of viruses still have several drawbacks and are in
