Surrogate broodstock technology in aquaculture: current applications and future prospects.

Surrogate broodstock development offers a practical route to reproduce species that resist captive breeding, shorten generation time, and conserve valuable genetic resources. We review current methods for isolation and enrichment of primordial germ cells and gonial cells, recipient sterilization options, transplantation routes and stages, cryopreservation practices, and the role of genome editing to create optimized hosts. Evidence from salmonids, cyprinids, and marine teleosts shows that donor germ cells retain genetic identity while the recipient gonadal environment determines gamete type, b

Prediction of oxidative stability in model emulsions for preterm infant formula: A QSAR-inspired framework for homogenization-Interface-oxidation interrelationships.

This study demonstrates the first application of Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationship (QSAR)-inspired computational principles to preterm/low birth weight infant formula emulsion processing optimization. Under combined homogenization-sterilization conditions, elevated homogenization pressure and cycle numbers reduced oil droplet size and increased interfacial protein content, leading to enhanced absolute zeta potential, emulsifying activity, and stability. However, excessive homogenization (e.g., 2-3 cycles under high pressure) triggered droplet aggregation, reduced interfacial protein

Autoclaving Effectively Sterilizes Contaminated Retained Cement in Orthopaedic Surgical Trays.

BACKGROUND: Retained polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) in surgical instrument trays and on instruments is becoming more common and is a disquieting situation for the arthroplasty operating room team. Although retained debris may be sterile after autoclaving, previous studies have not specifically investigated bacterial viability on retained PMMA. This study determined whether heavily contaminated PMMA surfaces and instruments covered in PMMA could be effectively sterilized by clinically utilized autoclaving protocols. METHODS: Mature methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) and Escher

Surgical tray optimization: a prospective and survey-based evaluation of environmental and economic outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Operating rooms are resource-intensive environments. While reusable instruments are more sustainable than disposables, sterilization and reprocessing of unused instruments in the trays generate unnecessary environmental and financial burdens. Surgical tray optimization-removal of rarely used instruments-may reduce these impacts. Current evidence is fragmented, with no standard method to identify unused instruments and limited integration of environmental and cost analyses. METHODS: We prospectively recorded instrument use for the Major General Surgery tray (94 reusable instruments

A novel non-thermal hurdle strategy: Cold stress potentiated cold plasma to control Pseudomonas aeruginosa via integrated oxidative and metabolic disruption.

This study developed a synergistic sterilization strategy combining cold plasma (CP) and cold stress (CS) to control Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa), a major spoilage bacterium in refrigerated foods. The optimized sequence of CS pretreatment (4 °C, 24 h) followed by CP treatment (50 kV, 180 s) achieved 88.90 ± 3.85% sterilization efficiency and induced irreversible cellular damage. The synergistic effect (CSCP24) initiated with CS-induced physiological sensitization, leading to severe membrane disruption (97.92% PI-positive cells), biomolecule leakage, and ultrastructural collapse. This

Steam sterilization: Review of autoclaves, validation, instrument packing, and sterility failures.

Surgical care for the disease is required in a significant number of people worldwide. In India, approximately 4% of the population needs surgical care. In ophthalmology, lens-based surgeries account for a significant contribution to the list. In this massive volume of surgeries, a proper sterilization process is vital for the successful outcome of these surgeries. Healthcare professionals must have an in-depth understanding of the sterilization process, which helps reduce complications and prevent terminal events.

Dual Enhancement of Electrochemical Ozone Production and Chlorine Evolution Reaction over Sulfur-Doped 3D Ni-Sb-SnO2 Electrodes.

Electrochemical ozone production (EOP) and chlorine evolution reaction (CER) are promising green and efficient oxidation technologies for water treatment. However, conventional electrode materials demonstrate limited electrocatalytic activity, hindering their practical application. To address these limitations, this study introduced sulfur into the Ni-Sb-SnO2 (DLS-NATO/TiF) to modulate the electronic structure, constructing a high-performance electrocatalyst for both EOP and CER. The results demonstrated that the DLS-NATO/TiF achieved a Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 50.10% for EOP and 95.70% for

Dean migration mechanisms: facilitating the control of microbial contaminants in cell therapy product manufacturing.

Cell therapy products are rapidly transforming clinical practice, but their short shelf-lives and inability to undergo terminal sterilization create major challenges for sterility testing. Conventional rapid microbiological methods (RMMs) are hindered by the dense cellular background of therapeutic samples, which masks rare microbial contaminants and necessitates pre-analytical processing. Efficient separation of microorganisms from high-density cell suspensions is therefore a critical prerequisite for enabling real-time, in-process sterility assurance. Here, we systematically elucidate the De

Enablers and barriers for using reusable trocars: a qualitative study of surgeons' and residents' perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Operating rooms (ORs) are among the most carbon-intensive areas of healthcare, with minimally invasive surgery (MIS) heavily reliant on disposable instruments. Trocars-essential for MIS and available in disposable and reusable forms-are major contributors to surgical emissions. Yet adoption of reusables remains limited. Effective measures to increase the use of reusables requires understanding the behavioral determinants of instrument choice. This study aimed to identify enablers and barriers to reusable trocar usage. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative interview study guided by t

N, N-Dimethyl-4-Aminopyridine- and Aluminum Isopropoxide-Catalysed Ring-Opening Polymerizations of β-Butyrolactone for the Antimicrobial Oligohydroxybutyrate.

Infectious pathogens pose serious threats to public health, necessitating the development of more antimicrobials. In this study, oligohydroxybutyrates were obtained through the catalyzed polymerization of β-butyrolactone using N, N-dimethyl-4-aminopyridine (DMAP) and aluminum isopropoxide [Al(OiPr)3] and applied as sustainable antimicrobial agents. The poly3-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) oligomers exhibited broad-spectrum antibacterial activities against both Gram-negative (E. coli) and Gram-positive (S. aureus) model bacteria. Additionally, PHB oligomers displayed robust (inhibiting rate: >95%) and r
