Stroke in combined hormonal contraceptive users treated with triptans.

OBJECTIVES: The extent of triptan use among users of combined hormonal contraceptives (CHC) is unknown. Likewise, it is unclear whether triptan use influences the risk of stroke in CHC users. In a Danish population of CHC users, we examined the prevalence of triptan use and assessed its impact on stroke risk. STUDY DESIGN: In this historical cohort study based on registries covering the Danish female population aged 18-49 years 2004-2021 we investigated incidence rate ratios (IRR) and incidence rate differences (IRD) of ischemic (IS) and hemorrhagic (ICH) stroke in users of CHCs who had been

Has the Protective Effect of Hormonal Contraception Been Overestimated? A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Oral Contraceptive Pills and ACL Injury.

BACKGROUND: Hormonal contraception (HC), including oral contraceptive pills (OCPs) and long-acting reversible contraceptives, is widely used by reproductive-aged women for various medical indications. Emerging evidence suggests a possible association between HC use and reduced anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury risk; however, no meta-analysis has systematically evaluated this relationship. PURPOSE: To determine whether HC use reduces the risk of ACL injury in females through a systematic review and meta-analysis. STUDY DESIGN: Meta-analysis; Level of evidence, 3. METHODS: A systematic

Associations of oral contraceptives and hormone replacement therapy with incident dementia risk: a population-based cohort study.

The relationships between exogenous hormones and dementia, as well as cognitive function in females, remains debated. This study aimed to investigate the associations of exogenous hormone exposure (oral contraceptives [OC] and hormone replacement therapy [HRT]) with incident dementia risk, cognitive function and changes in brain structures. Multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression models were used to assess the associations between exogenous hormone exposure and dementia incidence. Linear regression models were employed to explore the relationships of exogenous hormone exposure and cogn

Association of CFRD development among females with CF who use hormonal contraception.

BACKGROUND: Research suggests the effects of combined (containing both estrogen and progestin) hormonal contraception (CHC) can negatively affect insulin sensitivity. This study aims to better understand the associations between hormonal contraceptive (HC) use, prevalence of existing CFRD, and incidence of developing CFRD in females with CF. METHODS: Between January 2021 to April 2022, we recruited females ages 18-45 years with CF from 10 CF centers to complete a retrospective online questionnaire regarding contraceptive use from 2008 to survey completion year. We linked survey responses to t

Association of oral contraceptives with depression symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment in healthy women: A meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Oral contraceptives are a popular choice of contraception globally. OBJECTIVE: The objective was to assess whether oral contraceptive use is associated with diagnosis, treatment, and symptoms of depression in healthy women. DESIGN: Databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, and PsycINFO databases via OvidSP for relevant studies, from database inception to 01 July 2025) were searched for prospective and observational studies comparing users of any currently prescribed oral contraceptives to non-users. Binary outcomes were summarised via relative risks (RR) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CI).

Patterns of contraceptive side-effect variation: Assessing medical and lifestyle factors associated with side-effects among those using hormonal contraception in the United Kingdom.

INTRODUCTION: Contraceptive counselling typically employs a one size fits all approach and little is understood about variation in experiences of contraceptive side-effects and their drivers. This study set out to identify lifestyle and medical factors associated with experiencing side-effects when using hormonal contraception. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a retrospective case-control study among users of four hormonal contraceptive methods (within the past 10 years) in the United Kingdom. We defined cases as those who discontinued a contraceptive method due to side-effects compared to controls

Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis risk across various oral contraceptives: a disproportionality analysis of the FDA adverse event reporting system.

OBJECTIVE: Estrogen-containing oral contraceptives (OCPs) increase the risk of thromboembolic events including cerebral venous sinus thromboses (CVSTs). However, robust pharmacovigilance data comparing CVST risk across OCPs remain limited. STUDY DESIGN: The FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) was used to investigate which OCPs are associated with a disproportionally high CVST reporting. RESULTS: There were 479 reports of CVST across OCPs. Estrogen containing contraceptives were associated with disproportionally high CVST reporting, with ethinyl estradiol + drosperinone exhibiting the

Optimizing women's cardiovascular health across the life course: The role of physical activity in female-specific conditions.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in women, and its development results from both traditional risk factors and female-specific determinants that emerge across the life course. This narrative review explores the role of physical activity in reducing risk associated with five major sex-specific cardiovascular determinants: hormonal contraception, polycystic ovary syndrome, endometriosis, pregnancy complications and menopause. This review synthesized up-to-date studies exploring the associations between these conditions and cardiovascular risk in women, as wel

Hormonal contraceptives and women's sleep health: A systematic review.

Sex hormones and hormonal contraceptives influence the regulation of sleep-wake behavior. However, there are very few large-scale studies to date that have comprehensively evaluated how hormonal contraceptives influence women's sleep health. The purpose of this systematic review was to synthesize the existing research on hormonal contraceptive use and sleep in women ages 18-50. The systematic review was conducted using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) statement checklist. Nineteen studies were included in this review. Data were extracted and evalu

The levonorgestrel intrauterine device and ovarian cancer risk: a population-based study.

OBJECTIVE: There are widespread changes occurring in contraceptive use, with people moving away from oral contraceptive pills and toward intrauterine devices. Considerable data support the risk reduction for ovarian cancer with oral contraceptive use, but there is little evidence on how levonorgestrel intrauterine device use affects ovarian cancer risk. This paper examines ovarian cancer risk in levonorgestrel intrauterine device users in British Columbia, Canada, between 2002 and 2021. METHODS: This research used population-based data from British Columbia to analyze the risk of ovarian canc

Combined Oral Contraceptive Use and Binge Eating.

IMPORTANCE: Previous studies suggest endogenous ovarian hormones significantly increase binge-eating (BE) risk in females. Approximately 85% of women use combined oral contraceptives (COCs) that mimic the riskiest hormonal milieu for BE (ie, elevated estradiol and progesterone postovulation). The effects of COCs on BE risk remain unknown. OBJECTIVE: To examine the associations of COCs with BE. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This population-based longitudinal survey study collected daily reports of COC active vs inactive pill use and BE across 49 consecutive days in women from the Michiga

Ovarian cancer tumor immune profiles associated with intrauterine device and oral contraceptive use.

BACKGROUND: Non-hormonal intrauterine devices (IUDs) create an inflammatory uterine environment while oral contraceptives (OC) suppress ovulation and have different associations with ovarian cancer risk. We have evaluated the associations of these two contraceptive exposures with ovarian tumor immune infiltration. METHODS: This study assessed associations of IUD and OC use with tumor immune features via multiplex immunofluorescence in 24 ovarian tumor tissue microarrays from four case-control and two cohort studies. Multivariable-adjusted beta-binomial models estimated the odds of tumor T cel

Association between combined oral contraceptive pills and depression in women with polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (formerly polycystic ovary syndrome): a comparative cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of depression among women with polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS), formerly polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), is high. Combined oral contraceptives (COCs) are widely recommended for the treatment of women with PMOS, potentially reducing stress related to managing PMOS symptoms and improving body image. However, concerns exist regarding a potential association between COC use and depression. Given these conflicting effects, the present study aimed to evaluate the relationship of COCs on depression and its associated factors in Thai women with PMOS, compar

Effect of Hormonal Contraceptives on Circulating Biomarkers of Inflammation, Chemotaxis, Angiogenesis, and Vascular Stress.

Hormonal contraceptive (HC) use is known to be associated with elevated CRP levels. However, evidence on the effect of HC on several circulating inflammatory biomarkers in healthy humans is limited. The aim of this study was to examine the association between hormonal contraceptives and circulating biomarker levels and differential cell counts. A cross-sectional observational study design with biomarker measurements from 4,160 healthy females was used, coupled with registered HC prescriptions. We compared 752 high and low dose combined oral contraceptive (COC) users, 77 progestin-only pill use

Differential effects of oral contraceptives on lymph node metastasis in breast cancer: role of tumor size as an effect modifier.

OBJECTIVE: Lymph node metastasis (LNM) is a critical determinant of breast cancer prognosis. While oral contraceptives (OC) are associated with breast cancer risk, their relationship with LNM-particularly in understudied populations like Morocco-remains unclear. This study investigates whether tumor size modifies OC-LNM associations in Moroccan patients. METHODS: We analyzed 356 breast cancer cases from Morocco's National Institute of Oncology(2009). Adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for OC-LNM associations were estimated using multivariable logistic regression, st
