We constructed a cDNA library for the beetle, Tribolium castaneum. This library was screened using a cloned amylase gene from Drosophila melanogaster as a molecular probe. By using cholera toxin B subunit and its antibody, the deposition of GM1-ganglioside in the cerebral cortex and peripheral nerves including Meissner and Auerbach's plexuses in the intestine and other visceral nerves of generalized GM1-gangliosidosis was demonstrated. The GM1-ganglioside was found in the swollen neurons of cerebral cortex and ganglion cells of the peripheral nerves. Electron microscopically, parts of membranous cytoplasmic bodies, and amorphous substances among them, revealed a positive reaction for the cholera toxin staining.

We reviewed the renal pathology in 10 cases of renal Fanconi syndrome. Five cases showed the Armanni-Ebstein lesion, i.e., clear glycogen-filled cells limited to the pars recta of the proximal tubules. The 5 cases included 2 siblings with a unique syndrome characterized by death in infancy, severe Fanconi syndrome, severe rickets, carnitine deficiency, and atrophy of the exocrine pancreas. Little is known of the blood sugar regulation in the camel and the morphology and function of its endocrine pancreas. The present paper describes the light microscopic structure and hormone content of the endocrine pancreas of the one-humped camel. Parts of the amino acid sequences of horse and dromedary pancreatic ribonuclease were reinvestigated. The sequence of residues 21-25 in horse ribonuclease is Ser-Asn-Pro-Thr-Tyr or Ser-Asn-Ser-Thr-Tyr. The asparagine in the latter sequence is glycosylated. Horse ribonuclease possesses four additional amino acid residues at the C-terminus, like a number of other ribonucleases. Position 39 in horse and dromedary ribonuclease is not deleted but is occupied by tryptophan.

The present study was designed to examine ileal D cell function. The influence of perfusate calcium, potassium, arginine, and glucose on release of somatostatin (SS) was measured using an isolated, perfused dog ileum preparation. An ultrastructural and light microscopic study was undertaken to examine the nerves of the accessory pancreatic ducts of the starling (Sturnus vulgaris), previously noted (Vinnicombe, 1982) to have a particularly dense innervation. TRH inhibits gastric secretion, gastric motility, and pancreatic enzyme secretion in man. We measured TRH immunoreactivity (TRH-IR) in mucosal and transmural biopsies from different parts of the stomach, pylorus, duodenum, and pancreas in patients undergoing surgery or gastroscopy.
