Histopathology of the Mucosa of Eustachian Tube Orifice at the Middle Ear in Chronic Otitis Media With Effusion: Possible Insight Into Tuboplasty Failure.

INTRODUCTION: Balloon dilation of the cartilaginous segment of the Eustachian tube has emerged as a means to directly augment tubal dilatory function, and this has been applied as a potential treatment for otitis media with effusion (OME). Although results of clinical studies involving this modality appear promising, there are still a moderate number of ears affected by OME that do not respond. The purpose of this study was to investigate the status of mucosa of the Eustachian tube at the middle ear orifice in OME as it may relate to some cases of tuboplasty failure. METHODS: Twenty-three tem

Eustachian Tube Balloon Dilation: Emerging Practice Patterns for a Novel Procedure.

OBJECTIVES: To review the role of eustachian tube balloon dilation (ETBD) in the setting of chronic Eustachian tube dysfunction (ETD) and ascertain how ETBD is currently being used in practice today. METHODS: An online survey included 20 questions designed by 3 investigators to examine how otolaryngologists utilize ETBD in the management of ETD. The survey was distributed to the members of the American Rhinologic Society (ARS), American Otological Society (AOS), and American Neurotology Society (ANS) in their respective annual electronic mailings in April and May of 2017. RESULTS: A total of

Cartilaginous Eustachian tube length and carotid canal dehiscence in children: a radiological study.

PURPOSE: The use of Balloon Eustachian tuboplasty (BET) for Eustachian tube dysfunction is increasing in adults but to a lesser extent in children. Despite growing experience, concerns remain that BET could theoretically cause carotid artery rupture, which may be more likely if there is carotid canal dehiscence adjacent to the bony Eustachian tube. This radiological study aims to assess the prevalence of carotid canal dehiscence and length of cartilaginous Eustachian tube in children. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 75 consecutive computed tomography scans of the petrous temporal bones performed in ch

In Vivo Measurement of Middle Ear Pressure Changes during Balloon Eustachian Tuboplasty.

BACKGROUND: Balloon Eustachian tuboplasty (BET) is known as a treatment for chronic obstructive Eustachian tube dysfunction (OETD). The precise mechanism of action is not fully understood. Observations in sheep cadavers and human cadavers have shown specific middle ear pressure changes related to BET. METHODS: In this prospective study using a microfibre optical pressure sensor, pressure changes during BET were for the first time monitored transtympanically in five normal human middle ears in vivo. RESULTS: Middle ear pressure changes during 21 BETs consisted of five stages (insertion, infla

[Otitis media: definition, pathogenesis, clinical presentation, diagnosis and therapy].

A number of diseases of the middle ear are summed up under the term otitis media: acute otitis media, recurrent acute otitis media, otitis media with effusion, chronic suppurative otitis media and chronic otitis media epitympanalis (= cholesteatoma). Acute otitis media belongs to the most common pediatric diseases and is often caused by bacterial infection. Since the advent of pneumococcal vaccines the quantity of AOM caused by pneumococci has declined; vaccination against NTHi and Moraxella catarrhalis are being developed. Main pillar of conservative treatment of AOM is symptomatic therapy of

Laparoscopic ureteroureterostomy for treatment of retrocaval ureter.

INTRODUCTION: Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) remain a public health concern, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Despite the availability of nationally representative data, evidence on self-reported STIs (SR-STIs) among men in India remains limited. This study examines the prevalence of SR-STI symptoms and associated factors among sexually active men in India. DATA AND METHODS: The data used in this study were drawn from the National Family Health Surveys; NFHS-4 (2015-16) and NFHS-5 (2019-21). The analysis included men aged 15-54 years who ever had sexual intercourse (N

Laser Eustachian Tuboplasty for Eustachian Tube Dysfunction: a case series review.

The authors reviewed the literature regarding the safety and efficacy of Laser Eustachian Tuboplasty (LETP) in the treatment of Eustachian tube dysfunction (ETD). Medline via Pubmed, OvidSP and Science Direct were consulted, with a supplementary manual review of citations. English language case series constituted a baseline for inclusion. Primary outcome measures were pre- and post-operative tympanometry, otoscopy findings, subjective symptoms and pure tone audiometry, and findings were stratified into short term (≤6 months) and long term (>6 months-5 years). Eight unique case series were iden

Balloon Eustachian Tuboplasty in children.

Endonasal ballon dilatation of the Eustachian tube (BET) is a promising treatment for Eustachian tube dysfunction with encouraging results over the last years in adults. In addition, in children, single studies demonstrated promising results, but revealed the necessity for broader and additional studies. Our retrospective analysis presents outcomes with BET in children with chronic obstructive dysfunction of the Eustachian tube, showing resistance to the conventional therapy after adenotomy with paracentesis or grommets (ventilation tubes). The data of 52 children, having undergone BET from Ap

Balloon Eustachian tuboplasty treatment of longstanding Eustachian tube dysfunction.

BACKGROUND: Eustachian tube dysfunction is a poorly defined condition associated with various symptoms and it can predispose to middle-ear disease. Balloon dilation Eustachian tuboplasty has been proposed as a treatment for Eustachian tube dysfunction. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the subjective and objective outcomes of balloon dilation Eustachian tuboplasty in patients with recurrent, previously treated chronic Eustachian tube dysfunction. METHODS: The study was conducted on 11 patients (13 ears) who had undergone previous unsuccessful medical and surgical treatment. Tympanometry was the primary

Treatment of pharyngotympanic tube dysfunction.

Eustachian tube dysfuntion intends to describe a variety of signs, symptoms, and physical findings that result from the impairment of ET function. A large variety of methods have been employed to assess ET function in the literature. Due to the lack of high level evidence, it is difficult to draw conclusions on the effectiveness of medical and surgical treatments. There are various medical and surgical interventions available for chronic obstructive ET dysfunction including balloon Eustachian tuboplasty (BET) and laser or microdebrider tuboplasty. Consensus on diagnostic criteria for ETD is re

Patient satisfaction in the long-term effects of Eustachian tube balloon dilation is encouraging.

OBJECT: To investigate the long-term effects of balloon Eustachian tuboplasty (BET) from patient's perspective and to discover which symptoms of Eustachian tube dysfunction (ETD) benefit the most from BET. METHOD: We designed a retrospective postal questionnaire based on the seven-item ETD questionnaire (ETDQ-7). Our questionnaire covered the severity of present ETD symptoms in comparison with the preoperative situation, the severity of current overall ear symptoms, and possible surgical interventions after BET. Forty-six patients treated in our institution between 2011 and 2013 fulfilled the

Cervicofacial and mediastinal emphysema after balloon eustachian tuboplasty (BET): a retrospective multicenter analysis.

PURPOSE: Balloon Eustachian tuboplasty (BET) is a new treatment modality addressing chronic obstructive dysfunction of the Eustachian tube (ET). So far, BET has been deemed a safe procedure under general anesthesia with only minor adverse effects. However, individual cases of postoperative emphysema have been reported. In the present retrospective multicenter analysis we determined the incidence rate of this potentially life threatening complication after BET. METHODS: In total we collected data from 3,670 BET procedures performed on 2,272 patients in four tertiary care ENT departments. RESU
