Screening for abnormal haemoglobins: a pilot study.

A pilot study has been made of the implication of screening for abnormal haemoglobins in immigrant schoolchildren. An abnormality was detected by capillary blood haemoglobin electrophoresis in 8.4% of 6,835 children and a haemoglobinopathy outpatient clinic had to be established to deal with the heavy work load which resulted. The clinic was also used to determine the value of investigating the remaining members of the family once an abnormality had been detected in one child.Healthy siblings with normal haemoglobin electrophoretic patterns and normal iron and folate levels were studied to det

Family with probable achondrogenesis and lipid inclusions in fibroblasts.

Three stillborn sibs, two males and a female, with probable achondrogenesis, whose parents are first cousins, are reported. Fibroblast cultures revealed numerous large intracellular lipid inclusions in the two stillborns, which were available for investigation, and these were found to a lesser degree in the mother. No similar inclusions were detected in cultured amniotic cells from a 16-week pregnancy which eventually terminated in the term birth of a healthy female. The importance of a correct diagnosis and implications for genetic counselling are discussed.

Incidence of -thalassaemia trait among Cypriots in London.

The incidence of beta-thalassaemia trait among Cypriots in London is about 14%, and the birth rate of children with thalassaemia major is 0.6%. The high incidence of the beta-thalassaemia gene among Cypriots suggests the desirability of screening Cypriot school-leavers for thalassaemia trait and following up any incidentally discovered cases with family studies and genetic counselling.

The cytogenetics laboratory in pediatrics.

This discussion has attempted to define the role of the cytogenetics laboratory in pediatrics and to identify the indications for the major techniques employed with emphasis on their usefulness and limitations. When one considers that 1 of 150 to 175 live births has a chromosomal aberration, the need for accurate diagnosis and reliable genetic counselling is apparent. A chromosome analysis should be closely correlated and coordinated with the clinical evaluation of the patient so that meaningful genetic counselling can be undertaken. The combined efforts of the clinician and the cytogenetics l

Creatine phosphokinase in facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy.

Study of the serum creatine kinase levels in young patients with facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy suggests that enzyme assay may be valuable as a screening procedure for assessing the status of relatives of an affected individual who have no previous clinical history, and that consequently it may be of use in genetic counselling.

Chromosome analysis before birth and its value in genetic counselling.

Chromosome analysis of amniotic cell cultures was achieved in 29 out of 30 consecutive patients who were referred for genetic counselling during pregnancy. Amniocentesis was performed without any apparent untoward maternal or fetal complication. The only pregnancy terminated was that of a carrier of X-linked granulomatous disease, in whom the amniotic cells showed that the fetus was male and also had Down's syndrome (trisomy G). Chromosome analysis in the remaining 28 patients showed normal karyotypes. The interval between amniocentesis and a definitive karyotype varied from 7 to 31 (average 1
