BACKGROUND: Clear cell tumors (CCTs) occur as primary neoplasms in a number of anatomic sites. Due to their overlapping morphologic features, these tumors can be challenging for the cytologist, particularly when they present as metastatic lesions.
METHODS: Forty-nine fine-needle aspirations (FNA) of metastatic CCTs from 46 patients (age range, 29-87 years; mean, 64 years) were reviewed retrospectively. In addition to the routine smears and cell block preparations, ancillary studies were performed in selected cases. Clinical and/or histologic follow-up was obtained for all patients.

The clinical and pathological features of acute pancreas allograft rejection and involvement of the graft by posttransplantation lymphoproliferative disorders (PTLD) overlap. OBJECTIVE: In two-phase helical CT, organs are scanned in both the arterial and the parenchymal phase after IV injection of contrast material. The purpose of our study was to evaluate the usefulness of two-phase helical CT for the preoperative localization of pancreatic islet cell tumors.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten patients with 11 surgically proven islet cell tumors were included in the study. Helical CT scans of the pancreas were obtained with 5-mm collimation and overlapping image reconstruction. A brief historic outline of the problem of mucin-producing pancreatic tumors is presented. Oblique projections in celiac and superior mesenteric angiography have been of value in patients with carcinoma arising in various parts of the pancreas. Oblique views allow better perception of the slight and uncertain changes in the pancreatic vessels, which are not discernible on anteroposterior projections because of overlapping with the extrapancreatic vessels and the spine. Anteroposterior and oblique views of both celiac and superior mesenteric arteries are the first, and, therefore, the most essential, step in angiography of lesions of the pancreas.

The effects of recent diagnostic and therapeutic advances were assessed in 65 patients with the Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (ZES). Twenty-seven patients seen between 1955 and 1970 were compared with 38 patients seen between 1971 and 1977. The earlier patients had a higher incidence of virulent ulcer disease (56% vs. 24%), other endocrinopathies (48% vs. 13%), and malignant gastrinoma (44% vs. 25%).
