Predicting the Risk of Proteinuria Based on Blood Plasma Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and Machine Learning Algorithms From Pregnant Women and Newborns.

Proteinuria, defined by an abnormally elevated concentration of proteins in the urine, serves as a critical biomarker for the early detection and diagnosis of preeclampsia. Elevated proteinuria levels adversely affect both maternal and foetal health, increasing the risk of preterm birth and low birth weight. This study focused on the identification of proteinuria in blood samples through Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy as a diagnostic tool for real-time diagnosis. Blood plasma collected during birth was evaluated in four study groups: pregnant controls (n = 12), pregnant women w

Acceptability of Circle of Security-Parenting groups in NHS community perinatal mental health services in England: parent and practitioner perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Perinatal mental health (PMH) difficulties are prevalent and often accompanied by parent-infant relationship difficulties. National Health Service community PMH services (PMHS) support birthing parents (typically mothers) experiencing moderate-to-severe and complex mental health difficulties. While PMHS primarily address maternal mental health, treatment can include interventions targeting parent-infant relationships. The Circle of Security-Parenting (COS-P) programme is widely used within PMHS in England and offers a potential solution to the evidence gaps for interventions that:

Physical activity during pregnancy and gestational weight gain depending on pre-pregnancy body mass index: systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Maternal weight gain during pregnancy is one of the most important outcomes that healthcare professionals have, as excessive weight gain is associated with maternal, foetal, and newborn complications. However, the prevalence of excessive weight gain continues to increase worldwide. The benefits that physical activity could have during pregnancy have been demonstrated in several areas, including adequate control of weight gain, therefore, the objective of this meta-analysis was to examine the impact of physical activity during pregnancy on gestational weight gain. METHODS: Systemati

Beyond benchmarks of IUGC: Rethinking requirements of deep learning method for intrapartum ultrasound biometry from fetal ultrasound videos.

A significant proportion (45%) of maternal deaths, neonatal deaths, and stillbirths occur during the intrapartum phase, particularly prevalent in low- and middle-income countries. Intrapartum biometry plays a crucial role in monitoring labor progress. However, the routine use of ultrasound in resource-limited settings is hindered by a shortage of trained sonographers. To tackle this issue, the Intrapartum Ultrasound Grand Challenge (IUGC), co-hosted with MICCAI 2024, was launched. The IUGC designed a multi-task automatic measurement framework oriented towards clinical applications. This framew

Exercise during pregnancy and infant body mass index during the first year of life: a secondary per-protocol analysis of a randomized clinical trial.

INTRODUCTION: Maternal lifestyle during pregnancy may influence infant growth trajectories. Prenatal exercise improves maternal outcomes, but associations with infant Body Mass Index (BMI) beyond early infancy remain uncertain. The aim was to examine the association between participation in a supervised prenatal exercise program and infant BMI during the first year of life. METHODS: This secondary per-protocol analysis was derived from a randomized clinical trial (NCT04563065) conducted in three public hospitals. Pregnant women were allocated to a supervised exercise program performed through

uFlowAM: an unsupervised framework for detection and visualization of abnormal intracardiac microflow on early-pregnancy fetal cardiac microflow imaging.

BACKGROUND: Congenital heart disease (CHD) is a clinically important fetal anomaly. Early-pregnancy fetal cardiac microflow imaging (FCMI) can show low-velocity intracardiac flow, but brief shunt-related, regurgitant, and outflow-tract disturbances remain difficult to recognize when image quality, fetal position, and gestational age vary across examinations. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate uFlowAM for fetus-level detection and visualization of abnormal intracardiac microflow patterns on early-pregnancy FCMI. METHODS: This multicenter diagnostic accuracy study analyzed 650 early-pregnancy FCMI examina

How to Use Cardiovascular Imaging in Pregnancy.

Cardiovascular imaging plays a central role in the diagnosis, risk stratification, and longitudinal management of cardiovascular disease during pregnancy. Physiological adaptations-including increased blood volume, cardiac output, and chamber remodeling-pose important challenges for image acquisition and interpretation, necessitating a nuanced understanding of normal versus pathological findings. This review provides a practical, cardiology-focused framework for the use of imaging in pregnant patients with suspected or established cardiovascular disease. We emphasize key aspects relevant to ca

Birth interventions and outcomes among first time mothers: A population-based register study in four Nordic countries.

INTRODUCTION: Although the Nordic countries generally report lower caesarean section rates compared with middle- and high-income settings, caesarean section represents only one dimension of obstetric intervention. Limited evidence exists regarding the prevalence of physiological birth across the Nordic region. We aimed to describe and compare cross-country variations in intrapartum intervention rates and birth-related complications among nulliparous women in Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. METHODS: This Nordic observational study used data from the Finnish, Icelandic, Norwegian, and Swe

Dose-response relationship between early pregnancy blood pressure and gestational diabetes mellitus based on propensity score matching: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a common pregnancy complication with substantial short- and long-term consequences for mothers and offspring. Whether modest elevations in blood pressure (BP) during early pregnancy are associated with GDM risk, particularly in a dose-response fashion, remains unclear. We examined the association between early pregnancy BP and GDM in a Chinese community-based cohort using propensity score matching (PSM) and restricted cubic spline (RCS) analyses. METHODS: This retrospective study included 11,338 pregnant women who registered for antenatal care
