The Bentley-100-Autotransfusion System was used in eight cases in the emergency department of St. Francis Hospital of Lynwood. The majority of the patients sustained massive chest trauma and the amount of blood salvaged ranged from 1,600 to 14,000 cc. Although the clotting factors and platelet counts altered greatly during the first postoperative days, they returned to normal within 72 hours. The advantages, disadvantages, and controversial areas in autotransfusion are discussed.

Extensive child health supervision, with emphasis on counseling and anticipatory guidance, was provided for the first three years of life to an experimental series of 47 normal first-born black infants from low-income families living in the environs of Children's Hospital in Washington, D.C. A retrospective investigation of 146 twin births (1% of all births in our obstetric hospital in 15 years) was presented. Compared with a normal control group, the average age of the women with twin pregnancies was higher on the whole and the number of primaparate was lower. Half of the women had an EPH gestosis. Forty-one percent of the births were premature. Perinatal mortality was 9.5% (first twin: 6.4%; second twin: 13.6%). The higher rate of complications accompanying twin pregnancies during the pregnancy itself and during the birth make intensive supervision necessary.

Unconjugated oestrone (Oe1), oestradiol-17beta (Oe2), oestriol (Oe3), progesterone (P) and HPL in plasma were determined by radioimmunoassay and the immunological pregnancy-test in urine was carried out in 70 patients with normal pregnancy or imminent abortion from 4th-20th week of gestation. The labour stencil representing the expected cervimetric progress of normal labour was used in 741 consecutive spontaneous labours to identify high-risk labours which needed oxytocic stimulation. Uterine contractions were stimulated if progress extended two hours past the nomogram, which resulted in shorter labours, fewer instrumental deliveries and caesarean sections, and babies with higher Apgar scores than in those dysfunctional labours which were not stimulated. Much has been written about the need for help for the overworked obstetrician. Two obstetricians delivering over 500 babies annuallay had insufficient time for their gynecology practice. Two nurse-midwives were employed and in the first year they delivered 61 per cent of those patients who delivered vaginally. All normal patients had the privilege of choosing their accoucheur; patients, nurse-midwives, and obstetricians were very well pleased with the team approach.

Infection with the human cytomegalovirus has a teratogenic effect on the fetus during the first trimester of gestation as does rubella. Since unusual dermatoglyphic findings have been observed in infants with congenital rubella infection, the present study was designed to determine whether or not unusual dermatoglyphics occur in patients with cytomegalic inclusion disease of infancy.
