Prediction of retained placenta in holstein dairy cows based on machine learning approaches: Comparative analysis of risk factors and predictive algorithms.

Retained placenta (RP) is a common postpartum disorder in dairy cows that significantly impairs reproductive performance and farm profitability. This study aimed to identify key risk factors and develop a robust machine learning (ML)-based predictive model for RP in Holstein cows using routinely collected farm data. Pearson correlation analysis confirmed no significant multicollinearity (|r| < 0.8) among the retained features. Seven algorithms - Decision Tree (DT), Random Forest (RF), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Multilayer Perceptron (MLP), Gradient Boosting Decision Tree (GBDT), Logistic Re

Conjoined Parasitic Twins (Cephalo-Thoracopagus Parasiticus) in a Free Ranging Northern Bat (Eptesicus nilssonii): A Micro-CT Anatomic and Genetic Survey.

The detailed anatomical situation of male stillborn cephalo-thoracopagus twins in a wild ranging northern bat (Eptesicus nilssonii) is described by means of full body micro-CT scans in high resolution with three-dimensional computational reconstruction. The external anatomy was characterised by supernumerary wings and legs and marked cranial disfiguration. The most striking features of the internal anatomy were the presence of two hearts with different characteristics, three lungs with two tracheas, three kidneys as well as a doubled liver. Vascular aberrations and other organ deformities are

Perinatal outcomes of expectant management versus fetal reduction in triplet pregnancies: A single-center retrospective cohort study in Korea.

INTRODUCTION: We aimed to evaluate perinatal outcomes in triplet pregnancies and compare outcomes between pregnancies managed expectantly and those undergoing fetal reduction. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This retrospective study included triplet pregnancies confirmed by ultrasound at Asan Medical Center between January 2020 and May 2025. Pregnancies were classified into an expectant management group or a fetal reduction group (reduction to twins or a singleton). Maternal characteristics, obstetric complications, and perinatal outcomes were compared. Within the fetal reduction group, outcomes were f

Metabolomic profiling reveals key metabolic pathway alterations in monochorionic diamniotic twins with selective intrauterine growth restriction.

BACKGROUND: Selective intrauterine growth restricted (sIUGR) is a major cause of stillbirth and adverse pregnancy outcomes in monochorionic diamniotic (MCDA) twins. However, the underlying pathophysiologic mechanism of sIUGR remains poorly understood. The study aims to investigate the metabolite perturbations and metabolic mechanisms of sIUGR fetuses through a metabolomics study. METHODS: Umbilical cord blood was collected from 30 pairs of MCDA sIUGR twin fetuses and 11 pairs of MCDA preterm (PT) twins, followed by non-targeted metabolomics using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Data wer

Burden and determinants of stillbirth in a Nigerian Tertiary health facility: a five-year retrospective cohort analysis.

BACKGROUND: Stillbirth rates can reflect the quality of a country's healthcare system for pregnant women. The burden, however, differs across and within countries. Hence, determining the burden and associated factors could provide valuable location-specific insights that could guide interventions. OBJECTIVES: To determine the incidence and correlates of stillbirth in a Nigerian Tertiary health facility. METHODS: This was a retrospective study of women who delivered in the Dalhatu Araf Specialist Hospital, Lafia, Nasarawa State, Nigeria, between 1st January 2016 and 31st December 2020. Data f

The Second Twin: Outcomes and Lessons in a Northern Nigerian Tertiary Hospital.

BACKGROUND: Twin pregnancy is traditionally high risk, and with rising incidence, there is a need for evaluating the outcomes as a marker of the quality of care offered. There is some evidence to suggest that the second twin is at higher risk of adverse fetal outcomes, though several studies, especially in more advanced healthcare settings, have debunked this. There is a need for robust evidence on second twin outcomes in low-resource settings like ours to enable standardization and improved quality of care, which will lead to improved fetal outcomes. The objective of this study is to compare

Prenatal genetic diagnosis and pregnancy outcomes of the surviving co-twin after spontaneous single intrauterine fetal demise.

Spontaneous single intrauterine fetal demise (SSIUFD) in twin pregnancies is a special condition of stillbirth. When SSIUFD occurs, clinical attention understandably shifts to the surviving co‑twin. This study aimed to investigate the genetic profiles and perinatal outcomes of surviving co-twins following SSIUFD. This retrospective study reviewed 88 twin pregnancies complicated by spontaneous SSIUFD that underwent invasive prenatal testing between January 2015 and December 2024. Cases of elective fetal reduction and those with unknown chorionicity were not included. The cohort included 54 dich

Dicephalus Tetrabrachius Parapagus Conjoined Twins: A Case Report from Orotta National Maternity Referral Hospital, Eritrea.

BACKGROUND: Conjoined twins (CT) are exceptionally rare congenital anomalies, with an estimated incidence of 1 in 50,000 to 200,000 births, and they pose substantial diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. When the condition is not identified before labour, the rigid fetal mass may result in absolute mechanical obstruction, frequently leading to severe maternal complications, including uterine rupture. This risk is particularly pronounced in low-resource settings, where delayed presentation and limited access to timely surgical intervention further increase the likelihood of adverse maternal ou

Impact of implementation of twin-specific growth charts on adverse perinatal outcomes in twin pregnancies: an interrupted time series analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Twin pregnancies are associated with higher perinatal mortality and morbidity. The assessment of fetal growth in these pregnancies using singleton or twin charts remains controversial. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of the implementation of twin-specific growth charts on adverse perinatal outcomes in twin pregnancies. METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study of twin pregnancies delivered at St George's University Hospitals (2000-2023). Twin-specific growth charts were implemented in July 2017; 2020 was excluded due to COVID-19-related confounding. Pregnancies

Harnessing Artificial Intelligence to Restore Standards in Medical and Dental Education in Pakistan.

The month of March is dedicated to Colon Cancer Awareness. Worldwide, colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence has been on the rise. It is currently the third most common cancer in men (746,000 cases, 10.0% of the total) and the second in women (614,000 cases, 9.2% of the total).1 Arecent meta-analysis reported a 61% risk reduction in CRC incidence with colonoscopy.2 Unlike screening programs for breast and prostate cancers, not only has CRC screening reduced mortality from colon cancer and detected early CRC, it has also decreased the incidence of CRC through detection and removal of pre-cancerous l

Genetics of twin birth rate in German Holstein and options for breeding.

Twinning in dairy cattle poses substantial risks for both cows and calves, including increased rates of calving difficulties, stillbirths, postpartum complications, and negative effects on calf viability and growth. These challenges lead to substantial economic losses and raise serious concerns for animal health and welfare. Consequently, selecting against twin births in German Holstein cattle could be beneficial. In this study, we analyzed the trait twin birth by estimating variance components and genetic correlations with other traits using population-wide data from German Holstein cattle. B
