Among 56,249 maternities in the Collaborative Perinatal Project, 615 were twin maternities. One of these resulted in stillborn thoracoomphalopagus MZ female twins with multiple cardiovascular, alimentary and other malformations. The case is of further interest in that the mother had a surgically removed brain tumor in childhood and exhibited neurological symptoms and bizarre behavior before and during pregnancy. Drugs and treatments which she received during pregnancy are not known to be teratogenic.

In 4319 infants examined at birth who were without major birth defects those with a "remarkable" pregnancy outcome, i.e., low birth weight (less than 2500 g), long gestation (greater than or equal to 43 weeks), stillborn, or twin status, were more likely to have a minor birth defect than the remainder. With regard to the 2 most frequent defects, simian crease and folded helix, the increase in the former was of about the same order (1.6-2.1 -fold) in those with remarkable outcome of all types, but the increase in the latter was particularly great in twins (approximately 3.1-fold) compared with

Analysis of 16 486 obstetric and neonatal case histories of the years 1963--1972. 30.7% of all neonates of Austrian (A) mothers showed one or more signs of placentar insufficiency. Pronounced prenatal dystrophy (p.d.) occurs in similar numbers in women with or without EPH gestosis, but has other important causes as well. In p.d. excentric umbilical cord insertion is more common than in neonates without dystrophy (56.4 : 52.4). Very young mothers often have neonates with p.d. During the ten year period p.d. increased considerably until 1967. After that it decreased slightly but not to the numbe

Two cases of multiple births were observed in which a twin placenta showed a striking gross and microscopic ischemia of one of its fused components. In both cases death of one or more of the infants occurred. Case 1 was a triplet birth of identical siblings and two of the infants died on the second and third days after birth, respectively. Case 2 was a twin birth in which one of the infants was stillborn. Two other cases are quoted from the literature in which a similar pallor of one-half of the twin placenta was observed, and both these cases were also associated with death of the associated
