Fall prevention education among older hospital inpatients: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Hospitalized older adults are at high risk of falls. Although fall prevention education is recommended in hospital settings, the efficacy of different education programs remains inconsistent. This study aimed to systematically review the effectiveness of fall prevention education interventions among older inpatients. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of randomized or trial-linked evaluations of fall prevention education programs for inpatients aged ≥60 years. A comprehensive search was performed across PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus, and Cochrane Library databases

Investigating the outcomes of pregnancies with atypical results following SNP-based cfDNA screening: a population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Cell-free DNA (cfDNA) screening has transformed prenatal screening by offering superior performance for detecting common aneuploidies, though it occasionally yields nonreportable or uninterpretable results. In 2020, a SNP-based cfDNA platform introduced a new category of nonreportable results termed "atypical," indicating additional or unexpected findings during DNA analysis. The clinical significance of these atypical results remains unclear, leaving clinicians without evidence-based guidance for counseling of pregnant individuals in the context of such results. OBJECTIVES: This

Evidence-based behaviour change techniques to aid smoking cessation for pregnant women with mental illness: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Smoking during pregnancy is the leading preventable cause of maternal and infant morbidity and mortality in high income countries, disproportionately affecting women with mental illness. While behavioural smoking cessation interventions are effective for pregnant women and non-pregnant people with mental illness separately, evidence for specific smoking cessation interventions for pregnant women with mental illness is lacking. This review aimed to identify and map BCTs from effective general mental health smoking cessation trials to determine which may be helpful for pregnant women

Differential impact of migraine on severe maternal morbidity and postpartum readmissions: Insights from a national cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluates severe maternal morbidity (SMM) and hospital readmissions in women with migraine. BACKGROUND: There has been a rising incidence of SMM and growing urgency to monitor SMM as a measure of maternal outcomes. Migraine is the leading cause of disability in reproductive-aged women and is linked to numerous obstetric comorbidities that likely contribute to SMM, rehospitalization, and resulting healthcare costs. However, population-level data examining these outcomes are limited. METHODS: Using the 2019 National Readmissions Database, we performed a retrospective coho

Increased Primary Cesarean Births Among People with Epilepsy: A Population-Based Cohort Study.

OBJECTIVE: Pregnant people with epilepsy are at increased risk of severe maternal morbidity (SMM). Cesarean birth is a known contributor to SMM; however, the factors driving cesarean rates in this population remain poorly understood. We evaluated whether primary cesarean births were increased among nulliparous, term, singleton, vertex (NTSV) live births in people with epilepsy and whether differences were explained by sociodemographic, clinical, or hospital factors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cohort study used linked data from NTSV live births in California from 2007 to 2018. International C

Behavior Change Techniques in Digital Health Interventions for Promoting Adolescent Health Behaviors: Systematic Umbrella Review.

BACKGROUND: Digital health interventions (DHIs) using behavior change techniques (BCTs) show promise in addressing adolescent health behaviors, but evidence of their effectiveness across health behavior domains remains fragmented and poorly summarized. OBJECTIVE: This systematic umbrella review synthesized evidence from existing systematic reviews on the effectiveness of BCTs within DHI targeting key adolescent health behavior domains: alcohol consumption, tobacco use, physical activity, dietary habits, and obesity management. METHODS: We systematically searched PubMed, PsycInfo, Embase, and

A systematic review of mortality and severe morbidities following newborn chest compressions at birth.

AIM: To synthesise evidence for severe short-term outcomes following delivery room (DR) chest compressions (CC) and variation by birth setting, gestation, and level of care. METHODS: Five databases and grey literature were systematically searched to 8 September 2025, for studies reporting mortality or severe morbidity after DR-CC (CRD42024487027). Study selection followed a population-exposure-outcome framework, and risk of bias was assessed using the JBI checklist. The primary outcome was mortality. RESULTS: Twenty-six studies (9,747 CC recipients, 1989-2019) from 16 high-income countries w

Antiemetic Combination Use During the First Trimester and Adverse Circulatory Outcomes in Newborn Infants: A Data-Mining Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Pregnant women sometimes need antiemetic combination therapy to control severe nausea and vomiting during pregnancy. Because promethazine, ondansetron, and metoclopramide have QT-prolonging effects, combination use may potentiate arrhythmic effects in mothers and cause circulatory conditions in infants, with promethazine combinations expected to exert stronger effects than metoclopramide combinations. OBJECTIVE: We implemented tree-based scan statistics to screen for signals of adverse circulatory-related conditions in newborn infants following maternal exposure to promethazine-on

Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy Subtypes and Long-Term Cardiovascular Risk.

IMPORTANCE: Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDPs) are associated with an increased long-term risk of cardiovascular disease, but the risks across different HDP subtypes, particularly those other than preeclampsia, remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether the risk and distribution of specific cardiovascular outcomes differ across HDP subtypes. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This nationwide cohort study retrospectively analyzed women with deliveries in South Korea from 2010 to 2018 using the National Health Insurance Service database. HDPs were classified into 5 subtypes: chronic

A Multi-Institutional Retrospective Study of 21 Dogs Having Undergone Hypofractionated Radiotherapy for Adrenal Tumours (2017-2024).

Radiation therapy (RT) has emerged as a promising non-surgical approach for treating canine adrenal tumours. This multi-institutional, retrospective study describes clinical outcomes for 21 dogs having been prescribed a course of hypofractionated image-guided intensity-modulated RT (IMRT) entailing delivery of 25-35 Gy total in 5 fractions given over 5-15 days for an adrenal tumour. Diagnoses were based on imaging (abdominal ultrasound or computed tomography) and biochemical testing. All dogs had unilateral or bilateral irregular adrenal masses with evidence of vessel compression or invasion.

Impact of Non-Tobacco Nicotine Products on Postoperative Outcomes in Soft Tissue Hand Surgery.

PURPOSE: Use of non-tobacco nicotine products (NTNP), including e-cigarettes, nicotine pouches, and oral nicotine devices, has risen sharply, yet their impact on postoperative outcomes across elective soft tissue hand surgeries remains poorly defined. Although nicotine from combustible tobacco impairs wound healing, whether NTNP exposure confers similar risk is unknown. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between preoperative NTNP use and postoperative complication rates following elective soft tissue hand surgery. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study using the TriNetX

Veterans Hospitals vs Non-Veterans Centers in the Prevention of Limb Loss.

IMPORTANCE: US veterans remain an at-risk population for limb loss, given the prevalent rates of coexisting diabetes and peripheral arterial disease (PAD). Moreover, despite the perception that a healed minor amputation might obviate the need for a future major amputation, previous work documented increased longitudinal rates of limb loss among non-veteran Medicare beneficiaries. OBJECTIVE: To document the corresponding incidence of major amputation among veterans after a prior minor amputation and accordingly benchmark Veterans Affairs (VA) health care delivery compared to non-VA civilian ho

BACKGROUND: Dementia is increasingly common among older adults (≥ 65 years) and is associated with poor outcomes. However, little is known about its baseline prevalence in patients hospitalized with acute coronary syndrome (ACS), particularly across revascularization strategies. METHODS: The authors conducted a cross-sectional analysis from a current longitudinal cohort study of Kaiser Permanente Northern California members hospitalized with ACS between January 2010 and December 2020. Dementia diagnoses and subtypes were identified using International Classification of Diseases 9/10 codes. Ba

Agonistic anti-CD40 antibodies in patients with solid tumors: a systematic review and evidence map of clinical safety, with exploratory proportional synthesis.

BACKGROUND: Agonistic anti-CD40 antibodies and related CD40 agonist biologics are being developed across multiple solid tumors using diverse biologic formats, delivery routes, and combination regimens. Safety is central to their clinical development but remains difficult to interpret because high-grade adverse events in combination settings may reflect partner therapies, and safety outcomes are reported inconsistently. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review and evidence map of the clinical safety of CD40 agonists in patients with solid tumors. Major bibliographic databases, trial registrie
