Cross-country comparison of perinatal outcomes between japanese mothers in the united states and japan: a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: In the USA, studies often show that immigrants exhibit relatively favourable perinatal outcomes compared with their US-born counterparts of the same race/ethnicity, despite socioeconomic and language barriers in healthcare. However, studies with individuals in their home country are limited. METHODS AND RESULTS: We analysed 32 028 Japanese who gave singleton births from two data sources: the US vital statistics records (N=19 462) and the Birth and Three-Generation Cohort Study conducted by the Tohoku Medical Megabank Organization (N=12 566) between 2015 and 2017. The US data wer

National Survival Rates among 22-Week Live Births in the United States: Associations with Active Treatment.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of Active Perinatal Treatment (AT) for 22-week live births on national 1-year survival trends to guide clinical decisions and counseling. STUDY DESIGN: We utilized U.S. natality data (2019-2022) to identify a cohort of non-anomalous, singleton live births at 22 weeks' gestation. The cohort was divided into two groups: AT and Non-Active Perinatal Treatment (Non-AT). AT was defined as receiving more than one of the following: Antenatal corticosteroids, cesarean delivery, neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) admission, neonatal antibiotics, surfa

Fetal Structural Anomalies and Vasa Previa Newly Identified After an Unremarkable Mid-Trimester Systematic Ultrasound Screening: Clinical Significance and Follow-Up Findings in 47 Cases.

BACKGROUND: Some fetal structural anomalies and cases of vasa previa may not be detectable until after mid-trimester ultrasound screening. This study evaluated the spectrum, sonographic features, and perinatal outcomes of these newly detected abnormalities. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 14 579 singleton pregnancies that underwent standardized mid-trimester ultrasound screening with no structural abnormalities detected at that time. Among these, 47 fetuses had anomalies newly identified before delivery. One additional pregnancy, in which multiple malformations were already detected at m

Documented In-Hospital Lactation Support and Exclusive Breastfeeding During the Postpartum Stay.

IMPORTANCE: Exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) during the postpartum hospital stay is associated with longer breastfeeding duration. Electronic health record (EHR) data can be used to uncover patterns in missed and inequitable breastfeeding care that may be associated with persistent breastfeeding disparities. OBJECTIVES: To assess the association of documented postpartum in-hospital breastfeeding care with EBF and test differences in documented care by feeding intention and demographic and clinical characteristics. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study of EHR data from a

Cesarean section-induced changes in the gut microbiota facilitate metabolic disease in high-fat diet-induced obese mice.

BACKGROUND: The global rate of cesarean section (CS) births is increasing. Growing evidence suggests that CS birth may alter the gut microbiota (i.e., dysbiosis) and increase the risk of immune and metabolic disorders, although confounding factors make causality difficult to establish. The studies presented here aimed to investigate the causal relationship between CS-induced gut dysbiosis and obesity in a diet-induced obese mouse model and explore potential microbiota-targeted therapies. RESULTS: In the first study, male C57BL/6 mice were delivered via CS or vaginally (VD) and fed a high- or

Heritability of postpartum depression in female twin pairs: A Danish population-based cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: Postpartum depression (PPD) is a common but severe psychiatric condition following childbirth, and its underlying causes and degree of heritability remain unclear. We aimed to examine the heritability of PPD among parous female twin pairs. METHOD: We linked data from the Danish Twin Register to nationwide health registers. Zygosity was defined as monozygotic (MZ) or dizygotic (DZ) based on validated questionnaires, and PPD was defined using hospital diagnosis of depressive disorders or filled prescriptions of antidepressant medication during the first year postpartum. We used a cla

Lifestyle behaviours in children born extremely preterm at 2 years: a comparison to a Dutch reference population.

UNLABELLED: Children born extremely preterm (EP, < 28 weeks gestation) are at increased risk of lifestyle-related morbidities. This study characterized parent-reported lifestyle behaviours in EP-born children at 2 years' corrected age (CA) and compared them with a Dutch reference population. In a multicentre prospective cohort study, parents completed the FLY-Kids lifestyle screening questionnaire (2 years' CA), which assessed parental satisfaction and adherence to age-specific recommendations for diet, eating habits, physical activity, screen time and sleep. Outcomes were compared with a Dutc

Factors Contributing to Higher Maternal Mortality and Preterm Birth Rates Among Black and South Asian Women Than Caucasian Women in Leicester: A Narrative Review.

This narrative review aims to explore why ethnic inequalities in preterm birth and maternal mortality are present, specifically among Black and South Asian women within the United Kingdom. We are particularly focusing on Leicester and Leicestershire. This review aims to address the underlying reasons as to why these inequalities are present. Leicester has a high proportion of ethnic minorities compared with the rest of the United Kingdom, making it an important context for exploring disparities in maternity outcomes.  A structured search in Medline (OVID) was conducted using keywords and MeSH

Higher Risk of Serious Infection in Offspring of Mothers With Biopsy-Proven MASLD: A Nationwide Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) has been linked to an increased risk of serious infection, but the impact of in utero exposure to maternal MASLD on the risk of infection in offspring remains unknown. METHODS: This nationwide cohort study included all singleton live born offspring exposed in utero to maternal biopsy-proven MASLD (1992-2017) in Sweden. Offspring born to mothers with MASLD (N = 239) were matched with up to five reference offspring (N = 1131) of mothers without MASLD by maternal age at delivery, calendar year of delivery, and parity. Palau Tobacco Excise Tax 2013: An Evaluation of Tobacco Use, Imports, and Expenditures.

Tobacco use is a public health concern in the Republic of Palau, where cigarette smoking and betel nut chewing with tobacco are highly prevalent. In 2013, Palau enacted the Fiscal Year 2014 Budget Act with Section 26 that established an excise tax on tobacco products beginning in 2014. This study assessed the impact of the tobacco tax on adult and youth tobacco use prevalence, tobacco importation, and household tobacco expenditure between 2010 and 2024. Data were extracted from 3 adult population-based surveys (2011, 2016, 2023), 3 youth census surveys (2013, 2017, 2022), annual tobacco import

Obstetric interventions and childbirth experience: A population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: A negative birth experience can have profound and lasting consequences for women's health and family planning. Obstetric interventions have been associated with increased likelihood of a negative birth experience. However, the impact of accumulated and varying combination of interventions remains less understood. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, we used data from 22,585 singleton births among 10,903 women (8705 primipara births, 13,880 multipara births) who participated in the Stress-And-Gene-Analysis (SAGA) study and had a record in the Icelandic Medical Birth Registe

Anti-Müllerian hormone ameliorates uterine DNA damage response and prevents pregnancy complications in doxorubicin-treated mice†.

Anti-Müllerian hormone is a promising fertoprotective agent, demonstrating particularly strong efficacy against doxorubicin-induced ovarian toxicity. However, the impact of chemotherapy on the uterus, and the potential benefits of anti-Müllerian hormone in this context, remain poorly understood. In this study, we characterized doxorubicin-induced uterine damage and assessed the fertoprotective effect of anti-Müllerian hormone co-treatment in mice. Acutely, doxorubicin treatment caused the accumulation of DNA damage in multiple uterine cell-types, including the myometrium, as evidenced by both

Midwifery-led continuity-of-care education affects health literacy, empowerment and childbirth fear: a quasi-experimental study.

BACKGROUND: According to the World Health Organisation, antenatal care should ensure continuity, respect and evidence-based education. Fear of childbirth (FOC), affecting 20-40% of women globally, contributes to prolonged labour, higher caesarean rates and negative birth experiences. In Türkiye, where midwifery-led support remains limited, this study examined how pregnant women's health literacy influences empowerment and FOC within antenatal care and evaluated the effectiveness of the midwifery-led continuity-of-care (MLCC) model. METHODS: A quasi-experimental study with a comparative group

Optimizing developmental outcomes in premature infants through a multidisciplinary approach to care.

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth remains the leading risk factor for perinatal mortality and morbidity. Infants born preterm miss critical periods of development, placing them at increased risk for a range of neurodevelopmental, motor, and sensory complications. These complex health outcomes are further compounded by biological, behavioral, and social factors, with socioeconomically disadvantaged populations disproportionally affected. As rates of preterm birth rise, and survival improves at increasingly earlier gestational ages, the demand for comprehensive and accessible care for this high-risk pop

Umbilical Cord Blood pH Level, Apgar Score, and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

IMPORTANCE: Perinatal hypoxia is an important cause of neurodevelopmental impairment and may thus be associated with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). In population-based studies, hypoxia is often assessed by Apgar score alone; however, criteria for relevant perinatal hypoxia require both clinical and biochemical abnormalities (eg, a low Apgar score and a low umbilical cord blood pH level). OBJECTIVES: To identify full-term and near-term newborns exposed to hypoxia by combining the Apgar score and the umbilical cord blood pH level and to investigate their association with ADHD.

Sibling Recurrence Risk of Non-Chromosomal Birth Defects: A Population-Based Study in Florida, 2000-2019.

OBJECTIVES: To estimate sibling recurrence risk for non-chromosomal birth defects using statewide, population-based data. METHODS: We analyzed data from the Florida Birth Defects Registry to identify singleton siblings born 2000-2019 with any of 43 non-chromosomal birth defects. Multivariable logistic regression was used to estimate adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the association between birth defect occurrence in the older sibling (exposure) and in the younger sibling (outcome). Two analytic scenarios were considered: (1) any birth defect in the younger sibl

The role of poverty-related social determinants in maternal and perinatal health inequities: a cross-sectional study using the eLIXIR born in South London, UK maternity-child data linkage.

BACKGROUND: Evidence on how poverty and social determinants influence adverse maternal and perinatal outcomes in the UK is limited. While ethnicity and area-level deprivation are well described, fewer studies examine the cumulative impact of poverty-related factors such as low income, employment insecurity, housing, and access to social support. METHODS: We analysed 67,308 pregnancies from the eLIXIR cohort using linked NHS records. Social determinants were defined using the WHO framework as structural (ethnicity, migration status, area deprivation) and intermediary (housing, employment, fina
