Intimate partner violence, multiple mental health conditions and risk of small vulnerable newborn births: a maternity population-based data linkage study.

BACKGROUND: Small vulnerable newborn birth (SVN) encompasses infants born preterm, small for gestational age, or low birthweight, and accounts for most neonatal deaths worldwide. This maternity population-based administrative data-linkage cohort study aimed to estimate the risk of SVN associated with maternal intimate partner violence (IPV) experience. METHODS: Records were included for women who accessed maternity services in Northern Ireland and had a singleton pregnancy, with liveborn or stillborn infants born 24-42 weeks' gestation, with an estimated pregnancy start date 01 January 2011-3

Risk factors and analysis of retinopathy of prematurity in monochorionic diamniotic twins.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the impact of intrauterine pathologies, including twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) and selective intrauterine growth restriction (sIUGR), on the development of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in monochorionic diamniotic (MCDA) twins and to establish risk prediction models. METHODS: A retrospective case-control study was conducted including 466 MCDA preterm twins born before 37 weeks. Participants were categorized into three groups (TTTS, sIUGR, and uncomplicated). Clinical and laboratory data were analyzed. Significant predictors were identified via random

Fetal Growth Restriction at a Universal Late Third-Trimester Scan and Relationship With Adverse Outcome: Retrospective Cohort Study.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the contribution of fetal growth restriction ultrasound phenotypes to adverse perinatal outcomes at term. DESIGN: Retrospective population-based cohort study. SETTING: John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, UK where universal ultrasound at 35+1-36+6 weeks is performed. POPULATION: Congenital abnormalities and births before the scan were excluded. Singleton foetuses were categorised as five mutually exclusive phenotypes using a hierarchical approach: ISUOG fetal growth restriction (FGR), according to Delphi criteria; Constitutional small-for-gestational-age (SGA) (estimated f

Association between timing of antenatal corticosteroid and developmental outcomes in children born late preterm by high-risk pregnancies.

OBJECTIVE: High-risk pregnancies often receive antenatal corticosteroids (ACS) before 34 weeks, even when delivery occurs in the late preterm period. We aimed to evaluate whether the timing of ACS exposure is associated with developmental delay in late preterm infants born to high-risk mothers. METHODS: We conducted a national, retrospective cohort study of 40,119 singleton late preterm (LPI) live births born in Taiwan between January 1, 2004, and December 31, 2011, followed up until December 31, 2018. We defined high-risk pregnancies based on four clinical conditions: diabetes mellitus, advan

Early gestational diabetes mellitus and type 2 diabetes: do they differ in perinatal outcome- a retrospective analysis.

BACKGROUND: The rise in type 2 diabetes (T2D) during pregnancy is mainly due to increasing obesity and metabolic disorders. Early gestational diabetes mellitus (eGDM), diagnosed before 20 weeks, is also becoming more common and often may explain underlying metabolic problems. This study compares perinatal and neonatal outcomes in patients with T2D and eGDM. METHODS: This retrospective study included 141 pregnant women (70 with T2D and 71 with eGDM) and their singleton term neonates born between 2020 and 2025. The women attended at least one follow-up visit per trimester. eGDM was diagnosed bef

Feeding challenges in larger versus smaller preterm discordant twins.

BACKGROUND: This single-center retrospective cohort study aims to compare the risk of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) and feed intolerance between the larger and the smaller preterm twin in dichorionic (DC) and monochorionic (MC) twins with birth weight discordance (BWD). METHODS: All consecutive live-born twin pairs born in the Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital between 1 January 2023, and 31 July 2025, were reviewed. BWD was defined as more than 20% difference in intertwin birth weight. Neonatal outcomes were compared between the larger and the smaller twin within each twin pair. Data on the start

Birth Weight Percentiles and Infant and Child Growth Dynamics.

IMPORTANCE: Infants classified as small or large for gestational age can have different growth patterns compared with appropriate-for-gestational age counterparts. The association of birth weight percentiles beyond conventional thresholds with early-life growth remains unknown. OBJECTIVE: To quantify the association of birth weight percentile range with infant and child growth. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This is a prospective cohort study of singletons born between 1991 and 2011 in 7 birth cohort studies in Europe, Singapore, and the US and followed up with repeated growth measuremen

Placental histopathology and early childhood neurodevelopment in the Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes cohort.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal exposures influence childhood neurodevelopment. Placental histopathology has been associated with abnormal early childhood neurodevelopment, albeit often confounded by prematurity and/or fetal growth restriction. Most pregnant people, however, have term births, and some of these children have abnormal neurodevelopment despite the absence of adverse birth outcomes. Leveraging placental histopathology may help distinguish infants at a higher risk of subsequent neurodevelopmental impairment following a term birth. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association of placental histop

The magnitude and population burden of educational inequalities in adverse birth outcomes.

We aimed to describe the magnitude and population burden of inequality in adverse birth outcomes by maternal education (five categories). Data from 639,007 singleton births of gestational age ≥ 24 weeks or, if missing, birthweight ≥ 500 g were included from the National registry of the Netherlands, 2016-2019. One in six Dutch births had an adverse outcome. Each step down the educational ladder was associated with higher adverse outcome rates. Inequalities in stillbirth and neonatal mortality rates were large between the highest (Master's or higher) and lowest (primary) educated groups (rate ra

Prevalence, interactions, determinants and outcomes of low birth weight, small for gestational age and fetal growth restriction among term neonates.

INTRODUCTION: Small for gestational age and fetal growth restriction are two leading causes for low birth weight in term newborns. Due to the considerable overlap, the exact interactions between these groups have not been adequately studied. We aim to determine the prevalence, interactions, determinants, and outcomes of low birth weight, small for gestational age, and fetal growth restriction in term neonates. METHODS: A cross-sectional study with a short-term follow-up was conducted at Colombo North Teaching Hospital, Ragama, Sri Lanka, between June and August 2025. All neonates of singleton

Severe Persistent Neonatal Immune Thrombocytopenia Despite Optimized Maternal Chronic Immune Thrombocytopenia (ITP) Management.

Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is the most common cause of thrombocytopenia in pregnancy, with maternal autoantibodies crossing the placenta and predisposing neonates to severe thrombocytopenia. Neonatal immune thrombocytopenia (NIT) can result in significant morbidity, including intracranial hemorrhage. We report a term neonate born to a mother with chronic severe ITP. Despite antenatal therapy with corticosteroids, intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG), and elective cesarean delivery at a safe maternal platelet threshold, the neonate presented with severe thrombocytopenia requiring multiple plate

Neonatal outcomes after reduction of nulliparous term singleton vertex cesarean deliveries.

Rising global cesarean delivery rates have become a marked public health concern, prompting national and international organizations to advocate for measures aimed at reducing primary cesarean rates. The impact of decreasing cesarean rates on neonatal outcomes remains understudied. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of a hospital-wide initiative to reduce nulliparous term singleton vertex cesarean delivery rates on neonatal and maternal outcomes, focusing on identifying improvements or unintended consequences associated with the reduction in nulliparous term singleton vertex cesarean rate

Beyond cut-offs: gestational age-specific perinatal mortality across the birthweight-for-gestational-age continuum-a population-based cross-sectional study.

UNLABELLED: Abnormal fetal growth is linked to increased perinatal morbidity and mortality. Birthweight percentiles-commonly the 10th and 90th-define small (SGA) and large for gestational age (LGA) infants. Although birthweight charts are periodically updated, cut-offs for SGA and LGA remain fixed, despite changes in population characteristics and evolving clinical management. We aimed to characterize how perinatal mortality varies continuously across birthweight-for-gestational-age (BW-for-GA) and gestational age (GA), describing GA-specific mortality gradients rather than defining new cut-of

The Methodological Pitfalls Complicating the Analysis of Early Term Births.

BACKGROUND: Evaluating the success of policies aiming to reduce early term birth (37+0-38+6 weeks' gestation) is analytically challenging. OBJECTIVES: Determine the best method of reporting temporal changes of early term birth rates. METHODS: We analysed 54,646 singleton births at Western Australia's main tertiary hospital (2009-2019). Using interrupted time series, segmented and nominal regression, we assessed how varying gestational age outcomes, denominator, or statistical method affected conclusions regarding temporal changes (pre and post-Initiative implementation) in the timing of birt

Maternal Health of Female Sex Workers in Six Low- and Middle-Income Countries.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine factors that impact maternal health, including antenatal care and skilled birth attendance, work behavior, and substance use during pregnancy among female sex workers (FSW) across six low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). The added knowledge may inform programs, policies, and funding on a level equivalent to those for HIV prevention to reduce the high numbers of maternal deaths among this population. METHODS: This was an exploratory mixed methods study. Quantitative data were gathered from cross-sectional surveys completed by 1352 FSW. The
