Prescription Use of Paracetamol During Pregnancy and Risk of Autism Spectrum Disorder and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder in Early Childhood.

OBJECTIVE: Paracetamol is the drug of choice for treating pain and fever during pregnancy. Concerns exist regarding risk of neurodevelopmental disorders in prenatally exposed offspring, especially autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Since September 2013, most paracetamol sales in Denmark have been prescription based, enabling investigation in a population-based setting. We investigated the association between prescription-based paracetamol use during pregnancy and the risk of clinically diagnosed ASD and ADHD detected in early childhood among exp

Hypoxic Ischemic Encephalopathy and Maternal Adverse Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: There is a paucity of publications on the composite maternal adverse outcomes (CMAO) among deliveries complicated with versus without neonatal hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). OBJECTIVE: To compare the CMAO among deliveries complicated with versus without HIE. STUDY DESIGN: This is a secondary analysis of data from Assessment of Perinatal Excellence (APEX), an observational study (from March 2008 to Feb 2011) conducted across 25 hospitals by the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Maternal-Fetal Medicine Units Network. The inclusi

Neurodevelopmental Outcomes in Children Born After Fresh Versus Frozen Embryo Transfer.

OBJECTIVE: Evidence on the long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes of children born after frozen embryo transfer (ET) versus fresh embryo transfer (ET) remains limited and inconclusive. This study aimed to compare the risks of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), cerebral palsy (CP), and intellectual disability (ID) in children conceived via frozen ET, fresh ET, and natural conception (NC). METHOD: This nationwide population-based cohort study linked four Taiwanese national databases to identify a cohort of singleton births between 2004 and 2016, with

Cross-country comparison of perinatal outcomes between japanese mothers in the united states and japan: a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: In the USA, studies often show that immigrants exhibit relatively favourable perinatal outcomes compared with their US-born counterparts of the same race/ethnicity, despite socioeconomic and language barriers in healthcare. However, studies with individuals in their home country are limited. METHODS AND RESULTS: We analysed 32 028 Japanese who gave singleton births from two data sources: the US vital statistics records (N=19 462) and the Birth and Three-Generation Cohort Study conducted by the Tohoku Medical Megabank Organization (N=12 566) between 2015 and 2017. The US data wer

National Survival Rates among 22-Week Live Births in the United States: Associations with Active Treatment.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of Active Perinatal Treatment (AT) for 22-week live births on national 1-year survival trends to guide clinical decisions and counseling. STUDY DESIGN: We utilized U.S. natality data (2019-2022) to identify a cohort of non-anomalous, singleton live births at 22 weeks' gestation. The cohort was divided into two groups: AT and Non-Active Perinatal Treatment (Non-AT). AT was defined as receiving more than one of the following: Antenatal corticosteroids, cesarean delivery, neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) admission, neonatal antibiotics, surfa

Fetal Structural Anomalies and Vasa Previa Newly Identified After an Unremarkable Mid-Trimester Systematic Ultrasound Screening: Clinical Significance and Follow-Up Findings in 47 Cases.

BACKGROUND: Some fetal structural anomalies and cases of vasa previa may not be detectable until after mid-trimester ultrasound screening. This study evaluated the spectrum, sonographic features, and perinatal outcomes of these newly detected abnormalities. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 14 579 singleton pregnancies that underwent standardized mid-trimester ultrasound screening with no structural abnormalities detected at that time. Among these, 47 fetuses had anomalies newly identified before delivery. One additional pregnancy, in which multiple malformations were already detected at m

Documented In-Hospital Lactation Support and Exclusive Breastfeeding During the Postpartum Stay.

IMPORTANCE: Exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) during the postpartum hospital stay is associated with longer breastfeeding duration. Electronic health record (EHR) data can be used to uncover patterns in missed and inequitable breastfeeding care that may be associated with persistent breastfeeding disparities. OBJECTIVES: To assess the association of documented postpartum in-hospital breastfeeding care with EBF and test differences in documented care by feeding intention and demographic and clinical characteristics. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study of EHR data from a

Higher Risk of Serious Infection in Offspring of Mothers With Biopsy-Proven MASLD: A Nationwide Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) has been linked to an increased risk of serious infection, but the impact of in utero exposure to maternal MASLD on the risk of infection in offspring remains unknown. METHODS: This nationwide cohort study included all singleton live born offspring exposed in utero to maternal biopsy-proven MASLD (1992-2017) in Sweden. Offspring born to mothers with MASLD (N = 239) were matched with up to five reference offspring (N = 1131) of mothers without MASLD by maternal age at delivery, calendar year of delivery, and parity. Obstetric interventions and childbirth experience: A population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: A negative birth experience can have profound and lasting consequences for women's health and family planning. Obstetric interventions have been associated with increased likelihood of a negative birth experience. However, the impact of accumulated and varying combination of interventions remains less understood. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, we used data from 22,585 singleton births among 10,903 women (8705 primipara births, 13,880 multipara births) who participated in the Stress-And-Gene-Analysis (SAGA) study and had a record in the Icelandic Medical Birth Registe

Umbilical Cord Blood pH Level, Apgar Score, and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

IMPORTANCE: Perinatal hypoxia is an important cause of neurodevelopmental impairment and may thus be associated with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). In population-based studies, hypoxia is often assessed by Apgar score alone; however, criteria for relevant perinatal hypoxia require both clinical and biochemical abnormalities (eg, a low Apgar score and a low umbilical cord blood pH level). OBJECTIVES: To identify full-term and near-term newborns exposed to hypoxia by combining the Apgar score and the umbilical cord blood pH level and to investigate their association with ADHD.

Sibling Recurrence Risk of Non-Chromosomal Birth Defects: A Population-Based Study in Florida, 2000-2019.

OBJECTIVES: To estimate sibling recurrence risk for non-chromosomal birth defects using statewide, population-based data. METHODS: We analyzed data from the Florida Birth Defects Registry to identify singleton siblings born 2000-2019 with any of 43 non-chromosomal birth defects. Multivariable logistic regression was used to estimate adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the association between birth defect occurrence in the older sibling (exposure) and in the younger sibling (outcome). Two analytic scenarios were considered: (1) any birth defect in the younger sibl

Associations between maternal race, socioeconomic status and shoulder dystocia: a population-based retrospective cohort study in Ontario Canada.

BACKGROUND: Shoulder dystocia is a severe and emergent adverse perinatal complication. Existing literature suggests that the risk of shoulder dystocia varies by race and socioeconomic status, but research in this area is lacking in Canada. OBJECTIVES: To examine variations of shoulder dystocia by maternal race and maternal socioeconomic status and evaluate the interaction between race and macrosomia on the occurrence of shoulder dystocia. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a population-based retrospective cohort study including White and Black pregnant people who participated in prenatal screening and

Educational Attainment of Children With Major Congenital Anomalies During Primary School in England: A Population Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Major congenital anomalies (CA) affect 2.3% of livebirths and are associated with lower educational attainment. Understanding attainment trajectories throughout primary school would inform parents, schools and organisations and help plan support. OBJECTIVES: We compared school enrolment and attainment at ages 5, 7 and 11 in children with different CA and their peers in England using the Education and Child Health Insights using Linked Data database. METHODS: We included all singleton children born in NHS-funded hospitals from September 2003 to August 2008 who enrolled in state-fu

Single or Double Embryo Transfer for Infertility: An Evaluation of Registry Data From Over 22 000 Treatment Cycles.

BACKGROUND: Single embryo transfer (SET) is considered the most effective method for reducing multiple pregnancies in assisted reproduction. Nevertheless, couples in Germany often opt for double embryo transfer (DET) in the hope of achieving a higher success rate. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of two consecutive SETs compared to one DET. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of data from 133 German fertility clinics. Treatment cycles between January 2017 and December 2022 were analyzed. The parameters examined were the clinical pregnancy rate (CPR) and the l

Association of sleep duration at 1.5 years with overweight/obesity at 3 years and effect modification by allergic conditions: The Japan Environment and Children's Study.

BACKGROUND: Evidence on associations of short sleep duration with obesity is limited and conflicting in toddlers. Additionally, the role of allergic conditions in this association remains elusive although the allergic conditions are known to affect both sleep quality and the development of obesity. METHODS: In the current study, we investigated these associations using the Japan Environment and Children's Study, a nationwide prospective birth cohort. Data from 52,047 term-singleton births born with appropriate-for-gestational age without background disorders were included. Self-administered q

Reference Intervals of Hematological Parameters Among Healthy Newborns in Eastern Sudan: A Hospital-Based Cross-Sectional Study.

Background: Accurate interpretation of neonatal complete blood count (CBC) parameters is vital for managing life-threatening conditions in newborns. However, clinical decisions in Eastern Sudan frequently rely on non-local Western-derived or manufacturer-provided reference intervals (RIs), thereby risking diagnostic errors. Therefore, this study aimed to establish the local neonatal hematological RIs for healthy, term newborns in Eastern Sudan. Methods: This hospital-based, cross-sectional study was conducted at New Halfa Hospital. Umbilical cord blood samples were collected from 250 healthy t

Cord serum metabolomic profiling associated with in utero exposure to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances and birthweight discordance in twins: findings from Wuhan Twin Birth Cohort.

Emerging evidence links per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) exposure and metabolic disruptions to fetal growth retardation. However, earlier studies on singletons could not fully account for genetic factors. Therefore, we used a cotwin control study design to identify cord metabolomic signatures of PFAS exposure and assess its mediating role in twin birthweight discordance. We analyzed 204 twin neonates born from the Wuhan Twin Birth Cohort (August 2016 to January 2018). Cord serum PFAS concentrations and untargeted metabolomic profiles were determined using liquid chromatography-tandem

Long-Term Health Outcomes of Children Born After In Vitro Fertilization (IVF): A Narrative Review.

The aim of this narrative review is to present long-term health outcomes of children conceived after in vitro fertilization (IVF). The narrative synthesis has mainly been based on systematic reviews/meta-analyses and cohort studies. Various effects were examined, spanning the neurodevelopment, cardiovascular function and metabolism, respiratory system, malignancies, reproductive health, gastrointestinal system, and endocrine glands. As a rule, children born after IVF, when restricted to singletons and cryopreservation of embryos is avoided, did not face a significant risk to the most health co

Risk factors for hemodynamically significant patent ductus arteriosus and ibuprofen treatment failure in premature twins: a retrospective case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Premature twins face a dual challenge: a high incidence of hemodynamically significant patent ductus arteriosus (hsPDA) and a poor response to ibuprofen. Current management, derived from singleton data, fails to address this population's unique risks. Our study specifically investigates risk factors for hsPDA development and ibuprofen treatment failure in preterm twins to enable personalized prevention and therapy. Thus, the potential biomarkers for the occurrence of hsPDA and ibuprofen closure failure were examined. METHODS: A single-center, retrospective case-control study. 736
