Infertility and Risk of Autism Spectrum Disorder in Children.

IMPORTANCE: Previous studies on the risk of childhood autism spectrum disorder (ASD) following fertility treatment did not account for the infertility itself or the mediating effect of obstetrical and neonatal factors. OBJECTIVE: To assess the association between infertility and its treatments on the risk of ASD and the mediating effect of selected adverse pregnancy outcomes on that association. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This was a population-based cohort study in Ontario, Canada. Participants were all singleton and multifetal live births at 24 or more weeks' gestation from 2006 to

Artificial Neural Network Modeling to Predict Neonatal Metabolic Bone Disease in the Prenatal and Postnatal Periods.

IMPORTANCE: Early recognition of metabolic bone disease (MBD) in infants is necessary but difficult; an appropriate tool to screen infants at risk of developing MBD is needed. OBJECTIVES: To develop a predictive model for neonates at risk for MBD in the prenatal and postnatal periods and detect the pivotal exposed factors in each period. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A diagnostic study was conducted from January 1, 2012, to December 31, 2021, in Shanghai, China. A total of 10 801 pregnant women (singleton pregnancy, followed up until 1 month after parturition) and their infants (n = 10

Association of In Utero Antipsychotic Medication Exposure With Risk of Congenital Malformations in Nordic Countries and the US.

IMPORTANCE: Psychiatric disorders are common among female individuals of reproductive age. While antipsychotic medication use is increasing, the safety of such medications in pregnancy is an area with large evidence gaps. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the risk of first-trimester antipsychotic exposure with respect to congenital malformations, focusing on individual drugs and specific malformation subtypes. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study used data from nationwide health registers from the 5 Nordic countries and the US and spanned 1996 to 2018. The Nordic cohort included all pre

Trends in percentages of gestational diabetes mellitus attributable to overweight, obesity, and morbid obesity in regional Victoria: an eight-year population-based panel study.

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is the fastest growing type of diabetes in Australia with rates trebling over the past decades partially explained by rising obesity rates and maternal age among childbearing women. Percentage of GDM attributable to obesity has been documented, mostly focusing on metropolitan populations. In parts of regional (areas outside capital cities) and rural Australia where overweight, obesity and morbid obesity are more prevalent, intertwined with socioeconomic disadvantage and higher migrant communities, trends over time in adjusted percentages of GDM a

Glyphosate exposure in early pregnancy and reduced fetal growth: a prospective observational study of high-risk pregnancies.

BACKGROUND: Prenatal glyphosate (GLY) exposure is associated with adverse reproductive outcomes in animal studies. Little is known about the effects of GLY exposure during pregnancy in the human population. This study aims to establish baseline urine GLY levels in a high-risk and racially diverse pregnancy cohort and to assess the relationship between prenatal GLY exposure and fetal development and birth outcomes. METHODS: Random first trimester urine specimens were collected from high risk pregnant women between 2013 and 2016 as part of the Indiana Pregnancy Environmental Exposures Study (PE

Placental pathology, neonatal birth weight, and Apgar score in acute and distant SARS-CoV-2 infection.

BACKGROUND: Most research on severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection during pregnancy has been on acute infections with limited data on the effect of distant infection. AIM: We examined placental pathology and neonatal outcomes in distant SARS-CoV-2 infection earlier in pregnancy compared to acute infections late in pregnancy/at birth and to non-SARS-CoV-2 infected patients with other placental pathologies/clinical presentations. METHODS: Placentas birthed to unvaccinated patients with SARS-CoV-2 reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) testing

Why are babies in Canada getting smaller?

INTRODUCTION: Recent evidence from the United States and Canada suggests an unexplained increase in small-for-gestational-age (SGA) births (<10th percentile). This study aimed to identify reasons for the recent increase in SGA births in Canada. DATA AND METHODS: Using Canada's Vital Statistics - Birth Database, the study population included all singleton live births, 2000 to 2016, inclusive. Temporal changes in birth weight (grams), birth weight for gestational age z-scores, and SGA births were examined. Multivariable logistic regression was used to determine if the ncreased risk of an SGA bi

Association of Birth Year of Pregnant Individuals With Trends in Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy in the United States, 1995-2019.

IMPORTANCE: Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy are leading causes of morbidity and mortality among pregnant individuals as well as newborns, with increasing incidence during the past decade. Understanding the individual associations of advancing age of pregnant individuals at delivery, more recent delivery year (period), and more recent birth year of pregnant individuals (cohort) with adverse trends in hypertensive disorders of pregnancy could help guide public health efforts to improve the health of pregnant individuals. OBJECTIVE: To clarify the independent associations of delivery year an

Importance of Reporting Complete Procedures of Identifying Patients from the Danish National Patient Registry: The Case of Neonatal Jaundice and Epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: The Danish National Patient Registry (DNPR) is a valuable resource for medical and epidemiological Research. However, not all research articles fully described procedures they used to identify events. In this study, we compared two approaches in identifying persons with a disease diagnosis using neonatal jaundice and epilepsy as examples. METHODS: A cohort of singletons born alive between the 1st January 1997 and the 30th November 2016 in Denmark was used for this purpose. Diagnostic information for a hospital contact in the registry included a primary diagnosis, secondary diagnose

Maternal Cigarette Smoking During Pregnancy and Genital Anomalies in Boys: A Register-Based Cohort and Sibling-Matched Design Study.

PURPOSE: Cryptorchidism and hypospadias share several prenatal risk factors. However, in published studies, boys exposed to cigarette smoking during pregnancy have a higher risk of cryptorchidism and a lower risk of hypospadias. Using Danish register-based data, we revisited these findings with a cohort and sibling-matched design to investigate the potential effect of shared time-stable factors. PATIENTS AND METHODS: For the cohort study, we included 823,670 live-born, singleton boys born from 1991 to 2016. Crude and adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were estima

Associations Between Maternal Antenatal Corticosteroid Treatment and Psychological Developmental and Neurosensory Disorders in Children.

IMPORTANCE: Corticosteroids administered to women at risk of imminent preterm birth is one of the most effective ways to improve the prognosis of infants born preterm. Scant data about long-term neurodevelopmental and neurosensory outcomes among the treatment-exposed children are mixed, suggesting that not all domains of neurodevelopmental and neurosensory function may be equally affected. Moreover, the long-term outcomes may vary according to whether the treatment-exposed children are being born preterm (<37 weeks and 0 days) or term (≥37 weeks and 0 days). OBJECTIVES: To study whether anten

Genetic liability to posttraumatic stress disorder and its association with postpartum depression.

BACKGROUND: Childbirth may be a traumatic experience and vulnerability to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may increase the risk of postpartum depression (PPD). We investigated whether genetic vulnerability to PTSD as measured by polygenic score (PGS) increases the risk of PPD and whether a predisposition to PTSD in PPD cases exceeds that of major depressive disorder (MDD) outside the postpartum period. METHODS: This case-control study included participants from the iPSYCH2015, a case-cohort of all singletons born in Denmark between 1981 and 2008. Restricting to women born between 1981 an

Assessment of Cesarean Delivery and Neurodevelopmental and Psychiatric Disorders in the Children of a Population-Based Swedish Birth Cohort.

IMPORTANCE: Recent studies suggest that cesarean delivery (CD) is associated with increased risk of neurodevelopmental disorders in children, although they were unable to control for indications for CD or familial confounding beyond full siblings. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between CD and neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders in children. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This Swedish register-based cohort study included 1 179 341 term-birth singletons born between January 1, 1990, and December 31, 2003, and followed up through December 31, 2013. Out-of-Hospital Birth.

Since the 1970s, most births in the United States have been planned to occur in a hospital. However, a small percentage of Americans choose to give birth outside of a hospital. The number of out-of-hospital births has increased, with one in every 61 U.S. births (1.64%) occurring out of the hospital in 2018. Out-of-hospital (or community) birth can be planned or unplanned. Of those that are planned, most occur at home and are assisted by midwives. Patients who choose a planned community birth do so for multiple reasons. International observational studies that demonstrate comparable outcomes be
