OBJECTIVE: To describe the disparity in prenatal care among women of colour in timing of initiation of prenatal care and total number of prenatal visits.
DESIGN: A retrospective, descriptive design.
SETTING: A large, urban university midwifery faculty practice.
PARTICIPANTS: 439 healthy women at term (37-42 weeks gestation) with a vertex singleton pregnancy, and an essentially uncomplicated prenatal course. One clinic, the university facility, provided full-scope services. The other four community clinics, all outside the university in the larger metropolitan area, were designed to provide

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to measure the agreement between hospital records and maternal reporting of mode of delivery in a representative UK sample.
DESIGN: Population-based survey (Millennium Cohort Study).
SETTING: UK.
POPULATION: A total of 12,391 singleton infants born in 2000-2002.
METHODS: Mothers were interviewed when infants were approximately 9 months old. Information was collected by interview on many obstetric and perinatal factors including mode of delivery. Record linkage to the mother's delivery hospital records was undertaken in those who gave consent (90%)

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relation of diastolic blood pressure in pregnancy with birth weight and perinatal mortality.
DESIGN: Prospective study.
SETTING: 15 maternity units in one London health region, 1988-2000.
PARTICIPANTS: 210 814 first singleton births of babies weighing more than 200 g among mothers with no hypertension before 20 weeks' gestation and without proteinuria, delivering between 24 and 43 weeks' gestation.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Birth weight and perinatal mortality.
RESULTS: The mean (SD) birth weight of babies born to mothers with no hypertension before 20 weeks' ge

OBJECTIVE: To obtain birthweight standards for south Indian babies.
DESIGN: Prospective cohort study.
SETTING: A tertiary care hospital in south India.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Data from 11, 641 singleton live births between 1991 and 1994 were used to calculate smoothed gestation specific birthweight centiles for four categories based on sex of the infant and birth order. Smoothed gestation specific birthweight centiles were also calculated for all births between 37-41 weeks without adjustments for sex of infant or birth order. Data for births between 37 and 41 weeks were reanalysed using non-

This paper reports a study of the pregnancies followed to delivery in one family medicine group practice that offered a choice of childbirth settings. Those choosing out-of-hospital birth (OHB) were a self-selected group of highly motivated couples interested in natural childbirth or desiring to minimize the cost of pregnancy care. Of 790 singleton pregnancies followed to term, 71 (9.0%) planned home births, 510 (64.6%) planned clinic births, and 209 (26.5%) planned hospital births. Of those planning clinic or home birth, 73% gave birth outside the hospital as planned (44 at home and 379 in th

In an analysis of all singleton births and neonatal deaths with known birth weights and gestational ages in New York City maternity services during a three-year period (1976 to 1978), intensive care services at the hospital of birth were found to influence mortality only in preterm (less than 37 weeks' gestation) or low-birth-weight infants (less than 2251 g). By contrast, for infants who were born at term and of normal birth weight, mortality rates did not differ by level of perinatal care available at the hospital of birth. On the average, preterm and low-birth-weight infants were at a 24% h

Preterm infants of normal birth weight (born before 37 completed weeks of gestation and weighing more than 2,250 g) experience a neonatal mortality risk almost four times higher than do term infants in the same weight range. In an analysis of the effect of hospital level of birth on neonatal mortality, such preterm normal weight infants were found to experience higher mortality if born outside of a Level 3 (tertiary care) center. For all singleton infants in this weight-gestation category born in New York City maternity services during a 3-year period (N = 23,257), the relative mortality risk

The relationships between previous fetal loss (obtained by mother's statement) and certain categories of infant death including probable instances of the sudden infant death syndrome (SIDSp) were examined. The deaths were those occurring among the cohort of live singleton births born in the State of North Carolina, 1960-1967. SIDSp were defined by age (28-364 days), place of death (outside the hospital), and certain ICD code numbers of the 7th Revision (273, 331, 422.2, 491-493, 500-501, 522, 525, 527.2, 762, 795 and 924). Other deaths in the postneonatal period were dichotomized between conge

A total of 495 African infants of low birth weight were discharged from Harari Maternity Hospital, Salisbury, between October 1972 and September 1973. Criteria used for discharge were (a) no clinical evidence of disease, (b) satisfactory feeding by mouth (breast or bottle or both), and (c) stable temperature control under normal room conditions. Of the 495 babies 264 fulfilled these criteria when they weighed 1801-1900 g (group 1), 99 when they weighed 1901-2000 g (group 2), and 132 (group 3) when they weighed 2001-2500 g. The overall follow-up rate of those infants living in greater Salisbury
