For screening atopy risk in 6401 (84%) of all infants born during the year 1990 in six obstetric departments of five German cities, cord-blood IgE values were determined with CAP-RAST-FEIA. After cases with elevated IgA values had been excluded, 25% of the values were above the detection limit of 0.35 kU/l, and 8.5% were above 0.9 kU/l. A study on twin births was conducted from May 1993 to April 1994 at S.A.T. Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram. The annual variation of the sex ratio (SR) of 1385 twin births was analyzed and compared to that of 85909 singletons. These births referred not only to live births but also to stillbirths in two southeastern Brazilian maternity hospitals from 1984 to 1993. A total of 21 families with complete sets of triplets, born within 200 km of Stockholm, were invited to participate in a follow-up study with the aim of assessing the physical and mental development of their triplets at 4-6 years of age. A case was seen of partial hydatidiform mole coexisting with a viable twin pregnancy. Apart from prematurity which created early problems in caring for these girls twins, born with a good Apgar score and birth weights of 1400 g and 1350 g, the outcome was satisfactory for both the mother and daughters, who thrived marvelously. The incidence of this clinical form of trophoblastic disease which is 1/10,000 deliveries in our series confirms it rarity as reported by many authors.
