A rare cause of respiratory distress in preterm infants: a case report of acquired subglottic cysts.

BACKGROUND: The Subglottic Cysts (SGCs) are a rare cause of respiratory distress in infants. Typical risk factors include male gender, extreme prematurity, gastro-oesophageal reflux and invasive ventilation, the latter being associated with mucosal damage and blockage of the subglottic cysts' ducts. We describe a case of acquired subglottic cysts in a premature infants presented with respiratory distress. CASE PRESENTATION: A premature male infant was born at 25 weeks + 2 days with a history of monochorionic diamniotic twin pregnancy with twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome. During hospitalizat

Frieden's Group-V Aplasia Cutis Congenita with in utero Scarring in a Dichorionic Twin: A Case Report and Comprehensive Literature Review.

INTRODUCTION: Aplasia cutis congenita (ACC) is a rare congenital disorder characterized by the localized absence of skin at birth, primarily affecting the scalp but also affecting the trunk and limbs. Nine different presentations have been reported. Group V-ACC (G-V ACC) is a rare type associated with fetus papyraceus. The pathogenesis is speculated to involve ischemia from acute hypovolemia or disseminated intravascular coagulation due to thrombotic tissue affecting the surviving twin. Management of ACC depends on lesion severity, focusing on preventing infection and promoting healing, with c

Birth weight and ponderal index percentiles for twins based on sex and chorionicity in a center of Guangdong Province, China.

BACKGROUND: Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) which is judged based on birth weight and gestational age, is associated with increased neonatal mobility and mortality and also has a further impact on physical and mental health during later in life. Using the birth weight percentile for singletons to assess twins might not accurately reflect the growth status of the twins; this could potentially lead to an incorrect evaluation of growth-restricted children. For a more precise assessment of twin newborns, it is beneficial to utilize twin-specific birth weight percentile curves and ponderal i

Genome-wide association study meta-analysis of dizygotic twinning illuminates genetic regulation of female fecundity.

STUDY QUESTION: Which genetic factors regulate female propensity for giving birth to spontaneous dizygotic (DZ) twins? SUMMARY ANSWER: We identified four new loci, GNRH1, FSHR, ZFPM1, and IPO8, in addition to previously identified loci, FSHB and SMAD3. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: The propensity to give birth to DZ twins runs in families. Earlier, we reported that FSHB and SMAD3 as associated with DZ twinning and female fertility measures. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION: We conducted a genome-wide association meta-analysis (GWAMA) of mothers of spontaneous dizygotic (DZ) twins (8265 cases, 264 567

Kidney volume and function of low-birth-weight children at 5 years: impact of singleton and twin birth.

BACKGROUND: Many studies have demonstrated the association between low birth weight (LBW) and chronic kidney disease, estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and kidney volume (KV). However, studies on twins and those investigating numerous perinatal factors beyond LBW, and their associations with various kidney parameters are scarce. METHODS: A two-center cross-sectional study on five-year-old LBW children was conducted between 2021 and 2023. 110 children were enrolled (8 LBW, 58 very LBW (VLBW), 44 extremely LBW (ELBW)); 56 were twins. We examined associations between birth weight (BW),

The usefulness of universal ultrasound before hospital discharge for early diagnosing hip dysplasia in Korean neonates with breech presentation in a single center: A retrospective study.

Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is a broad-spectrum disorder. Early diagnosis and treatment are important for improved prognosis and a lower risk of long-term complications. Selecting high-risk infants is important for the early diagnosis of DDH using ultrasonography; however, there are no standard international guidelines. This study aimed to identify the usefulness of universal ultrasound before hospital discharge in breech-born neonates and proposes selective ultrasound for high-risk patients. A retrospective chart review was conducted to identify breech-born neonates who underwent

Selective Extrauterine Placental Perfusion in Monochorionic Twins Is Feasible-A Case Series.

BACKGROUND: Monochorionic (MC) twins are at risk for severe twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) or twin anemia-polycythemia sequence (TAPS). In the case of preterm delivery, cesarean section (CS) with immediate umbilical cord clamping (ICC) of both twins is usually performed. While the recipient is at risk for polycythemia and may benefit from ICC, this procedure may result in aggravation of anemia with increased morbidity in the anemic donor. The purpose of this study was to demonstrate that the novel approach of selective extrauterine placental perfusion (EPP) with delayed umbilical cor
