Hospital Restrictions Experienced by Women who Give Birth While Incarcerated.

Women who are incarcerated give birth in community hospitals, but under conditions that differ dramatically from women who present from community settings. However, systematic examinations of the full breadth of possible restrictions imposed upon incarcerated women hospitalized for childbirth and recovery are lacking, limiting knowledge on how carceral status affects hospital practices for this population. To bridge this gap, we identified the electronic medical records of 180 women who gave birth in a community-based hospital while in custody of a state prison between June 2014 and July 2022

Comparison of the Effect of Maternal Breast Milk Odor, Facilitated Tucking, and Nonnutritive Sucking Applied to Preterm Neonates During Heel Stick on Pain and Physiological Parameters: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Background: Preterm infants in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) frequently undergo painful procedures, which can lead to both short-term and long-term complications, including potential mortality. Effective pain management is crucial in this context. Although numerous studies have explored non-pharmacological pain relief methods for preterm infants, no research has simultaneously compared the effects of maternal breast milk odor, facilitated tucking, and nonnutritive sucking. Aim: This study aims to comparatively investigate the efficacy of nonnutritive sucking, facilitated tucking, and

Gestational macromastia complicating pregnancy: A case report of unusual bilateral giant breasts in a patient who had no such problem in her previous pregnancies.

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: Gestational macromastia is a rare disorder involving excessive breast tissue enlargement during pregnancy, potentially threatening the fetus and the mother. Our patient's previous pregnancies were more physiological, without any associated symptoms. ABSTRACT: Moderate bilateral enlargement of the breasts is a normal finding during pregnancy and lactation. Occasionally, there is a continuity from this physiological hypertrophy to massive breast hyperplasia or gigantomastia, causing complications that threaten the wellbeing of the fetus and the mother or raising alarm for

The role of dairy food intake for improving health among black Americans across the life continuum: A summary of the evidence.

Decades of health data show major health disparities occurring at every life stage between Black and White Americans. These disparities include greater mortality rates among Black mothers and their offspring, higher levels of malnutrition and obesity among Black children and adolescents, and a higher burden of chronic disease and lower life expectancy for Black adults. Although nutrition is only one of many factors that influence human health and well-being across the life continuum, a growing body of research continues to demonstrate that consuming a healthy dietary pattern is one of the most

Supplementation of Mother's Own Milk with Preterm Donor Human Milk: Impact on Protein Intake and Growth in Very Low Birth Weight Infants-A Randomized Controlled Study.

This randomized study investigates whether feeding very low birth weight (VLBW) infants with mother's own milk (MOM) supplemented with either preterm (PDM) or term donor milk (TDM), when MOM is insufficient, has a positive impact on infants' protein intake and growth. A hundred and twenty VLBW infants were randomized into two groups. Group A (43 infants) received MOM supplemented with PDM, whereas Group B (77 infants) was fed with MOM supplemented with TDM, for the first three weeks of life (donor milk period). Breast milk fortifier was added when milk feeds exceeded 50 mL/Kg/day. After the do

Fish oil supplementation during pregnancy and postpartum in mothers with overweight and obesity to improve body composition and metabolic health during infancy: A double-blind randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Maternal obesity during pregnancy is associated with an increased risk of obesity and metabolic disease in the offspring. Supplementation with fish oil (FO), which is insulin sensitizing, during pregnancy in mothers with overweight or obesity may prevent the development of greater adiposity and metabolic dysfunction in their children. OBJECTIVES: To determine the effects of FO supplementation throughout the second half of pregnancy and lactation in mothers with overweight or obesity on infant body composition and metabolism. METHODS: A double-blind randomized controlled trial of

Dysphoric Milk Ejection Reflex: Report of Two Cases and Postulated Mechanisms and Treatment.

Background: The symptoms of Dysphoric Milk Ejection Reflex (D-MER) occur just before milk release, last no more than a few minutes, and then subside spontaneously, which are characterized by a sudden and transient feeling of dysphoria, depression, sadness, or other negative emotions. These emotions may adversely affect the mother's lactation behavior and mental health, negatively influence the mother-child relationship, and even result in self-harm or suicidal tendencies in lactating women. Case Presentation: We reported two cases of breastfeeding mothers with D-MER who experienced unpleasant

Exclusive breastfeeding at 6 months after assisted and spontaneous conceiving: a prospective study in Northern Italy.

Conceiving by assisted infertility treatments may influence breastfeeding duration. In one-year time, to evaluate the goal of 6 months breastfeeding, we recruited 55 consecutive mothers who conceived using assisted treatment compared to 45 mothers conceiving naturally, all giving birth to healthy, full-term, singleton infants, sharing the double-occupancy room. At birth, maternal/neonatal characteristics were obtained by medical records and interviews. Six months after, a telephonic interview was done about the exclusivity of breastfeeding, mood instability, and breastfeeding complications. Al
