The dose-dependence of 2-amino-1-methyl-6-phenylimidazo-[4,5-b]pyridine (PhIP) carcinogenicity was investigated in F344 rats of both sexes administered the heterocyclic amine in the diet at concentrations of 25 or 100 p.p.m. for up to 104 weeks. This study investigated the role of duodenogastric reflux in rats after antecolic gastrojejunostomy. We studied the efficacy of T2 measurements at high field strength in distinguishing between liver hemangiomas and hepatic metastases when an ultrafast (single-excitation) MR imaging technique is used. This report describes the results of transvaginal color Doppler sonography (TV-CDS) of 43 surgically proved ovarian masses. Waveform analyses of the signals arising from specific vessels (i.e., peripheral, central, septal) adjacent to and within these masses were correlated to those seen on macroscopic pathologic evaluation. The mean and standard deviation of the pulsatility indices (PI) of 32 benign lesions (1.8 +/- 0.8) were higher than 11 malignant ones (0.8 +/- 0.6) (P = 0.03). The diagnostic reliability of currently accepted gross pathologic signs in patients with ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease of the large intestine was evaluated. Of 198 patients who had colectomy or proctocolectomy because of inflammatory bowel disease, 52% had ulcerative colitis and 37% had Crohn's disease, 11% were indeterminable according to histologic evaluation of the surgical specimens. Six of the first 85 patients who received the first 100 liver transplantations carried out in Birmingham developed a syndrome of fulminant liver failure with distinctive clinical and pathological features. The distinction between repair atypia and carcinoma in esophageal brushings is often difficult. To establish criteria for making this distinction, the cytologic smears from 121 consecutive esophageal brushings and the companion biopsies were reviewed. The most reliable criteria for malignancy included sharply angulated nuclear rims, a high nuclear/cytoplasmic ratio, and coarsely granular chromatin. To assess the spectrum of hepatic abnormalities in acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), we reviewed clinical, biochemical, and pathological material in 32 patients with AIDS.
