The results after surgical repair of traumatic anal incontinence in 23 patients, 12 with simple lesions and 11 with complicated lesions, were analyzed. Overlapping suture was the standard technique in simple lesions, whereas additional procedures were necessary in complicated lesions. Fifteen patients (65 percent; 95 percent confidence limits: 43-83) had excellent results and seven (30 percent; 13-53) had acceptable results. In patients with simple lesions, the result was excellent in nine (75 percent; 43-94), and was excellent also in six patients with complicated lesions (55 percent; 23-83).

Using linear-array transrectal prostate sonography, malignant lesions in 43 patients and benign lesions in 74 patients were evaluated. Prostate sonography was sensitive to textural changes produced by both benign and malignant diseases. Oblique projections in celiac and superior mesenteric angiography have been of value in patients with carcinoma arising in various parts of the pancreas. Oblique views allow better perception of the slight and uncertain changes in the pancreatic vessels, which are not discernible on anteroposterior projections because of overlapping with the extrapancreatic vessels and the spine. The measurement of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) in serum and endoscopic brush specimens was evaluated for the differential diagnosis of malignant and nonmalignant gastric disease. A case of Bean's syndrome is reported in which a wide variety of vascular malformations are illustrated. Among these were multiple arterio-venous malformations including a so-called vein of Galen aneurysm. A comparison of this case with those in the literature suggests that the pathology in patients with Bean's syndrome may be more varied than heretofore recognized, and that an overlap between this syndrome and the Osler-Weber-Rendu syndrome may exist.
