Mechanical methods of preventing deep vein thrombosis have been surveyed. The best means of preventing venous stasis has been shown to be by intermittent compression of the legs. Use of intermittent compression will prevent isotopically detectable deep venous thrombosis in 82 percent of patients and in malignancy in 90 percent of patients. The only other prophylactic measure of comparable effectiveness is administration of low-dose subcutaneous heparin. Two patients, who suffered from pericardial tamponade in the course of prophylactic anticoagulant treatment, are reported. The mitral valve had been replaced by a prosthesis in both cases. The diagnosis was suspected clinically and radiologically and proven by pericardiocentesis. One of the patients was treated by a percutaneously inserted small polyethylene tube for continous drainage and the other by thoracotomy and partial pericardiectomy. Both patients recovered and are at present asymptomatic. Th mechanism of bleeding patients receiving anticoagulant therapy is briefly discussed.

Infiltrating ductal carcinoma of the breast occurred in a total of six men from two families. In one family specimens from three men who had prophylactic mastectomies revealed focal intraductal hyperplasia, suggesting a familial tendency toward proliferation of mammary-duct epithelium. In the other family, benign and malignant breast lesions also developed in several women. Preliminary data suggest elevated urinary oestrogen excretion in three men from these families, implicating a defect in oestrogen production or metabolism in the pathogenesis of male breast neoplasms.

Based on an analysis of 68 intestinal resections in children, it is considered that functional deviations in the digestive tract activity and other systems and organs, observed in the immediate postoperative period and in later terms, necessitate the utilization of parenteral feeding. Therefore, children subjected to the bowel resection should be kept under a dispensary control and checked regularly to conduct prophylactic and therapeutic measures.

135 patients with senile retinoschisis were treated by argon laser coagulation. 73 of them were reexamined after an average interval of 15 months. The treatment consisted of a posterior demarcation by 2-3 lasercoagulation series in the area of the normal retina and in addition treatment of the entire area of retinoschisis. Lasercoagulation was performed, when: 1. the retinoschisis reached the equator or extended postequatorially, 2. a hole in the outer layer was detected, 3. a retinal detachment proceeded from a retinoschisis in the other eye.

In 104 malignant melanoma patients who underwent lymphadenectomy (67 females, 37 males), correlations were studied between histologically diagnosed lymph node metastasis, the type of malignant melanoma and the depth of invasion according to Clark, as well as other parameters. The question whether a hepatitis B virus infection can become chronic as a result of prophylactic or therapeutic measures is investigated. Experience with standard or hepatitis B gamma-globulin has shown no negative influence on the development of chronic hepatitis B virus infections. On the other hand it cannot be excluded that a hepatitis B virus infection may be so modified by steroid therapy, by immunosuppressive or cytostatic treatment that the disease runs a milder course and then tends to chronicity with persistence of HBs antigen.
