This critical review is based upon controlled experimental and clinical data. Dendritic keratitis initially should be treated by debridement of the diseased epithelium followed by antiviral medication. Complete and unselected data concerning the postoperative pathology of congenital heart disease are presented for the first time. This study was based on 2,365 autopsies performed at the Children's Hospital Medical Center, Boston, in the 9 years from 1966 through 1974. An investigation was carried out of 821 children under the age of 16 years who were subjected to splenectomy in England and Wales during the 5 years 1960-4. A postal follow-up study provided satisfactory information concerning 96 per cent of these. The occurrence of postoperative deep vein thrombosis (DVT) was studied in 209 elective surgery patients aged 40 years or over. Most of the operations were cholecystectomies or other major abdominal operations. In the detection of thrombosis the 125I-fibrinogen method was used. A review of 231 cases of colonic operations performed during the year 1971 by, or under the supervision of, 32 attending surgeons in an 850 bed private community medical center was undertaken. The frequency of postoperative venous thrombosis and the prophylactic effect of dextran 40 and 70 were studied in 90 otherwise healthy patients undergoing cholecystectomy. The 125-I-fibrinogen test was employed as the diagnostic method. The frequency of thrombosis was very low (1.1%) compared with other investigations on patients undergoing elective general surgery. Thus nothing can be concluded about the prophylactic effect of dextran from this series, but it can be presumed that this type of patient does not need routine prophylaxis against deep venous thrombosis.

A series of 202 patients with stage I and II carcinoma of the cervix uteri is presented. Radical hysterectomy and pelvic lymph node dissection was performed in all cases and most patients received radiotherapy in addition. An investigation of the prevalence of hereditary adenomatosis of the colon and rectum (ACR) in Sweden was started in 1959. Up to the end of 1972, 97 families were traced and 80 of them were more fully investigated. In 56 of the latter families there were at least 2 affected members; in the other 24, only one. In all, 340 affected individuals were found, 150 of whom were operated upon with the aim of cure.
