We present the third case of phaeohyphomycosis caused by Veronaea botryosa in China and the tenth case worldwide. A 16-year-old Chinese girl developed crusted, verrucous lesions, initially on the left ear and later on the left buttock, within 2-5 months of receiving an ear piercing. OBJECTIVE: To study the role of mitomycin C in reducing keloid recurrence.
STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, randomised, controlled trial.
SETTING: Tertiary care referral centre.
PATIENTS: Case series of 20 patients presenting with 26 pinna swellings, mostly following ear piercing.
INTERVENTIONS: We used the technique of surgical shave excision combined with topical application of mitomycin C and secondary wound healing, in all 26 pinnae.
RESULTS: Patients were followed up six to 24 months post-operatively. No recurrences were noted during this period.

BACKGROUND: Keloid is not a homogeneous biological entity. The exact pathologic mechanism of the lesion continues to be an enigma for physicians and researchers alike and no specific gene or sets of genes have been identified. The art of body piercing is ancient to people in the developed countries but over years it has rejuvenated to part of their fashion process. Ear-piercing or extra ear-piercing is becoming more rampant among youths in this part of the world, this however have been shown to cause hypertrophic scaring, keloids and its attendant cosmetic problems.

Although metals are common contact allergens, clinical findings of metal contact dermatitis have varied. Body art as expressed through non-therapeutic bodily modification is extremely popular, with techniques ranging from the commonplace such as ear piercing to the more esoteric forms such as tongue splitting. Scarification is one such body art practice that is becoming popular as an alternative to tattooing and ear piercing. This paper begins by outlining the regulatory problems that scarification poses. It then goes on to argue that although there is a reasonable case for permitting competent adults to make use of scarification, the practice should not be made available to minors.

Body piercing is a growing trend, especially in young people, but the literature on complications of piercing consists mostly of case reports involving ear piercing. Previous reported complications of piercing include contact dermatitis, keloids, traumatic tearing, viral transmission, and bacterial infections. We report two patients who presented with atypical mycobacterial infections of body piercing sites. It is important to recognize the association of piercing and mycobacterial infections so that tissue can be obtained for histopathologic examination and appropriate culture.

A case of sarcoidal-type allergic contact granuloma due to palladium is presented. The patient developed papulonodular lesions at the right earlobe after ear piercing, which after 3 to 4 years became more granulomatous and very resistant to treatment.
